Trio Barclay present Beyond The Pacific, an album of contemporary works for piano trio that sits at the intersection of chamber music excellence and a 21st-century American musical experience. The album opens with a cathartic journey: the Piano Trio No. 1 of Sheridan Seyfried. Energetic and heartfelt in equal measure, the range of tones and color on display throughout the album is immediately apparent. Elsewhere, "Orcas Island: The Rose of the San Juan Islands" by John Wineglass heightens the imagery, depicting a stunning portrait of the seascapes of the Pacific Northwest. Further down the Western coastline, Michael Fine's "California" delights in the fascinating multiculturalism of the Golden State, the third of three works showcased fittingly by three of California's foremost chamber musicians. Trio Barclay present these thought-provoking works with their usual flair and vigour. Having fostered a reputation as an ensemble of big musical personalities who create dynamic and exciting musical experiences across North America and beyond, this album is a moving and nostalgic return home, underscored by three gems of contemporary music.

Mark Kaplan has long been recognised as one of the world's leading violinists. His career spans decades and a discography of more than forty-five recordings. Here, for the first time on record, he is joined in Brahms's three violin sonatas by his son, pianist David Kaplan, himself an artist of growing international presence and critical acclaim. Brahms's three violin sonatas provide a natural meeting point for this unique collaboration between father and son, shaped by the close and equal dialogue between violin and piano. Together, they trace a path from the inward lyricism of the G major Sonata, Op. 78, through the warmth of the A major, Op. 100, to the darker, more dramatic world of the D minor Sonata, Op. 108, whose finale ranks among Brahms's most powerful chamber works.

At first sight Beethoven's Violin Sonatas appear to occupy only a subordinate role when placed alongside his great symphonic works and the piano sonatas. While the earlier works in the genre were viewed in their time with scepticism due to the "rare difficulty" and "learnedness" of their piano part, the later sonatas however display an increasingly marked independence of the violin part. For this reason, the A major Violin Sonata (which was dedicated to the French violinist Rodolph Kreutzer), and the so-called Spring Sonata (whose nickname was added by an unknown hand) soon became two of the most famous representatives of their genre.David Oistrakh, the brilliant violinist in this Philips re-release, certainly needs no further introduction. All the more attention, therefore, should be given to the great achievement of the less well-known pianist, Lev Oborin, a frequent chamber-music partner of Oistrakh's. Every possible facet of the instrumental dialogue is captured in Oborin's performance. He is restrained in passages where the melody is given over to the violin; he and his partner toss the motifs back and forth between them; and he takes the reins firmly into his hands when the music demands it. All this takes place with the precision of a Swiss clock but by no means with mere mechanical virtuosity.."." Way in front of composers of the Viennese Classical era, which he did not take particularly seriously - although his performances keenly reflect Beethoven's rhythmicity - comes his personal deity: Bach. Gould's notorious strictness gives form to the minutest of figure in the score. He weaves his way through Bach's music and thereby articulates it's tightly knit and multi-facetted depths. No lecturing keyboard proponent this, but a creative co-composer who imbues the spirit of the music with life and sonority.

The outstanding success of our release of Bach's Cello Suites performed by Janos Starker has encouraged us to follow this up with a no less important interpretation of Dvor k's Cello Concerto by the Hungarian virtuoso. Starker tackles this concerto with amazing confidence; technical difficulties encountered by others in it's performance appear unknown to him. Tonal purity, even in the dreaded upper register and the cadenzas, remains unscathed, so that one can concentrate wholly on the meditative magic of the music.Janos Starker has found worthy fellow musicians in Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra. The conductor and soloist set a benchmark in how to work together as a team in concert in that it is less the often lamented emulation than the interpretation which stands in the foreground in this performance. Rather, the two protagonists commit themselves to a chamber-music-like reading which is distinguished by the dynamically moderate intonation of the orchestra and the slender tone of the soloist throughout. An ever-welcome encore is found on side two with Bruch's ""Kol Nidrei"", performed with verve and a good portion of romantic, melting sweetness which allows this evergreen to flourish.."" This fast and furious orchestral work with piano, which begins with what must surely be the most famous clarinet glissando of modern times, was composed with the intention of presenting as many facets as possible of music from the New World in the short space of around 15 minutes. In his ""Rhapsody In Blue"" Gershwin wanted to paint a musical kaleidoscope of America - our enormous melting pot, our typical national traits, our blues, our seething city life. With this in mind, Leonard Bernstein made a number of recordings of the work and among the many excellent recordings that he made as a conductor or as a soloist, this present version with the Columbia Orchestra, from 1959, is especially of note.

Today it is difficult to understand that despite the tremendous Bach renaissance that took place in the 19th century many compositions by the Cantor of St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig had been underrated. The Cello Suites, for example, have been regarded for almost 300 years as purely a set of tricky etudes that every virtuoso in the making simply must tackle. What recording engineers and their equipment can bring to the ears is quite astounding. So it was back in the Thirties with Pablo Casal's legendary recording against which every cellist is measured today and to whose perfection he aspires.Janos Starker's recording of the Suites from 1965 makes a lasting impression on the listener, even when compared with other recordings from the digital era, and even record producers who are well used to recorded excellence have been highly impressed. For Charlotte Gilbert of the Mercury record label, these recording sessions were one of five truly great events in all her 20 years of recording experience. Without a doubt, Starker allows his instrument to resound freely but without forcing the tone. Starker's full-bodied sound and technical brilliance are complemented by his finely chiselled interpretation that lends immense expression to Bach's thrilling harmony and verve to the strict rhythmic construction of the movements. Just listen to his organ-like double-stopped passages, the eloquent dialogues, and the pure excitement created by his highly individual treatment of tempo. Then you will surely agree with the often-quoted paradox that Bach's Cello Suites are 'polyphony for a solo instrument'..

Now available on LP, Oceans for Eros was the debut EP from London-based guitarist and composer Robin Katz, released in October 2024. It features, six works for classical guitar and orchestra, with arrangements by Guy Barker OBE - trumpeter, composer, and one of British jazz's most distinguished arrangers. The record draws on Katz's background spanning art forms, channelling jazz, folk, and classical influences into music of fulsome romantic depth. Mediterranean landscapes, themes of light and darkness, and the quiet optimism of the post-pandemic moment all find their way into compositions built around the textures of the nylon string guitar set against a rich orchestral palette. Praised by Jamie Cullum as "incredibly beautiful... a lost classic," Oceans for Eros remains a striking opening statement from a guitarist set on a path of thought-provoking and wide-ranging creative output to date.

Douglas J. Cuomo's 'a raft, the sky, the wild sea' is a powerful concerto written for Grammy-winning saxophonist Joe Lovano, blending contemporary classical form with the expressive freedom of jazz. Structured in three movements, the work moves between moments of stillness and turbulence, inviting the listener into an unfolding, present-tense musical journey. Commissioned by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Winston-Salem Symphony, the piece reflects a close creative partnership between Cuomo and Lovano, whose artistry and openness shape the music from within. Performed here with the Winston-Salem Symphony conducted by Michelle Merrill, the recording captures a distinctive sound world of lyricism, risk and emotional clarity. Dedicated to refugees and displaced people around the world, a raft, the sky, the wild sea is both a personal meditation and a broader reflection on human journeys across uncertain terrain.

This album, which features both of Schumann's concertos with an exceptional cast of performers, has been among the best sellers in the Teldec catalog since it's release over thirty years ago. It will be released on vinyl for the very first time, shortly before Argerich's 85th birthday (on June 5th). "In her live recording Martha Argerich gives a vividly compelling, characteristically volatile reading of the Schumann Concerto, at once poetic and full of fancy, not to say powerful and often wildly individual. The performance, recorded live in July 1992, culminates in an account of the finale so daring one wants to cheer at the end" Gramophone

If music... showcases star countertenor Jakub Józef Orlinski in 17 songs and arias by three composers of the Baroque era: Purcell, Handel and Fux. Perhaps unexpectedly, he is partnered not by an ensemble of period instruments but by a pianist - his long-standing colleague Michal Biel. "On this album we have combined arias and songs that inspire and speak to us, " says Jakub Józef Orlinski. "I love thinking of albums as pages out of my diary. They are a statement of where I am as an artist." As Michal Biel, who draws on all the possibilities of a Steinway grand piano, freely admits: "If music... is not an answer to the question of how to perform these masterpieces with historical authenticity." He sees each aria or song as "a carefully considered transcription that reveals it's appeal transcending instrumentation".

"Even the smallest gesture can shift the course of another's world"; this is the magical truth that Peter Sandberg has instilled in his new album, Temporary Coexistence of Humans. Each of the thirteen original pieces sketches a profound portrait of one of the many distinct forms of connection that we as humans experience in our everyday lives. Some of these focus on interactions with the world around us-a dance with a stranger or a fleeting moment of affection-while others are more intimate ruminations about self-doubt or identity. Performing on solo piano, Peter Sandberg invites us into the chaotic wonder of humanity and what it means to navigate this world of precarious, yet beautiful, chance. Peter Sandberg has amassed a huge following since his music featured in seasons three and four of the record-breaking Netflix series Stranger Things.

Revered for his Hammond organ work, soul-jazz grooves, and his three-decade career leading The James Taylor Quartet, maestro keyboard player James Taylor releases his first album of classical works. His long association with Acid Jazz Records continues, as the label also steps into the classical world for the very first time. Recorded solo on a Steinway grand piano, Taylor performs some of his favorite pieces from the classical cannon, with familiar tunes alongside lesser-known works on this beautiful, atmospheric recording. His interpretations show a deep love of classical music. Always one to evolve, just as the James Taylor Quartet introduced Herbie Hancock to the indie scene of the late '80s, Taylor in turn introduces his audience to a new repertoire, with a remarkable, fresh and modern solo classical piano album.

'Blinded by Fame', Dutch Interiors second studio album, is a fanfavorite. Never before pressed to vinyl. The Long Beach based6 piece have been in each other's lives for the better partof two decades. Jack Nugent, Conner Reeves,Shane & Hayden Barton, Davis Stewart, and Noah Kurtzwere all childhood friends, and the band is a product ofa creative union brought on by already-established trustand familiar insularity. You can begin to pick up theseparate stylings and personalities of the band membersby the songs they independently write before bringingthem to the band at large, where the tracks often grow into newforms altogether. Despite this individual approach tosongwriting, they describe each other as"branches of the same core life" whose colliding influencesand experience all bleed into the songs. With Influences spanning from ambient to southern rock to jazz to dance music, the band shapeshiftsand oscillates between alternative country, sharply hewn indie rock and hints of dissonant ambience, all while still sounding like a band who both speak their own private language and translate it into something universal. Coming off the release of their most recent album, 'Moneyball', and a New EP,'It's Glass', via Fat Possum, Dutch Interior is here to stay. With her new album, State of Matter, acclaimed Polish cellist and composer Dobrawa Czocher pushes her artistry into new territories. Composed amidst a move from Warsaw to the Baltic coast, surrounded by the ocean's horizon and dense forestry, the album reflects curiously on what lies beyond and embracing the unknown. It is an ode to the courage to grow through uncertainty. The music unfolds as a journey of emotional phases, a narrative arc from the internal introspective questioning of "Monologue," to a sonic leap into motion with the rhythmic propulsion of "Blue", and the cyclical farewell in "Goodbye". Known for her atmospheric, emotionally rich compositions, Czocher has expanded her sound world, while holding true to her classical roots. She uses percussive cello techniques, Moog synthesizers, non-analog electronics, and her own voice instrumentally and without lyrics, creating a texture of expression. Recorded at the historic Studio S4 at Polish Radio in Warsaw with engineer Mateusz Danek, State of Matter balances technical craft with expressive spontaneity, it's driven by Czocher's tension between precision and intuition. It is a work that breathes, pulses, and listens back. State of Matter marks a turning point in Dobrawa Czocher's creative path-an album that reflects not only where she is, but where she dares to go.
