Kalia Vandever and Dave Harrington team up for their first collaboration together with the debut album Evergreen. The two met in 2025 while Vandever was supporting Harrington on the road during the DARKSIDE tour in North America. Vandever is an accomplished trombonist and composer whose albums have brought them all over the world, performing at jazz festivals and clubs. Harrington, often known for his revolutionary band DARKSIDE, is one of music's great guitarists who has created a world around his playing blending genres of jazz, electronic, and more. The duo's debut album Evergreen is the confluence o f these elements. A blend of jazz and electronic music that feels all their own.Recorded over a three-day period i n Los Angeles during February 2026, Vandever and Harrington hunkered down in the Sudden Quarterly studios during a pummeling rainstorm. The feeling and atmosphere during the sessions was introspective and emotional, two sentiments that aren't often associated with the usually sunny city of LA. Harrington's guitar is sometimes a wall of sound, reflecting the downpours outside, and at other moments it is gentle and reflective. Feelings o f stillness, nostalgia, and longing are conveyed by the trombone playing of Vandever. At times soaring and triumphant and others breathy and insular, Vandever draws the listener into their world. These two great artists welcome the listener into an entirely new space that has yet t o appear on either o f their respective solo albums. Sometimes the music is dark and electronic with prominent drum machines, samples, and heavy guitars. At other times the songs are intimate and melodic, with brass leading the songs and the guitar tones feeling personal and close. Kalia Vandever and Dave Harrington create a powerful album with Evergreen that is equally heartbreaking and joyous. In a sweeping encapsulation, IWAPMF is akin to walking through a tabernacle where the shutters are thrown open & the melange of pastoral scents such as jasmine, honeysuckle & gardenia envelop the ponderous pop & sonic otherness wafting off this LP. Glints of Normil Hawaiians, Blue Orchids, Mekons & Television Personalities flicker like embers from the past, smoldering gloriously in the present. C. punk band Rites of Spring, who recorded much of the album at his home studio in Philmont. Other sessions took place in Nairobi with Kenyan musicians from the Luo community, while a brief but mesmerizing cameo from Alvarius B. , aka Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls, was recorded in Cairo. The far-flung cast reflects Jensen's decade abroad and his changing relationship with America, while the record itself refuses to separate music from the world around it. Jensen is hardly new to creative mischief. His previous exploits include the cult pseudo-documentary The Low-Down Dirty DAWGS, prank-phone duo Earles & Jensen, and the pop duo The Special Moments. New! Coke New! Coke turns that same restless, off-kilter sensibility toward songwriting. After spending roughly a decade living outside the United States, primarily in the West Indies, Egypt, and Kenya, Jensen returned home with the peculiar sensation of an anthropologist studying his own tribe. The underground culture he had once considered home had become strangely foreign. Romantic upheavals, loneliness, encounters with spirituality, deaths and disappearances, and the accumulated absurdity of simply being alive all found their way into the songs. So did a songwriting method that sounds like something between numerology, the early-'70s novel The Dice Man, and a particularly deranged reinterpretation of American Top 40. On the first day of recording, with no songs ready to go, Jensen asked Fellows to pick a decade, a year, a month, a day, and finally a number. The result was October 14, 1972, and the No. 33 song on that week's chart: "Loving You Just Crossed My Mind" by obscure country-pop singer Sam Neely. Jensen had never heard it. He found it "ponderous and forgettable. Worse than Dan Fogelberg. " But he borrowed a couple of chords, adapted the title, and found his way into a song. He ultimately used the same accidental process on at least half the record. "The rest, " he says, "I just dragged out of the river. "That collision of sincerity and absurdity is central to New! Coke New! Coke. Jensen is interested in the place where the joke and the heartfelt confession become indistinguishable. The songs move freely between love, spirituality, technological dread, mythology, memory, and outright weirdness, populated by a singular pantheon of saints including Herbert Huncke, Darby Crash, Hamish Kilgour, Queen Nanny, and Ernie K-Doe. "The Swimmer, " "Blackstar Blues, " and the title track wrestle with dislocation and unstable belonging; "Take the Child to the Moon, " "Honey's Rising, " and "There's Still Love (in Old San Francisco)" find hope and wonder in the wreckage; while "425 Park Avenue" brings together New York, the Black Moon, and the encroaching technological singularity. The stories behind the songs are no less strange. "Honey's Rising" concerns a dog Jensen and his father adopted after his parents' divorce who escaped through an open gate and was never seen again. "Loving You Has Just Crossed My Mind" partly recalls an incident in which, after being shot as a teenager, Jensen asked the paramedics whether the Kansas City Royals had won. "The Swimmer" is a retelling of a friend's spectacular psychological misadventure in Jamaica involving marijuana, a swimming pool, a spear gun, a roof, a water tank, an attempted escape from a moving van transporting him to a police station, and several days recovering in his parents' bed. For all it's darkness and dislocation, New! Coke New! Coke is ultimately a hopeful record. Jensen makes no claim to strict autobiography. Memory, hallucination, mythology, exaggeration, and absurdity are deliberately blurred. He wants listeners to find love, curiosity, amusement, and perhaps a little productive discomfort. What matters most is the emotional truth. As for the artist whose career he would most like to emulate, the answer is immediate:"My idol is Jonathan Richman. Recorded in a backyard punk dump by Memphis audio legend Andrew McCalla, Gravity finally sounds like Ibex Clone in the flesh. A powerful live trio unencumbered by allegiance to any genre signifiers, making physical music in the environment that best suits them. Whereas their first two albums projected cautious visions of utopia through a glassy, hard-edged lens, Gravity pulls everything inward into something altogether warmer and stronger, personal and immediate. This is the folk-tinged rock of the Kinks and Fairport Convention, but filtered through a fuzzy SST sensibility, a decidedly progressive album with as much time for pop hooks as post punk's thousand-yard stare. Undergirded by Alec McIntyre's sinuous basslines, George Willford stretches out into languid solos and ambient passages of flanging, e-bowed guitar. Drummer Meredith Lones takes a much stronger vocal presence, her voice a silver lining that draws the band's dense, heady arrangements into call-and-response earworm territory, emphasizing the earnestness and care in Williford's Pollard-esque vocal calisthenics. Gravity presents a mature band firing on all cylinders, exercising the muscular restraint of late-period Fugazi with the melodic nimbleness of Guided By Voices and Dinosaur Jr. Gravity pulls things together. After a long period of deconstruction, some form of reconstruction must begin. Rather than looking ahead toward utopia, Ibex Clone find themselves flowering amid the detritus of today, finding wonderful new things to build out of all the old parts. Featuring tracks by Mountain, Judee Sill, Sugluk, Moby Grape, Fairport Convention, Todd Rundgren, Scott Walker, Tim Hardin, and Mountain Bus (who supplies Rosali, the album's fitting closer, a great Dead-infused jam leading into the cosmic thicket). Silver Paper, the lead-off single, takes Mountain's earnest, ripped and ragged soul vocal (aptly supplied by the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson) and fretboard pyrotechnics into a (much) higher key. 30th Century Man injects the Scott Walker chestnut with exploding fuzz solos and lost, late-night vox (courtesy of Ty Segall, the perfect foil for Walker's velvet croon). Fall Away, a track from the seminal Native North Americacomp on Light in the Attic, swaps the inimitable First Nations backbeat with Crazy Horse chug and blasting fuzz.For those who've lost Howlin Rain's trail over the years, or hopped off in the years following The Russian Wilds, this LP represents a hard reset, a stunning infusion of psychedelic vigor, a glorious reinvention of a band that's no stranger to new beginnings. Following her foundational role in the early years of The Fall, and then the searing post punk of The Blue Orchids, as well as several tours serving as a backing group for Velvet Underground chanteuse Nico, Una Baines found herself starting 1985 without a band. Drafting together members of the all-female Beyond The Glass, and compatriots associated with her past projects, she entered the studio with a clutch of songs and a willingness to experiment. Separating the sides into "waxing", for the more traditional songs, and "waning", where the structures become looser and varied, the resulting album was the sole release on her Taboo Records and seemed quickly lost to time, but feels shockingly current in both feminist content, and freak folk execution. It is a collection of influences that would emerge decades later in the wyrd folk movement, and Furia is not out of place at an intersection of Devendra Banhart and Meg Baird, but there was absolutely nothing like it in 1986. Upon release, Mark E. Smith famously likened it to Third Ear Band, having to dip back to 1970 for a touchstone. Songs like "Bridget of Ireland" could be traditional ballads from decades past, while "No Romance" is a lo-fi new wave hit waiting to happen. "Sheila/Beats My Heart" fashions The Velvet Underground as a feminist protest band, and "Ritual" plays out like all of the Motown girl groups banding together to tell the world that they don't need a boyfriend to solve all of their problems. It all draws on sources that are so familiar, yet turns them upside down in a celebratory fashion. Is it freak folk? Pagan punk? Pastoral drone? It is all of that and so much more. It is the sound of a woman, and an artist, truly finding her voice, and it is both magical and compelling."Remarkably prescient and weirdly beautiful record.
