After coming to prominence as resident organistof the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Iveta Apkalnahas most recently been to the Far East, where in2018 she inaugurated Asia's largest concert organin Kaohsiung, Taiwan. She has now recorded hernew album on the organ at the NationalKaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying). It isan impressive instrument: Almost 10,000 pipes inover 120 registers, located in a twin organ. On theright-hand half of the stage is the great symphonicorgan, which recreates the aesthetic timbre of theFrench Romantic style. And on the left there is thesmaller "echo organ", oriented on the GermanBaroque repertoire. On this new album, IvetaApkalna has compiled a programme that unitesthe two organs by placing the focus on the FrenchRomantic style and making a brief foray to thefather of organ music, J.S. Bach. In this recital, prize-winning Canadian pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko explores the evolving language, dramatic breadth and technical daring of Alexander Scriabin's piano works. The album charts the remarkable evolution of Scriabin's musical language from his earliest pieces, to the sensual, volatile Piano Sonata No. 5, which stands at the summit of Scriabin's creative trajectory. As a resonant counterpart, Izik-Dzurko plays Rachmaninov's brooding Piano Sonata No. 1 in D minor. A digital-only release of four early piano works by Scriabin is also available on 9.70408. Jack Brymer's work is well represented on record as an outstanding orchestral player and concerto soloist. He also made appearances directing The London Wind Soloists on the Decca label in the 1960s, notably in the five LP set of Mozart Complete Wind Music (1963). But of his recital work with piano there is very little apart from a Discourses LP release, and the Nimbus album recorded in October 1973 and released in 1979. This recital contained two cornerstones of Brymer's repertoire, one or both of them invariably included in virtually every concert he gave, Weber's 'Grand Duo Concertant' and Brahms' F minor Sonata. The LP remained in the catalogue until Nimbus closed it's LP manufacturing in the early 1980s. The present issue is the first reissue in any format. The session notes show an entirely trouble-free couple of days. They include ideas for further projects, listing music by Schubert, Brahms, Poulenc and Hindemith, but no return visits occurred at this time. We do not know precisely the date of birth and death of Gaetano Sborgi, a composer who lived between the second half of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth. We can say with reasonable certainty that Sborgi was born in Florence, as in the frontispiece of his sonatas he states that he is Florentine. Sborgi was chapel master and piano-forte teacher at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He studied with his brother (or father according to Picchianti) Gasparo and then moved to Naples in the Conservatory of S. Onofrio, where he had Marco Santucci as a companion and where he stayed for seventeen years. Back in Florence "he made himself known.... with several of his theatrical pieces of real good taste, and in others of different kinds. He had three works of piano sonatas printed, which show his genius and talent". Six harpsichord sonatas dedicated to Lorenzo Niccolini, ciamberlano of Peter Leopold i and Ferdinand iii, can be included in the context of those compositions that show the gradual transition from the traditional harpsichord with plucked strings to the new conception, piano et forte, with struck strings. Jacopo Sibilia uses a copy of a 1783 Stein fortepiano, which can be played with two different types of action, in order to make the performance more expressive and harmonious. In the Netherlands in the first half of the 19th century, musical life was still in it's infancy. There were no orchestras of international stature, and the dividing line between the inspired amateur and the professional musician was as yet unclear. Two musicians, Johann Wilhelm Wilms (1772-1847) and Johannes Meinardus Coenen (1824-1899), played an important role in the gradual establishment of a professional musical life. Johann Wilms may be counted among the leading Dutch composers of his generation. His many activities as a composer, musician, organist and organizer have been of invaluable importance to musical life in the Netherlands. Wilms is chiefly remembered as the composer of Wien Neêrlands bloed, which served as the Dutch national anthem before Wilhelmus. Wilms' compositions were published in Germany, Britain and Denmark as well as the Netherlands. In his Concertino in G minor for flute and orchestra (c.1814), Wilms balances on the borderline between the classical and the romantic. At times, the piece displays a Beethovian flair.Theodoor Verhey (1848-1929) seems to have been of a somewhat less ambitious disposition than Johann Wilms or Johan Coenen. Alter attending the School of Music in his home town Rotterdam and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, Verhey studied for four years with Woldemar Bargiel, a stepbrother of Clara Schumann and a member of the Leipzig circle around Schumann, Brahms and Joachim.Verhey's music moves comfortably within the musical conventions of his day. He preferred to use classical forms and harmonies. The strength of his flute concertos lies in their almost disarming simplicity and in the efficient vehicle they provides for the flute to show off it's expressive powers through the registers in a virtuoso display. The gypsy manner ('alla zingara'), which Verhey often uses, naturally invites such a display.Played with great virtuosity, flair and sensitivity by Jacques Zoon, one of the world's foremost flute players. He was solo flutist of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Luzern Festival Orchestra (handpicked by Claudio Abbado) and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. When one first imagines the sound of a magisterial bass voice and a pipe organ, one cannot help but image some sort of glorious Vox Dei pronouncing eternal truths from the numinous beyond, but in this extraordinary recital from Danish-Spanish organist and composer and acclaimed Danish bass-baritone Jakob Bloch Jespersen, Eros and Agape are twined and intertwined. Three incredibly different song cycles from three outstanding Danish composers explore this unique sound world; the late Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen is represented in what may well be his musical Last Will and Testament, a set of transcriptions from his opera Sun Rises, Sun Sets based on the Biblical Song of Solomon. Bent Lorentzen, one of the key figures and pioneers of early Danish electronic music explores the themes of love, sensual and divine in a manner somewhat reminiscent of a Nordic Messiaen in his song cycle Erotic Hymns. Our recital concludes with Nicolai Worsaae's emotionally (and sonically) devastating theater piece for bass voice and organ, A Shipwreck, which explores the themes of life, death, and resurrection, pushing the magnificent organ at Our Saviour's Church (Vor Frelsers Kirke), Copenhagen to it's expressive limits, all captured vividly by one of Denmark's most celebrated recording engineers, Preben Iwan.A MUST HEAR for vocal and organ aficionados! This recording is a live recording of Niccolo Jommelli's one-act opera La Critica from the Order Hall of Ludwigsburg Palace on November 20, 2016. The Austrian ensemble Concerto Stella Matutina, conducted by Thomas Platzgummer, presents the rediscovery of this brilliantly triumphant parody of opera seria with a cast of outstanding singers in fine form, including tenor Jan Petryka and soprano Marie-Sophie Pollak. During the long, uneasy days of the Covid Pandemic, I listened to radio dramas of the 1940's and 50's. These tales of extortion, infidelity and murder were filled with ominous organ hits, creaking doors, stilted dialog and droll one-liners; a mix of the deadly serious with the absurd.Radio Noir recalls the strange pandemic mood of dusk encroaching and isolation. ___Joseph M. Shostakovich's Sixth and Ninth Symphonies stand as sharply contrasting yet deeply connected reflections of a century scarred by violence, fear, and forced optimism. The Sixth Symphony, composed in 1939 at the height of Stalin's Great Terror, opens with a vast, searing Largo that unfolds like a requiem for a silenced society-mourning lost friends, broken lives, and collective suffering. It's bleak introspection is followed by movements of icy detachment and grotesque parody, where frantic energy and empty cheer mask a profound spiritual void. Through this unsettling trajectory, Shostakovich speaks with "secret freedom," revealing a truth that words could not safely express: a tragic meditation on human dignity under oppression.Written in 1945, the Ninth Symphony defies expectations of monumental victory music. Instead of triumphal bombast, Shostakovich offers a compact, ironic, and life-affirming work, brimming with wit, clarity, and subtle defiance. Beneath it's Haydnesque lightness and carnival spirit linger shadows of war, grief, and memory-solemn brass rituals, elegiac melodies, and moments of fragile reflection. In this recording, the Janácek Philharmonic Orchestra and Daniel Raiskin illuminate the symphonies' dual nature: tragedy entwined with irony, joy haunted by loss. Together, these works form a powerful portrait of resilience, humanity, and artistic truth in the face of history's darkest pressures. Danish Dynamite! The Danish Quartet, established in the 1930s, was quite famous for more than two decades in Denmark as well as abroad. Many composers wrote music for their nontraditional setting, such as, on this album, Niels Viggo Bentzon, Fini Henriques, Herman D. Koppel, Otto Mortensen, and Knudage Riisager. With one exception (Riisager) it is all world premiere recordings performed by today's highly ranked and award-winning Swedish-Danish musicians: Janne Thomsen (flute), Cecilia Zilliacus (violin), Andreas Brantelid (cello), and Bengt Forsberg (piano). With Magische Töne, Jonas Kaufmann returns to the world of operetta and late Romantic opera, presenting a collection of some of the genre's most beautiful and beloved melodies. Recorded in Budapest with the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra under the baton of Dirk Kaftan, the album celebrates the rich musical heritage of the Austro Hungarian Empire (1867-1918). The new recording brings together perennial favourites by Emmerich Kálmán, Franz Lehár, and Paul Abraham, alongside lesser known treasures such as Bob's entrance aria from Jeno Huszka's (Bob Herceg). Several duets enrich the programme further, including the sparkling "Komm mit nach Varasdin" from Gräfin Mariza, performed with soprano Nikola Hillebrand, one of today's most sought after voices. Among the collection's highlights are the two opera arias "Hazám, hazám" from Ferenc Erkel's Bánk bán and the album's title track, "Magische Töne" from Karl Goldmark's Die Königin von Saba. These works demonstrate Kaufmann's versatility across contrasting styles and vocal demands, resulting in a glowing tribute to a cosmopolitan era of European music. 'Nothing short of phenomenal' (Fanfare), British-American clarinettist Jean Johnson makes her Linn debut with her partner and husband, pianist Steven Osborne. A keen chamber musician, who has performed in some of the world's finest venues, Jean has assembled a programme of luscious Romantic works. Albeit not included in this recital, Brahms serves as the link to all four works. Gustav Jenner was his only long-term pupil; the teacher's stylistic shadow can be sensed in Jenner's Clarinet Sonata, an ambitious work showcasing the instrument's innate mellifluousness. Robert and Clara Schumann were Brahms's friends and mentors, and Jean has recorded arrangements of their beautiful Romances. Weber aptly closes the recital - Brahms delayed his retirement after hearing his clarinet concerto - with the Grand Duo Concertant. UPC: 691062076326Label: Linn RecordsRelease Date: 4.10.26Format: CD

Jinhyung Park, winner of the 2023 Jaen Prize International Piano Competition, explores the multifaceted nature of his instrument in this meeting of three 19th-century masters. Brahms' Handel Variations - a birthday gift to Clara Schumann - employs an infinite variety of pianistic and motivic devices, while Granados' Los requiebros is a dazzling interpretation of the Spanish jota folk dance. Dvorak's formidable Second Piano Quintet is swept along by an enveloping lyricism that distils the very spirit of the composer. UPC: 747313467273Label: NaxosRelease Date: 4.10.26Format: CD
With "Beethoven for Flute and Piano - Part II", audite continues it's CD series exploring the composer's contributions to this instrumentation. While the first release, "But in my style!", focused on the late works, this new double album turns to the composer's early Viennese period. Here, the flute does not appear merely as an ad libitum instrument, but takes centre stage as the tonal focus of both original compositions and arrangements. The spectrum ranges from a version revised and authorised by Beethoven himself to adaptations by Friedrich Hermann. In this way, the selection also offers a glimpse into the historical reception of his music. Together with the first volume, it presents a richly varied panorama of Beethoven's oeuvre for flute and piano. UPC: 4022143978240Label: AuditeRelease Date: 4.17.26Format: CD
Born in 1626, John Dowland was an English Renaissance composer, lutenist, and singer, often regarded as one of the greatest masters of the lute song. His melancholic music, filled with deep emotional expression, perfectly captures the mood of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. His famous works include the Bookes of Songes or Ayres and Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares, featuring pieces like "Flow my tears" and "Come heavy sleep". Dowland's compositions are characterized by their exquisite balance between poignant vocal melodies and intricate lute accompaniments, as well as his virtuosic solo lute pieces, which are still staples in the repertoire today.

David Hackbridge Johnson, born near London in 1963, is an all-round musician - not only a prolific composer but also a conductor, violinist, singer, pianist, jazz drummer and poet. Both works in this album, recorded under the baton of the composer, have extra-musical stimuli. The Piano Concerto evokes the Kafkaesque fantasy world and tragic fate of the Polish-Jewish writer and artist Bruno Schulz, a victim of Nazi oppression - and it also marks the early death of another uniquely gifted individual, since it was written for Jonathan Powell, whose last recording it became. The Symphony, taking it's lead from earlier composers like Bax, Britten and Vaughan Williams, is a response to the English landscape, as seen through the paintings of a number of artists whose work Hackbridge Johnson esteems - it's colours and moods changing as kaleidoscopically as nature itself. With Organ Landscapes X (Leipzig), renowned organist and Baroque specialist Jorg Halubek concludes his acclaimed album series Organ Landscapes. The tenth and final chapter of a fascinating journey of discovery to Germany's great historic organs. The crowning finale takes us to what is probably the most important place in organ history: St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Johann Sebastian Bach worked and made music history. Here, the magnificent Sauer organ (1889/1908) resounds-an instrument of unique tonal depth, which Halubek brings to life with masterful sensitivity and Baroque expressiveness. This album is not only a musical highlight, but also a worthy conclusion to an ambitious project that celebrates the diversity and beauty of the German organ landscape.
