Unfortunately, that recording never was released. Fortunately, however, a 1957 performance in Florence has preserved an Ernani featuring those three singers, alongside a bass of Boris Christoff's caliber. Perhaps the most interesting aspect, however, is the conductor - in this fortunate instance, none other than Dimitri Mitropoulos - who delivered what critics hailed as a revolutionary interpretation of the opera. Guillaume Lekeu (1870-1894) was born in Heusy, near Verviers, already showing an early interest in music and he began composing as a teenager. After moving to Paris, he studied with Cesar Franck and later with Vincent d'Indy, both of whom strongly influenced his musical language. Despite his short life-he died of typhoid fever at the age of only twenty-four-Lekeu produced a body of work distinguished by it's emotional depth, rich harmonies, and highly personal style. His music combines the cyclical forms of Franck with the expressive intensity of Wagner and the structural influence of Beethoven.Among Lekeu's chamber works, the Cello Sonata in F major occupies a special place. Composed in 1888 when he was only eighteen years old, the sonata reveals an astonishing level of maturity and originality. Written in four movements, it already displays many characteristics that would define his later music: long, singing melodies, chromatic harmonies, and a deeply introspective atmosphere. The work alternates between passionate outbursts and moments of lyrical tenderness, creating a powerful emotional narrative. Rather than treating the piano as a simple accompaniment, he creates a true dialogue between the two performers. The music often conveys a sense of longing and melancholy, qualities that became hallmarks of his style. As a fitting addition we hear the hauntingly beautiful Larghetto for cello and orchestra, in the arrangement for cello and piano.This is the 5th instalment of the 'French Cello Sonatas', played by Marina Tarasova and Ivan Sokolov. Giaches de Wert (1535-1596) was one of the most important composers of the late sixteenth-century Italian madrigal. Born in the Low Countries, probably in Weert, he spent most of his professional life in Italy, where he became closely associated with the musical culture of Ferrara and Mantua. His career brought him into contact with some of the leading composers and poets of the period, and his music played an important role in the development of the expressive madrigal immediately before Monteverdi. De Wert composed around 230 madrigals, published in numerous books between 1558 and 1595. His madrigals demonstrate a remarkable evolution in style. His early works are rooted in the contrapuntal traditions of the Renaissance, with balanced vocal lines and carefully constructed polyphony. In his later compositions, however, he increasingly employed a more dramatic and expressive musical language. Textual expression became central, with changes of rhythm, harmony, register, and texture used to underline the meaning and emotional character of the poetry. De Wert frequently set texts by the great Italian poet Torquato Tasso, whose highly dramatic poetry inspired some of his most striking madrigals. He also used poetry by Giovanni Battista Guarini and other prominent writers. His settings reveal a particular sensitivity to images of love, longing, despair, jealousy, and separation. Short musical gestures and sudden contrasts can give individual words and phrases an almost theatrical intensity. His later madrigals are especially significant because they anticipate developments associated with the early Baroque. de Wert experimented with homophonic passages, expressive dissonance, rapidly changing textures, and vivid word-painting, while still retaining the sophistication of Renaissance polyphony. His music therefore occupies an important position between the mature Renaissance madrigal and the emerging dramatic style of composers such as Claudio Monteverdi. Monteverdi himself admired de Wert's music, and de Wert's influence can be heard in the expressive madrigal tradition that flourished around 1600. He spent the first part of his musical career in Hungary before moving to Vienna in the mid-1790s, where he became Kapellmeister to the Imperial Court and court composer in 1818. His music combines brilliance and immediate appeal with solid compositional structure, harmonic inventiveness, and a masterful understanding of wind instruments. Krommer's concertos therefore rank among the finest works in the clarinet repertoire of the Classical era.The well-known Concerto in E flat major, Op. 36, is joined by two works that Krommer originally composed for other instruments and later reworked for clarinet: another Concerto in E flat major, originally written for oboe, and the dramatically charged Concerto in E minor, originally intended for flute. The two concertos for two clarinets develop a dialogue between equal soloists, with the later work culminating in a brilliant Alla Polacca finale. The album concludes with the previously unrecorded Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra. Even if the name Vicente Lusitano is hardly known today, he is probably the most important composer in Portuguese history. And he is probably also the first black composer whose works appeared in print: Born around 1520 in Olivenca, Portugal, he is described in sources as a pardo (Portuguese for half-breed), his mother was probably of African descent. Lusitano was a Catholic priest for a time and came to Rome in the entourage of the Portuguese papal ambassador. In Italy, he soon made a name for himself as a music theorist and his theoretical writings appeared in various publications. In 1561 he converted to the Protestant faith and went to France and Germany, where his traces are lost. Only a few of Lusitano's works have survived, including his Liber primus epigramatum printed in Rome in 1551 - a collection of a total of 23 magnificent sacred motets for 5 to 8 voices with direct references to Josquin Desprez.
