Over the 20 year history of Land of Talk, Lizzie Powell has drifted to and from music, always interrogating their role as an artist. Sean Thompson has spent more than a decade becoming one of the most versatile guitarists in Nashville. He currently tours as a guitarist for Margo Price, and his nimble, lyrical playing has anchored bands led by Erin Rae and a long roster of Music City mainstays. He is also one third of the kosmische trio Shrunken Elvis, alongside Rich Ruth and Spencer Cullum, whose acclaimed self-titled debut arrived on Western Vinyl in 2025. With Inner Principles, his first entirely instrumental album, Thompson gathers all of those instincts into something that feels like a genuine new chapter. It is a jazz fusion record in the richest sense of the term: virtuosic but unfussy, exploratory, and stylistically restless from one track to the next. The eight pieces move easily between ECM-style spaciousness in the spirit of John Abercrombie, smoky acoustic picking, loose late-night boogies, and sleek post-rock adventures, with synths that flash now and then toward Jan Hammer territory. You could believe much of this music arrived in 1978 or 1983, and that timelessness is the point. That ensemble interplay is the heart of the record, and for all it's technical command, Inner Principles never coasts on chops. In resurrecting the band Krill-declared dead over 10 years ago-Jonah Furman considered the turritopsis nutricula: the "immortal jellyfish" that reverts to juvenile form instead of dying. "I was always afraid of coming home," he says. "But home is inescapable." Now living in the same Chicago suburb he grew up in, Furman ponders the passage of time on Secret Language, a nostalgic and cerebral exploration of family, fatherhood, and fated love. From 2010 to 2015, Krill recorded three LPs and two EPs, growing into a cult project revered for it's complex, rapturous compositions. Anxious, anthemic, mathy, propulsive, they were beloved by Frankie Cosmos, Girlpool, Horse Jumper of Love, and countless others. Personal lives took priority and brought the project to an official close, save for two reunion shows and a 2020 album under the name Knot, but that's retroactively a Krill album, "because it's easier that way."The project was revived "on a whim" as Furman puts it: "Theo from Ovlov asked if Krill wanted to open a Chicago show. Best known as one half of the innovative German electronic duo Mouse on Mars, Jan St. Werner also pursued a solo career as Lithops and under his own name. He began releasing solo music in the mid-'90s (around the time of his collaboration with Markus Popp as Microstoria), and through a series of 7 records he has innovated and explored the boundaries of electronic music. Werner's latest album, Squares Will Fall, began in 2012 as an electronic composition lasting exactly thirty minutes, created to mark the thirtieth birthday of a friend. Over time, the piece continued to evolve, eventually forming the foundation for an improvisation by Justin Vernon and Jan St. Werner during Mouse on Mars's Dimensional People sessions at Vernon's studio in Wisconsin. In 2021, "Squares Will Fall" assumed a new form as a multidirectional loudspeaker choreography created for the Ural Industrial Biennial. Three independent layers of the composition were transmitted through loudspeakers suspended via long ropes from the circus ceiling and were continuously repositioned by the performers. In 2026, Werner completed "Squares Will Fall" and created the first stereo mix at Mouse on Mars's Paraverse Studios. Andi Toma (Mouse on Mars) joined the final mixing sessions, contributing bass elements that subtly expanded the work's sonic depth. The resulting stereo version brings together more than a decade of transformations, preserving the piece's open, cut up character while translating it's spatial and performative origins into a form suitable for focused listening.Taken together as an album, the songs are a joyous musical adventure. Understanding the complexity of the songs origins is not required; as with all that he does, Werner's love of music and collaboration shines through in this inventive boundless listen.
