Joseph Tholl is widely known as a Swedish multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. He gained international recognition as a founding member and guitarist of the speed metal band Enforcer, which he officially left in 2019. After his time with Enforcer, he formed Black Trip (later renamed Vojd) and is currently playing guitar in Tribulation. Following 2019's Devil's Drum, It Might Be Art is his second solo album. It was recorded and mixed at Humbucker Studio, which Tholl co-owns with Robert Pehrsson (also a High Roller Records artist). Tholl handles vocals, guitars, and most of the bass, as well as piano and synthesizer parts. Drum duties are shared by Robert Eriksson (The Hellacopters) and Jakob Ljungberg (Second Sun). In addition, the album features several guest appearances by musicians including Johannes Andersson (Tribulation), Tobias Lindkvist (Tyrann), Pia Stjärnvind (Serpent Omega), Adam Zaars (Tribulation), and Robert Pehrsson (Dundertåget, Robert Pehrsson's Humbucker). Life changes can bring about chaos and seismic shifts, but if Stalagmite Angels is any indication, then it’s all for the better. In the wake of the release of Judiciary’s second LP Flesh + Blood, the band called upon Juan Vazquez to pick up guitar duties, thereby changing the internal framework of the band for good, and unknowingly for the better. It’s this pivot in personnel that resulted in the band’s latest EP. “The goal with this EP was a hard reset, but we also wanted to chill the f— out a bit, have fun, and do something that felt true to the four of us,” recalls drummer Austin Looney. “We wanted time to reconfigure things and let the music come naturally–temper this new mindset that we've adopted post-Flesh + Blood.”
Judiciary’s greatest strength lies in their musical singularity. Though Stalagmite Angels represents the collision of influences from across well-worn territories like metallic hardcore, death metal, black metal, d-beat and more, it’s the Lubbock-born band’s approach that makes it distinctly their own. Stalagmite Angels is a wholly new document that resembles a horde of bands ranging from Hatebreed to Carcass to Slayer to Iron Age, yet never aping any single band nor even revealing any single influence. It’s all familiar but none of it is specific. “90s hardcore and hardcore in general is always gonna be our natural inclination, but it manifests with different elements not only from song to song but within each song,” says vocalist Jake Collinson emphatically, who learned guitar specifically to help with writing new material. “Whether that’s Dying Breed or Cannibal Corpse or Crowbar or Machine Head or any number of other influences that any one of us may have, it all manifests in our work, and through our individual and collective lenses. With this EP, we transformed those ideas into the Judiciary approach.”
Stalagmite Angels is an EP about anger at the world, belief in yourself, and how harnessing both in the pursuit of growth is necessary to achieve. But furthermore, it’s a concept record that envisions a subterranean world in both a literal and metaphorical sense—where hidden beauty lurks in the shadows (and in the eye of the beholder) and where triumph manifests in the ability to rise from the depths and into the world above. The concept, according to Collinson, comes from inspiration in films like The Descent, but also from harsh noise and even the music of artists from across the band’s spectrum of influences, like Hank Williams and Peso Pluma.
Engineered and produced by Phil Odom at Bad Wolf Recording Studios in Austin and mixed and mastered by Will Putney, Stalagmite Angels was written across the several locations that Judiciary calls home and then synthesized live as a group prior to production.

Several tracks revisit earlier material with fresh perspectives. “Wänderer” and “Drömsång” are partially rerecorded or fully reimagined. A quarter century of Kludde! To mark this anniversary, "Langs Scheld- en Denderland" will be re-released as co-release between Consouling Sounds and Thenra Collectivum. For the first time professionally available as 6-panel CDdigisleeve and on black viny. The album has been completely remixed and remastered by Cerulean. While sounding a lot better, the original feel and atmosphere have been preserved. The artwork also received a nice upgrade. The demo was released initially released on CD-R in 2002 and was well received in the local underground and beyond. It got under the attention of Nightmare Productions, the label of Nocturnus Horrendus from Corpus Christi, who re-released the demo one year later in 2003 on tape. Those original versions today have become a much wanted collector's item in the underground black metal scene. Kludde was formed somewhere in 2001 by Snoodaert and Uglúk as a black-metal studio project inspired by the second wave of Black Metal. Local folklore was chosen as a concept and the band name was named after an evil tormentor who hid at night along the waterfront to scare the shit out of unsuspecting passengers. The Kludde, Kleddemèvel or Waterklerre is also a shapeshifter who, often in the form of a large black dog, walked on his hind legs, with glowing crimson eyes and wrapped in rattling chains. As Knocked Loose chipped away at what would become their third album, they felt the pressure from all sides. Internally, there was the need to challenge themselves as songwriters while retaining the merciless intensity and unflinching honesty that have always been their calling cards. Externally, there was a whole new set of eyes on the hard-touring Louisville quintet, following a banner year in which they’d brought their underground-seasoned sound to some of the world’s biggest stages, finding themselves the unlikely viral darlings of both Coachella and Bonnaroo.
The creative process was arduous, with the band writing close to 40 songs across a span of four years before locking in the 10 tracks that make up new LP You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To. But in the end, vocalist Bryan Garris, guitarists Isaac Hale and Nicko Calderon, bassist Kevin Otten and drummer Kevin “Pac Sun” Kaine honed a diverse, cohesive and savagely intense album that both sums up the massive strides they’ve taken during their decade as a band, and asserts their boundless potential going forward.
Raging lead single “Blinding Faith” skillfully wields whiplash tempo changes in service of a scathing indictment of religious groupthink. “Don’t Reach for Me” combines the band’s signature frenzied attack with deliberate catchiness and refreshing sonic variety. While “Suffocate,” featuring pop-meets-metal trailblazer Poppy, contrasts an oppressive heaviness befitting the title with a dance-y, syncopated groove and, midway through, the most concussive reggaeton rhythm you’ve ever heard.
The album title — a phrase that a fellow passenger said to Garris to soothe his severe air-travel anxiety during a particularly trying flight — strikes a note of reassurance. But glossing over negative emotions isn’t what Knocked Loose are about. The new songs find them plumbing new depths of loathing — directed both inward and outward — and tortuous anguish. Musically, they’re leaning into their most extreme impulses, from blastbeat-driven fury, chaotic turbulence and seismic breakdowns, while seasoning the mix with ear-catching auxiliary percussion, evocative samples and shout-along hooks, all interwoven to perfection by Grammy-nominated, pop-savy producer Drew “WZRD BLD” Fulk.
There’s no ceiling for hardcore in 2024 — even an outfit as uncompromising as Knocked Loose can turn up in mainstream-adjacent spaces and win over new fans. But there’s a center to what they do that will never change: uncompromising heaviness, both sonically and thematically. What is evolving is their drive to find new ways to convey that heaviness, and add tasteful variety that only highlights their undiminished ferocity. Everywhere Knocked Loose have been is here on this record — but so is everywhere they may yet go.
