During the pandemic I put together a short set of Music for the IBMA with Phoebe Hunt and Mimi Naja highlighting songs by women. This was an informal example of something I’ve been dreaming of turning into a full length LP.In March 2025 I saw my vision turn into a reality. I co-produced a record with Shani Gandhi of songs that have made their way into the bluegrass canon, and were written by women. Some of these songs I sang for many years before realizing they were penned by a wife/mother/female artist. As a woman, it’s easy to feel like an outsider, or like you don’t belong, in a genre where there is a noticeable lack of representation of women among the forebears. To know that women’s voices made it into the traditional songs feels like a quiet win, and I want to draw more attention to it. Just like having pickers like Molly Tuttle and Sierra Hull out there showing little girls that there is a place for them now in bluegrass, *I want to show where there always has been.* That women’s words and voices made it in there even in the early days. I also feel primed to do this now as a follow up to Queen of Time, which honored my own maternal lineage, namely the spirit my grandmother left with me.

I’d call it an indie folk record, deeply inspired by Gillian Welch, Fiona Apple, Damien Rice, Big Thief, and more outright country artists like The Chicks and Tyler Childers. Who is Fawn’s Enemy? Oftentimes, Fawn’s Enemy is Fawn herself. She can be tender, she can be spiteful, she can be self-destructive, she can be strong-willed and self-assured. I’m burdened with both an honesty compulsion and a penchant for melodrama. I made an agreement with myself before I wrote this record that every word on it would come solely from me, so Fawn’s Enemy feels, to me, both uncompromised and unfiltered.
“Fawn’s Rage” is the crux of this entire record, the foundation that it was built around. Once I recognized the ways the Fawn Response appeared for me in my day-to-day life, my creative world started to light up. Writing, recording, and producing this record was empowering and terrifying at the same time, so putting it out feels like the ultimate emotional release. My biggest hope that it provides some healing for listeners and I hope people receive it as an invitation to become closer with themselves.

Chicago singer-songwriter Max Subar laid down the bones of Anything Could Be, his debut album, in a house on the shore of a frozen lake in Wisconsin. Subar returnedto the sonic and spiritual landscape he'd cultivated during the initial ten day session, remaining present in that moment by working when he could truly occupyit's heart. Most of the additional sessions that add texture and color to the album were recorded in Subar's home studio, in the same house where Case Oats, the CaseyGomez-Walker-led outfit in which Subar plays guitar, recorded their 2025 debut Last Missouri Exit. His brother, Sam Subar, played drums. Further instrumentation was provided by Case Oats bandmates Spencer Tweedy (drums on "I Never" and "Way Up"), Jason Ashworth (upright bass), and Scott Daniel (violin), as well as frequent collaborators Chet Zenor (electric guitar), Kelly Hannemann (piano), and Sarah Weddle (vibraphone, organ, and electric piano).The arrangements that took shape are generous and illuminative, giving flesh to the bones of Anything Could Be's live guitar and vocal takes without sacrificing theirspontaneity. "Performing no more than a few takes of these parts was crucial to keep the songs from ever feeling laborious, tired, or overworked," says Subar. "If Icouldn't get it in about three takes, something wasn't right. Maybe the part was too busy. Maybe it was my approach. Whatever it meant, I took it as a sign to move on.The result of this process is a mesmerizing, open-hearted debut that grows with the listener, rewarding time and close attention. Title track and lead single "Anything Could Be" is an invitation to meet Subar on this wavelength, his voice invoking the memory of a dream while his guitar gently pulls him through it's logic, arriving at the desire for freedom, openness, and growth that animates the record. On "Like You've Known It," the arrangement recedes into the sound of windchimes and waves breaking on the shore, an organic pulse that bears the song out into the water. His use of pedal steel on songs like "See Saw" allows him to stretch time, following it'sundulation to a stunning moment of witness where what's stirred to life is nothing less than a once-stagnant spirit, a long-simmering breakthrough that comes tofruition, at last, on "As The Weather," where his voice rises to meet that breakthrough with grace and gratitude for what he has weathered.Anything Could Be offers the listener both the transformative space in which the album was shaped, and a portrait of the artist, and person that artist became in making it. It's 11 songs are imbued with what the poet Adrienne Rich called "a wild patience," aradical stillness that is, itself, a journey towards consciousness, peace, andself-awareness. It makes no promises about what's next. Just the same, it leaves you in breathless anticipation for what that may be, so long as it stirs Subar to pick up his guitar and play through it as he did this chapter of his life.

Recorded in Nashville with producer Jay Joyce (Orville Peck, Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson), the fifth full album from the singer, songwriter, and virtuoso guitarist marks a sonic departure from her recent work and features twelve new songs—eleven originals and one cover, of Icona Pop and Charli xcx’s “I Love It.” The album campaign kicks off with the first single, “That’s Gonna Leave a Mark,” which she co-wrote with Kevin Griffin (Better Than Ezra).On her new album—a hybrid of pop, country, rock, and flat-picking, plus one murder ballad—Tuttle goes to a whole new place. Her virtuoso guitar work takes center stage on this album more than ever, and for the first time, she introduces her banjo playing into two of her recordings.“I like to be a bit of a chameleon with my music. Keep people guessing and keep it full of surprises,” she says.So Long Little Miss Sunshine was recorded with drummer/percussionists Jay Bellerose and Fred Eltringham, bassist Byron House, and Joyce on multiple instruments. Some of the richest music is also the hardest to categorise. With their fifth full-length "Acou", Moon Far Away embark on a musical exploration of the magical nature of sound. The band from the sub-arctic city of Arkhangelsk in Russia's north is studying the mythological cycle of the universe by assigning certain sounds and musical styles that range from the archaic and folklore to liturgical, classical, and even experimental music to each stage of it's existence. Moon Far Away were inspired by the finding that the world begins and ends in many ancient legends with a sound - from the utterance of a word to actual music or even the big bang of science. On "Acou", which means 'listen!' in Greek, the word (lógos) and music (mousike) are as fundamental to the fabric of the universe as the classical elements of earth, fire, water, and air. Moon Far Away have occasionally been referred to as "the heart of Russian gothic folk" or "The Russian Dead Can Dance", which are notions that still ring true regarding "Acou". Their music appears to be both light and even dreamy on the surface, yet at the same time it comes with a dignity, gravitas and passionate seriousness that set these songs apart from simple pop; despite sounding captivating and melodic. With "Acou", Moon Far Away present their richest and most complete album so far that will find old and new friends from a wide range of stylistic preferences that certainly include fans of DEAD CAN DANCE, ALCEST, WARDRUNA, and many others - although the unique band from Russia's North does sound different from all of those mentioned above. Nora Brown, at 16 years of age, plays with beauty and depth in the performances captured on her new album, Sidetrack My Engine. Recorded in mono, live to tape in a large 19th century vaulted stone cellar, below the streets of Brooklyn, the album combines the raw and immediate quality of a field recording with the recording quality of a studio album. The album is now available on 12" LP.The songs, and instrumentals on this record draw the listener in: They are poignant and transformative, challenging listeners to allow this old and "outsider" music into their present day life, alongside the music on the radio, TV and front pages of the internet. Nora is joined on several songs by Jackson Lynch and Jerron "Blindboy" Paxton, hailed by the New York Times as "easily the most talented young acoustic bluesman to come along in many, many years."These songs were learned by Nora through the continued tradition of visiting elder musicians in her community, from old records and from field recordings in archival collections.The record opens with 8th of January, a tune commemorating the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. Nora learned this tune from an archival recording of the great African American banjo and fiddle duet, Frazier and Patterson. The essential American ballad Frankie and Albert was learned in person from the contemporary Eastern Kentucky banjo player, John Haywood. The Very Day I'm Gone was adapted by Nora from a version sung by the ballad singer Addie Graham. Wedding Dress came to Nora from John Cohen and is heard here in her own arrangement and version.

The latest creation from Colombia's effervescent scene of rich hybridizations, Nuevos RÃos offers us a breathtaking dive into the Afro-descendant traditions of the Colombian Pacific, enhanced by the input of electronic and amplified music. The result is stunning. Never losing it's course, this odyssey transcends boundaries and carries us along the discovery of a new river with countless meanders. Here we feel the heat of the tropics, the embodied power of musical traditions, and the sweat of European dancefloors in a unique cocktail-quickly addictive, sometimes introspective, and irresistibly danceable. Born from the encounter between Canalón de TimbiquÃ-the Colombian group founded by maestra Nidia Góngora, whose mesmerizing, instantly recognizable voice has graced projects such as Quantic, Ondatrópica, and The Bongo Hop-and the Toulouse-based trio Reco Reco, passionate explorers of trance-inducing music, especially from South America, the Nuevos RÃos project traces it's origins back to the banks of the Timbiquà River. Far from the beaten path, at the heart of Colombia's Pacific region, the two groups came together naturally in the village of TimbiquÃ, the very roots of Canalón's music and of Nidia Góngora herself. Through a series of improvised jam sessions in the ground floor of Nidia's home, the hybridization of their music became an obvious path-born from a shared desire to reveal to attentive listeners the strength of this human and musical encounter. This first chapter, released on ZZK Records-a label renowned for uncovering South American gems (Son Rompe Pera, Nicola Cruz, La Yegros...)-is carried by the singular writing and timbre of Nidia Góngora. Across the tracks, each element of the ensemble finds it's rightful place: the power of Colombian Pacific percussion and the poetry of the marimba de chonta catch us around a savory guitar riff never far from West Africa; the strength of the voices is heightened by layers of electronic textures; while drums interlock with bass keys to provide a double engine for the eponymous vessel, Nuevos RÃos. The lyrics tell of a daily life always close to nature, around a river that is both a central artery and a channel of exchange-without shying away from the harsh realities of a region scarred by Colombia's internal conflicts. And perhaps this music is already a first response to some of those wounds, in the form of a ritual of collective celebration.
