Rich and full of character like the dusty mystery of an archeological site, Kural whispers to the living and the long gone alike in the poetic embrace of Motorcycles and Cherry Wind.Of Turkish origin, composer and songwriter Isik Kural cut his teeth strumming nylon guitar strings in his adolescence, accompanied by playful lyrics composed solely of stumbled upon phrases and conversations. What began as a casual curiosity laid the foundations of his adult manifestations, inspiring him to pursue academic studies at the University of Miami for a life built around music. Inquisitive by nature, he grew into a frequent passenger, following rhythms and old wives' tales from Helsinki, to Glasgow (where he now resides), to historic landscapes. These escapades, particularly his wanderings through antique, golden hued old worlds, shape the emotional undercurrent of Motorcycles and Cherry Wind.Motorcycles and Cherry Wind's title, and it's animating spirit, trace back to a trip to Marrakech in 2022. As Kural observed the hustle and bustle of the town center, he was less keen on factual documentation than on the fleeting feelings entangled in sound. Upon first listen, warm memories of cities long visited come flooding back into the mind-not with a single image, but with the entire sensory experience-the mineral smell of packed earth, the texture on the walls of the village, the way the light softly radiates from the cherry red fruit huddled under the heat at a roadside stall on a balmy October afternoon. Time spent traveling often leaves memories that can't necessarily be mapped in the moment; however, with distance, they tend to reveal new patterns. On Motorcycles and Cherry Wind, Kural has collected these interior tracings like cherished trinkets-a field recording from a 'dolmus' in Istanbul, the afterglow of swimming in ancient Lycia, birdsongs from Bridge of Allan-building an inexhaustible archive to which he returns as a seasoned collector. He sorts through them unhurriedly, listening with renewed attention, uncovering perspectives that may have previously escaped him, before weaving their precious threads into texturally neat, atmospheric arrangements. Piano keys, guitar riffs, woodwind, and even traditionally scored sheet music all find their way into the layers, giving the album a spiritual, almost transcendental resonance. Every song on Motorcycles and Cherry Wind is an ode to the ancestral music makers-their borrowed melodies passing through enough hands to arrive at new meanings and new purpose each time. Jadu Heart's 'Wanderflower' and 'Ezra's Garden' reissued together on vinyl for the first time.Since their 2016 debut EP 'Wanderflower', Jadu Heart has been slowly building a catalog of electro-pop, R&B, and psychedelic bops. The UK-based duo, consisting of Alex Headford and Diva Jeffery, now has roughly 30 songs that are a collective myriad of immersive soundscapes. Jadu Heart's 'Wanderflower' was a project released as part of a school project at The British and Irish Modern Music Institute in 2016. Diva described the project as a 'story of two characters - Dina and Faro - who get cursed in a temple [and] every song [in 'Wanderflower'] corresponds to a different chapter in their story.' Their tutor sent the EP to Mura Masa who immediately took a liking to the duo and made them an opening act for his album release show. They were subsequently signed to his label and given the same manager.The couple's sophomore EP, 'Ezra's Garden', is a continuation of Jadu Heart's now-signature DIY, psych-funk sound inspired by Jai Paul. The tracks are accompanied by a visual component on YouTube, as Spotify hadn't quite explored the necessity of visualizers yet. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Koen Holtkamp has spent more than two decades shaping a body of work at the intersection of ambient, experimental, and electroacoustic music. Known for his role in the influential duo Mountains, as well as a solo catalog defined by texture and spatial awareness, Holtkamp has long explored how sound interacts with environment and perception. With Nightlife, he enters a new phase of that inquiry, one shaped as much by physical relocation as artistic evolution.After leaving Brooklyn for the relatively rural setting of New York's Hudson Valley, Holtkamp found himself immersed in nature and embracing a slower way of life, a shift that directly informed the album's creation. Rather than rushing into a new project, he allowed the space itself to guide him, focusing on experimentation and play instead of a fixed outcome. Over time, a new instrument emerged from his modular system, built around physical modeling techniques that emulate plucked string sounds. Drawing on a deep affinity for acoustic traditions, from guitar soli to the kora and other chordophones, he began translating those influences into an electronic language, creating music that feels tangible, effusive, and even intimate, despite it's synthetic nature.As the pieces took shape, Holtkamp expanded the project into a kind of imagined ensemble. Composed with specific collaborators in mind, the album features extensive contributions from drummer Greg Fox and saxophonist and flutist Matt Bauder, whose performances subtly reshape the material and draw it toward more fluid, song-like forms, alongside a guest appearance from Ben Vida on synth bass. Yet even as Nightlife occasionally resembles a band in motion, it's construction resists traditional cohesion. Acoustic and electronic sources coexist to create a hyper-dimensional sense of space, with each element deliberately placed in it's own distinct environment, yielding a complex yet inviting setting that feels both otherworldly and completely natural. Much of the album was created during late-night sessions, which became a kind of personal ritual and ultimately inspired it's title. Nightlife unfolds as a series of finely detailed environments, where stillness, texture, and subtle interplay take precedence over momentum. Each piece invites close listening while remaining open and unforced, reflecting both a change in pace and a deepening of focus. The result extends Holtkamp's ongoing interest in how sound can shape, and be shaped by, the spaces we inhabit. XKatedral is proud to present a new full-length album by label co-founder Maria W Horn. Melting Pillars of Snow is a collection of new compositions from the renowned Swedish composer written for Contrabass Recorder, Sho, Percussion, Electric Guitar, Voice and Electronics performed by Horn together with a chamber ensemble consisting of Anna Petrini, Mattias HÃ¥llsten, Magdalena Meitzner and Mats Erlandsson. The album also features narration by Horn as well as a guest appearance by Michael Gira on the first single Scythe of Saturn. Melting Pillars of Snow sees Maria drawing inspiration from W.G. Sebald's novel The Rings of Saturn which is a poetic reflection following an unnamed narrator wandering along the Suffolk coast in England. As the landscape gradually shifts the text touches in various ways on the passage of time and the distance between past, present, and future, reflecting both vast temporal scales, such as the cycles of the seasons, deep historical time and microscopic moments and fragments. With the compositions contained in this release Maria evokes a similar sense of stillness - an environment in which the movement of time itself can be illuminated and observed. The instrumentarium found on this album is Horn's most ambitious to date and sees her adding a complex array of percussion instruments, wind instruments operating at each extreme of the musical range and electric guitar paired with her regular palette of customized algorithmic synthesis and electronic processing to weave a spiraling spectral tapestry through the audio range. Percussionist Magdalena Meizner performs specialized techniques on the overtone triangle, dubachi, timpani and tam-tam, as well as pitched wine glasses and bowed crotales. The low end contrabass recorder played by Anna Petrini and the high frequency Sho performed by Mattias HÃ¥llsten add contrasting chordal arrangements set in strict metric structures. The ensemble is completed by Mats Erlandsson performing on electric and acoustic guitars moving from gentle arpeggiated figures to doom-laden drones and feedback howls.
