Pulitzer and Grammy-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens has announced that her new album Hope is the Thing with Feathers will be released September 18 on Nonesuch Records. The 10-song collection was inspired by the beauty of people coming together and drawing strength from each other. It was intentionally recorded live with no frills and few overdubs, just pure and essential music that captures the feeling of community, clarity, as well as the joy and power of creating together. From exploring the lineages that make American music to the community-oriented spirit in which it was conceived and recorded, in many ways the album tells the story of the last 20 years of Giddens’ life.
Hope is the Thing with Feathers features Giddens’ key collaborators from throughout her career. Giddens (lead vocals, minstrel banjo, fiddle) is joined by longtime bassist Jason Sypher, Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi (accordion, percussion), Congolese artist Niwel Tsumbu (guitars), and Louisiana native Dirk Powell on multiple instruments, as well as her very first bandmate and fellow North Carolinian Justin Robinson (vocals, fiddle), her nephew Justin Harrington (bones), Dirk’s daughter Amelia Powell (acoustic guitar, vocals), Charly Lowry (vocals, percussion), and Giddens’ sister Lalenja Harrington.
Says Giddens: “Louisiana, the Congo, Italy, the Carolinas - all of these influences and people coming together to make something: that is American music. It’s how American music came to be, and that was the original thought of creating a band with the musicians that I’ve been playing with for years, and featured on this album.”
On “Carolina Rain” Giddens soars over plucked banjo and fiddle runs in a song about love and money that pierces like an arrow.
Giddens has a full slate of performances throughout the summer, including a special five-night presentation of concerts in which Giddens will be joined by Mavis Staples, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Hurray for the Riff Raff under open skies for a joyful celebration of American songs that connect generations.

Real humansmaking real noise in real time.The record opens with "If It Bleeds It Leads" - my kinda classic mischief. Then comes"Petrichor," inspired by the beautiful smell after it rains. (I later discovered Phish has onetoo, but mine's the barefoot cousin at brunch.) "At It Again" follows, a cosmic co-writewith my brother-from-another-meerkat Jim Lauderdale, featuring Bryan Owings and ChrisDonohue (Emmylou Harris's rhythm section). I will probably get crucified for thissong, but hopefully it will be an AI video made by an angry man living in his mom's basement.Side two kicks off with "Love a Little Bigger," a rowdy co-write with Vince Herman of LeftoverSalmon. "Fixin' Up" (track seven) is my secret favorite - like a quarter from the Tooth Fairyyou gotta dig around for. "New Tattoo" follows about a dude who got his lover's face inkedon his own face. (Bad plan, good song.) "Brand New Liver" imagines swapping out your oldone like a water pump instead of quitting drinking. And then comes the closer "Hairlift." Thatone has my favorite line I've ever written: "I used to play ping pong with my old friend MaoZedong. I thought he told me I was well hung, but he was speaking in the mother tongue."That's JoyRide. These songs find Dollbaum searching for acceptance in the transient in-between places: Florida's pine flatwoods, backroads leading to 1-95, where birds fly across the water. And even though the ghosts of his alt-county predecessors Townes and Molina are definitely present, on Birds of Paradise, Dollbaum emerges from their shadows-waving to the past, sounding all the more like himself.This moment-this album-is long overdue. Both of Dollbaum's previous releases had taken way too long to record, due to circumstances out of his control, leaving him frustrated. And after having been away from his home for eight years, the place he had left was no longer the place he remembered, and the unchanging of the natural world felt like a constant he wanted to write about. With a sense of immediacy, he wrote Birds of Paradise in three months. Called up the musicians he trusted and admired the most-Nick Corson, Josh Halper, and Jake Lenderman- and asked them to meet him at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, Mississippi with producer/engineer Clay Jones. A marvel of interwoven musicianship and testament to the duo's singular camaraderie, the album encapsulates the two veteran guitarist-songwriters' mutual admiration and effortless compatibility as they swap and share nine new songs of dazzling dexterity and grace recorded almost entirely on acoustic guitars. Though their initial objective had been all instrumental, the natural flow of the sessions led the duo to begin incorporating vocal tracks. Stark yet intricately arranged songs such as the cinematic tracks "Nevermind" and "Flying Things" (featuring additional vocals from GRAMMYr Award-nominated singing siblings The Secret Sisters), and an incandescent version of Neil Young's "Sail Away" are rich with dazzling dexterity and grace, Ramsey's nimble fingerstyle picking and Broemel's classically trained virtuosity aligning to create a predominantly instrumental song cycle of rustic beauty and atmospheric power. Vaiano's Paisanos was started by Rachel Meirs (violin, mandolin), Maxwell Poulos (mandolin, tenor banjo, tenor guitar) and Van Burchfield (guitar). This album represents three virtuoso musicians, performing a unique mix of rare international and American musical traditions from rare 78s.
