On their third full-length, ""Through the Hourglass"", WITCH RIPPER unleash the full potential of their stunning ability to deliver captivating melodies, catchy riffs, and merciless hooks in sheer droves. The US metal band perfectly combines melodic heaviness with pinches of progressive, sludge, and other styles with seeming ease. WITCH RIPPER can be generally located within the wider sonic realm that is inhabited by MASTODON, BARONESS, and HIGH ON FIRE, yet they also continue to channel the rock bombast of QUEEN and DAVID BOWIE as well as the modern prog of COHEED AND CAMBRIA and MUSE. WITCH RIPPER are also determined to tour across the United States and hope for a first voyage to Europe in support of ""Through the Hourglass"". Metal is anything but dead, and this album is living proof of it's vibrant present. Tracklist: 1. Odyssey in Retrograde 2. The Portal 3. Symmetry of the Hourglass 4. Echoes and Dust 5. Released in 1988 on Intense Records, Sacred Warrior's Rebellion didn't just introduce a new band to the Christian metal scene - it announced the arrival of one of the most ambitious, sophisticated, and powerful progressive metal acts of the era. Combining soaring vocals, intricate guitar work, dramatic songwriting, and spiritually charged themes, Sacred Warrior created an album that immediately separated itself from nearly everything else happening in Christian metal at the time.Drawing comparisons to Queensrÿche, Crimson Glory, Fates Warning, and Iron Maiden, Rebellion blended technical precision with emotional intensity in a way that felt both intelligent and deeply passionate. Rey Parra's commanding vocal performance became one of the defining elements of the album, effortlessly shifting from melodic restraint to powerful high-register intensity, while the band's musicianship delivered progressive arrangements without sacrificing heaviness or memorable hooks.Tracks like ""Rebellion,"" ""Heaven's Rage,"" and ""The Flood"" helped establish the album as an underground classic, but Rebellion works best as a complete listening experience - dramatic, cinematic, and spiritually thought-provoking from beginning to end. More than thirty-five years later, the album still sounds fresh, unique, and emotionally gripping.Over time, Rebellion has earned legendary status among Christian metal fans and collectors alike. The Angelic Warlord website awarded the album an incredible 95% review score and ranked it the #1 Christian Metal Album of 1988, placing it alongside the most respected releases of the entire decade. This definitive Retroactive Records Metal Icon Series edition finally gives Rebellion the deluxe vinyl treatment it deserves. Featuring a powerful remaster by Rob Colwell, stunning updated artwork and layout work by Scott Waters of NoLifeTilMetal, and a full-size 12x12 lyrics insert, this release presents the album with renewed clarity, depth, and visual impact.Pressed for the first time ever on Yellow Vinyl and limited to just 200 copies worldwide, this collector's edition celebrates one of the true masterpieces of Christian progressive power metal. For fans of Iron Maiden, Queensryche, and Crimson Glory! On Dummy's new album, do you love the color of the sky?, the Los Angeles-based 5-piece deliver a breathtaking piece of work that introduces new textures and rhythms to their already varied and refined catalog. For the band's third album, and first for new label home Polyvinyl, the group split time between self-recording at their home studio as well as Studio 22, linking up with frequent collaborator and engineer Joo-Joo Ashworth (Corridor, Automatic, Spiral XP). The band focused on intentionality and experimentation, exploring downtempo dance beats and electronic music while pushing the guitar as far as they could, using new self-sampling and processing techniques. Percussionist Alex Ewell's overall sound design and production skills can be heard across the album, with layered drum sounds and rhythmic tremolo techniques shining throughout. Tracks like ""Full Spectrum Dominance"" and ""Alluvial Fan"" showcase the band's tasteful pop sensibilities, while closing track ""Heaven's What You Make Of It"" features perhaps the strongest vocal delivery yet from vocalist/keyboardist Emma Maatman. Additionally, the dynamic exchange between guitarists Joe Trainor and Nathan O'dell is absolutely gorgeous, adding a new layer of immersion and directness that is unlike anything the band has done before. The result is Dummy's most ethereal and sincere record to date, with more feminine and delicate undertones that sit beautifully alongside the gritty and noisy textures the band has become known for. Dummy has been praised in numerous outlets such as Paste, Stereogum, Aquarium Drunkard and Pitchfork, who described their second album, Free Energy, as ""the sound of a band turning all it's potential energy into music that's dazzlingly kinetic and powerful."" The band has toured the US, UK, and EU extensively, with festival appearances at Austin Psych Fest, Treefort Music Festival, and others. In addition to larger outlets and festivals, the band's strong ties to community and DIY ethos are ever-present, oftentimes preferring to play and connect with different local artists on tour, uplifting those around them while shining a light on the history of independent music.

Black & brown marble colored vinyl. CASTLEBEAT is the lo-fi indie rock project of 32-year-old half-Korean, half-Spanish Josh Hwang, also founder of indie label Spirit Goth. His sound is a culmination of gripping pop hooks & cassette aesthetics delivered with dreamy, melancholic overtones often leaving listeners with a sense of false nostalgia. This album, CASTLEBEAT II, is a 10-year homage to the self-titled 2016 debut of the project, which garnered great attention in the underground indie scene. It's a reflective reconnection with the early CASTLEBEAT sound, revisited with the growth and perspective Hwang has gained over the past decade. Some of the songs trace back to ideas and sound textures that first appeared on the debut, reworked and re-contextualized rather than recreated. This record is about taking a moment to recount a chapter before moving forward. UPC: 611108175486Label: Spirit Goth RecordsRelease Date: 10.16.26Format: Vinyl
When, in the summer of 1869, the 29-year-old Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) received the suggestion from Mily Balakirev (1837-1910) to compose an overture to Romeo and Juliet, he was coming into his mature years, and was still a somewhat newly minted professor at the Moscow Conservatory. Like many of history's great composers, he was intended for the legal profession, and had from the age of 14 pursued that path rigorously in Saint Petersburg, eventually securing a job with the Ministry of Justice (1859-1862). Yet, from early childhood, he had shown a strong musical intuition, and an especial affinity for Mozart, whose music it was Tchaikovsky's 'sacred delight' to hear. When it was announced that the Russian Musical Society would open a conservatory in Saint Petersburg in 1862, Tchaikovsky enrolled, abandoning his legal career and maturing extraordinarily quickly under the guidance of Anton Rubinstein. From his mentor he absorbed the compositional process he would employ throughout his career: to sketch quickly to the end of the work before scoring, and to view his calling as a sacred responsibility. Released in 1989, Bloodgood's Out of the Darkness marked the beginning of a new era for one of Christian metal's most important bands. Following the departure of legendary guitarist David Zaffiro, many fans wondered what Bloodgood would sound like moving forward. The answer was an album that confidently carried the band into a more melodic, polished, and arena-ready hard rock direction without losing the heart, conviction, and intensity that made them legendary in the first place.Rather than trying to recreate the past, Bloodgood evolved. Out of the Darkness blends massive hooks, emotional songwriting, powerful rhythms, and polished production into a record that stands as one of the strongest melodic hard rock releases in the band's catalog. Tracks like ""Mad Dog World"" deliver driving energy and attitude, while ""Top of the Mountain"" remains one of the band's most uplifting and memorable anthems. Throughout the album, Les Carlsen's unmistakable voice carries both grit and vulnerability, giving the songs emotional weight that still resonates decades later.Often overlooked beside the band's earlier heavier material, Out of the Darkness has earned increasing appreciation over time for it's songwriting strength, maturity, and accessibility. Angelic Warlord ranked the album #18 on it's list of the Top 50 Christian Metal Albums of the 1980s - recognition that confirms the album's lasting impact and importance within the genre. For this definitive Retroactive Records vinyl edition, Rob Colwell's remaster brings new depth, warmth, and clarity to the recording, allowing these songs to hit harder and sound fuller than ever before. Scott Waters of NoLifeTilMetal also provides a refreshed artwork layout worthy of this classic release.More than thirty-five years later, Out of the Darkness remains a shining example of late-80s melodic hard rock done right - passionate, memorable, inspiring, and timeless. For fans of WASP, Barren Cross, Bride, Novella, Stryper, and Kiss! This is the ultimate version of this classic album. UPC: 732131700275Label: Retroactive RecordsRelease Date: 10.16.26Format: Vinyl
Seven years after 2019's 'The Dusk Loom', Petrels returns with a pair of new albums, Infangthief and Outfangthief. The first of these releases, Infangthief, was originally written and recorded in 2022, before being reworked in light of a subsequent album, Outfangthief, due to be released later this year. The two albums act as companion pieces, mirrors revealing facets of the other, overlapping in sound and subject matter. Though Outfangthief may have been written after Infangthief, it is no mere follow-up, with it's own creation causing a re-visiting and re-working of the earlier album, which in turn informed the writing of it's twin.Petrels is the solo project of musician and artist, Oliver Barrett. Since releasing his debut, Haeligewielle, in 2011 (#9 in A Closer Listen's Best Albums of the Decade), Petrels has toured across Europe and shared a stage with the likes of Jóhann Jóhannsson, Tim Hecker, FIRE!, Nate Young (Wolf Eyes), Trouble Books, Demdike Stare, Nadja, and Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster). Working from his home in Somerset, UK, Barrett has released numerous albums through his Floating Limb imprint, as well as mixing and/or mastering hundreds of releases for the likes of Keiji Haino, Loren Connors & Alan Licht, Judith Hamann, Incapacitants, Mette Rasmussen & Sofia Jernberg, Yasunao Tone and more""Petrels sidesteps the chilliness found in much of the music of his peers, replacing it instead with an almost spiritual ecstasy, his ravishing synths and almost choral vocal treatments calling out in cosmic, wide eyed wonder at the universe."" - Paul Margree, Louder Than War

Back to Pennsylvania, started (as so much great art does) in the beginning stages of a breakup in Brooklyn. Anna was weighted down by a sense of stagnation that required the kind of restart only returning home-to your childhood bed and bedroom, your parents backyard-can provide. So she went back to Pennsylvania. She sat at her hometown bar with her dad and his friends. She walked the sidewalks of her childhood. She spent time with her friends whose paths never quite diverged from that traditional, tale-as-old-as-time children's chant-love, marriage, babies in a baby carriage. Despite all the shakeups of her life-no more New York, no more boyfriend, an impending nationwide tour with Joe P, frequent writing trips to L.A.-Anna still felt static. But it was on one of those fateful writing trips to L.A. that she regained a sense of motion, writing the record's titular single. And what was supposed to be a single songwriting session with producer Gab Strum spun itself into 10 tracks reckoning with her new phase of life.

Released in 1990 on Intense Records, Sacred Warrior's Wicked Generation stands as one of the most ambitious and emotionally powerful albums ever released in Christian metal. At a time when most bands were content writing disconnected songs about fantasy, rebellion, or surface-level spirituality, Sacred Warrior delivered something far deeper - a progressive power metal concept album that fearlessly explored themes of abuse, pain, brokenness, justice, and ultimately healing and redemption.Musically, Wicked Generation pushed the band far beyond traditional heavy metal boundaries. Building on the progressive melodic metal style they had become known for, Sacred Warrior crafted a record filled with soaring vocals, intricate guitar work, dramatic arrangements, and emotionally charged songwriting. The influence of bands like Queensrÿche, Crimson Glory, and Fates Warning can certainly be heard, but Sacred Warrior carved out a sound and identity entirely their own - intelligent, melodic, heavy, and spiritually compelling.Songs flow together with purpose and emotional weight, creating an album experience that feels cinematic and immersive from beginning to end. Rather than offering easy answers, Wicked Generation wrestles honestly with darkness, trauma, and the consequences of human brokenness while still pointing toward hope and restoration. Few albums in Christian metal history attempted something this bold - and even fewer succeeded this completely.Over time, Wicked Generation has become a cult classic among fans of progressive and melodic metal, earning an impressive 85% review score from the Angelic Warlord website and continuing to gain appreciation from listeners discovering the album decades later. This definitive Retroactive Records Metal Icon Series edition finally gives the album the treatment it deserves. Rob Colwell's remaster breathes new life into the recording with greater depth, clarity, and power, while Scott Waters of NoLifeTilMetal provides stunning updated artwork and layout work worthy of this progressive metal masterpiece.More than thirty-five years later, Wicked Generation remains one of the most unique, intelligent, and emotionally resonant albums in Christian metal history - a fearless artistic statement that still sounds powerful today. There is a hush most of us only knew as children, the warm drift between familiar household sounds and being carried to bed, a place that belongs to you and to some self you have not met yet. June McDoom’s debut full-length, Follow the Light, lives in that dream space and then keeps walking, slipping out of time and waking somewhere new, barely familiar enough to feel like home yet wholly your own. She came up in a Jamaican household on the edge of the Florida Everglades, an existence built of extended family, communal care, bass and harmonics. Her father, a carpenter and a student of sound, built his own speakers and kept three sound systems going across as many rooms. His low end would rise through her bedroom floor like some wayward cat while she lay above it with folk records, finding harmonies that were new and hers alone. Two musics in one room. Lushness as past and premonition. She found folk on her own, somewhere between the cast recording of The Sound of Music and Simon and Garfunkel, while everyone around her called it sleepy music. She did not mind being the only one. The solitude let her fall for harmony first, before words, before anything else, and harmony is still the thing she reaches for.
Generationally speaking, the music was already in the air. Her grandfather, Colin Smith, is a distinguished mento man who played banjo and guitar and built his own rumba boxes, worked to keep Jamaica’s oldest acoustic folk form alive. Mento is the root of all of it: ska, rock steady, reggae, dub and everything after. He is the one who put a guitar in her hands. An inheritance, a gift and a map. Even her name is part of it, though she will tell you she landed on it more by feel than reason. She records as June McDoom, born Alyssa, June being a nickname one of her grandmothers, Joan, went by, a name she thought was cool to carry and simply liked the sound of. An etheric channel that reverberates all the same. A dub all its own.
Made slowly and by hand with her longtime partner Evan Wright, Follow the Light lays the harmony of folk over the rhythm of dub, with Dionne Warwick, Minnie Riperton, Pentangle and the washed guitars of Cocteau Twins haunting its outer edges. Voice and guitar seeking each other out first, then everything else stacked across long days in the studio they keep at home, restraint kept on purpose. The lead single “Without You” is the whole method surfacing, split open and sparkling like a geode in a creek bed. Angelic heroics, and nothing less. At the heart is family. Her grandmother Aggie, the light behind “Memory,” guiding still. And underneath, the quieter truth the record keeps: none of us are only one person, but a continuum of selves, the ones who shaped us and the ones we have yet to meet. Future you is an ancestor your current self gets to greet. Press play and the same invitation is yours: A few minutes out of time, a place that turns familiar the longer you stay until you surface somewhere new and find it was yours all along.

Amen Feizabadi presents his new chamber opera, 'Deep Siesta', on his portrait album. It tells the story of the artificial beings ok and Mani, who - born of digital chaos - discover the world with curiosity and an open mind. They encounter beauty and emotions, but also the contradictions and abysses of the human condition, and resolve to destroy humanity and, ultimately, themselves. With 'Deep Siesta', Feizabadi dares to offer a radical shift in perspective on the ubiquitous discourse surrounding artificial intelligence: we experience human existence from the AI's point of view. Through the protagonists' eyes, we look as though through a prism, in which our own reflection is shattered into it's myriad components and appears alien and shadowy to us.The 85-minute work 'Deep Siesta' focuses on acoustic music - performed by the Zafraan Ensemble and the Neue Vocalsolisten. However, the boundary between reality and virtuality becomes increasingly blurred by AI-generated voices, images and electronic sound effects. Dilek Mayatürk's libretto also enters into a dialogue with the aimless AI. Starting with scattered fragments of words and progressing to more complex linguistic connections, it builds to an emotional climax in the shift from German to Persian. This is interwoven with auratic elements of traditional Persian music, in an attempt at a universal reinterpretation. UPC: 4010228645026Label: Wergo GermanyRelease Date: 10.16.26Format: CD
More than two decades after releasing their debut album Can't Stop Rockin', San Diego's Chicano roots-rock veterans The Sleepwalkers return with Almas Perdidas, an eight-track record that showcases the evolving sound that has defined their musical journey for over 30 years. Released on Blind Owl Records, Almas Perdidas marks the label's first major 'Rock en Español' feature and introduces one of San Diego's longest-running Chicano rock bands to a wider audience. The Sleepwalkers blend roots rock, psychedelia, rockabilly, cumbia, and Chicano rock, reflecting the group's cultural identity and ever-changing sound. 'If anybody ever comes to our shows, they'll see that one minute we'll be playing a cumbia dance song, and then we'll switch it and do something that's Americana, or rockabilly, or even a country song,' Valenzuela says. Over the course of their career, The Sleepwalkers have shared stages with an impressive range of artists, including Poncho Sanchez, The Beat Farmers, Son Rope Pera, Rosie Flores, Ozomatli, and the Paladins. Featuring standout vocals from lead singer Johnny Valenzuela, and guitar work from Ritchie Orduño, Almas Perdidas honors the band's past while embracing the sounds that have continued to shape their artistic vision. Described by San Diego Troubadour as 'a blender with Los Lobos, Cowpunk à la the Blasters, and a dash of Texas roadhouse blues,' their newest album is a testament to the band's enduring sound while marking a new chapter in their career.
