In the mid-20th century, Louisville gospel music was occasionally recorded when members of the local gospel community pressed 45rpm records and LPs, and released them through grassroots record labels such as Sensational Sounds, Grace, Blessed, and D.J.S. Over the years, a substantial body of work was produced in our city, but those recordings are in danger of being lost forever. The Louisville Story Program has been working with dozens of people in the local gospel music community to locate, digitize, and preserve hundreds of these recordings and to develop a book that documents and honors the legacies of the people and communities that produced them. For decades, the passion, hard work, and support of countless people across dozens of Black church communities in Louisville have nurtured and sustained a rich gospel music ecosystem. This music has served as a central part of people's religious practice and as an expression of Black pride, joy, affirmation, love, dignity, determination, and hope. This legacy continues to this day. With support from The Owsley Brown II Family Foundation and Owsley Brown III Philanthropic Foundation, LSP has partnered with members of the gospel community and a local advisory group of local gospel historians and luminaries:To locate, clean, and digitize gospel records of local artists released by small local labelsTo accompany the local Black gospel music community in developing a 4 CD box set that includes a 200+ page hardcover book with first-person documentation of their rich historyTo create an accompanying double LP featuring 26 of those songsTo create and maintain a public-facing digital archive of 1, 000 songs and 1, 000 photographsTo celebrate the final release with a large concert at the Brown Theatre (September 28, 2024)

Light in the Attic Records proudly presents Even the Forest Hums: Ukrainian Sonic Archives 1971-1996-the first comprehensive collection of Ukrainian music recorded prior to, and immediately following, the USSR's collapse. From subtly dissenting Soviet-era singles to DIY recordings from Kyiv's vibrant underground scene, the compilation chronicles the development of Ukraine's rich musical landscape through rare folk, rock, jazz, and electronic recordings."This record is a labor of love and a long time coming," says label owner Matt Sullivan. Over the course of the last five years, Sullivan, alongside producers David Mas ("DBGO"), Mark "Frosty" McNeill, and Ukrainian label Shukai Records worked tirelessly to compile a carefully curated, chronological playlist. But behind the scenes, ongoing war & politics would shape the evolution of the tracklist, which originally featured both Ukrainian and Russian artists. "We found ourselves in the midst of a larger political issue; what began as a broader overview of a sonically underrepresented region suddenly became quite the controversial project," Sullivan continues, "so we decided to pivot and focus only on Ukrainian music. There were times when it felt impossible to bring this project to fruition, so to be sharing it with the world today is truly humbling and long overdue."Guiding listeners through the physical editions of the album are insightful liner notes and track-by-track details by Vitalii "Bard" Bardetskyi-a Kyiv-based filmmaker, DJ, and writer. The 2xLP is housed in a beautiful gatefold package showcasing Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko's beloved and iconic folk paintings. The vinyl edition features a 20-page booklet with artist photos & liner notes in both English and Ukrainian, pressed on Clear Blue Sky & Sunflower Yellow wax; the CD edition features bonus content housed in a deluxe, 64-page hardbound book.Light in the Attic will donate a portion of proceeds directly to Livyj Bereh, a Kyiv-based volunteer group working to rebuild in the regions affected by ongoing war in Ukraine."Music has always pulled Ukrainians out of the abyss," writes Vitalii "Bard" Bardetskyi in his liner notes for Even the Forest Hums: Ukrainian Sonic Archives 1971-1996. "When there is no hope for the future, there is still music. At such moments, the whole nation resonates under a groove. Music, breaking through the concrete of various colonial systems, is an incredible, often illogical, way to preserve dignity."While the songs collected in Even the Forest Hums were recorded during periods of immense societal and political upheaval-and certainly reflect the resilience of the Ukrainian people-they are rooted in the universal spirit of exploration: from post-war teenagers seeking fresh rhythms and artists experimenting with DIY recording technologies to an entire nation being introduced to decades-worth of previously-embargoed albums. Yet, until now, it has been nearly impossible for anyone outside Ukraine to explore the country's flourishing music scene for themselves.Much of this can be attributed to Soviet-era restrictions. Music, much like any other commodity, was tightly controlled before the fall of communism. "Only state-authorized performers who had gone through hellish rounds of the permit system could record at the few monopolistic, state-run studios," explains Bardetskyi. While many of these compositions were released and performed to mass audiences, however, they weren't necessarily what they seemed. "Some of the artists managed, even under difficult ideological circumstances, to build a whole aesthetic platform which was essentially anti-Soviet."Bands could slide under the radar by changing the lyrics of rock songs to reflect Soviet ideals or by performing traditional folk music with subtle outside influences. "This resulted in a whole scene that combined central-eastern Ukrainian vocal polyphony, Carpathian rhythms, and overseas grooves," writes Bardetskyi, who refers to this era of music as "Mustache Funk."Examples featured in Even the Forest Hums... include 1971's "Bunny" by Kobza. While the folk-rock group was known for their polyphonic vocals, this particular composition is an instrumental waltz, which blends elements of traditional Ukrainian music with progressive rock, British beat, and jazz-rock. Another example of "Mustache Funk" comes from the latter half of the decade, with the Caribbean-influenced "Remembrance" by Vodohrai. While the group-which included some of the best jazz musicians in the country-had a multitude of traditional hits, inspired jams like this one could, for a lucky few, occasionally be heard live. While the 70s proved to be a golden age for Ukrainian music (complete with pop stars, large-scale tours, and legions of adoring fans), the excitement was short-lived. "The Soviet system finally understood that funkified beats quite strongly contradict[ed] [it's] principles," notes Bardetskyi, who adds that by the 80s, "The once prolific scene was almost completely colonized, appropriated, and largely Russified; the state radio and TV waves were occupied by banal VIAs and cheezy schlager singers."With tighter restrictions, however, came the rise of the underground. While the decade leading up to Ukraine's independence was marked by great turmoil-including the political reform of Perestroika in the USSR and the Chernobyl disaster-it also marked a time of incredible creativity.Mirroring global trends, the first half of the decade found many composers and producers experimenting with electronic music. Among them was Vadym Khrapachov, whose scores have appeared in over 100 films. His moody, Moroder-esque "Dance" (written for Roman Balaian's iconic 1983 film, Flights in Dreams and Reality) is notable in that it was recorded on the USSR's only existing British EMS Synthi 100 synthesizer.Producer Kyrylo Stetsenko, meanwhile, was reimagining traditional songs for the dancefloor. Among them is 1980's "Play, the Violin, Play," by Ukrainian pop star Tetiana Kocherhina. Stetsenko, who produced the album for Kocherhina, created a hypnotic remix of the folk tune that was fit for a disco. Stetsenko is also featured here with 1987's "Oh, how, how?," in which he transforms a melancholic ballad by Natalia Gura into a synth-forward, breakbeat jam.As the fall of communism approached, the scene continued to diversify-particularly as music from around the world became increasingly available. Kyiv, in particular, became an epicenter of creativity. In the early days, bands like Krok offered a preview of what was to come. Described by Bardetskyi as "The first real Kyiv supergroup," Krok was led by guitarist Volodymyr Khodzytskyi and featured musicians from local Beat bands. In addition to backing the biggest pop acts of the day, the versatile collective explored a spectrum of styles in their own recordings, including fusion and electro-funk. They are represented here with the mellow "Breath of Night Kyiv."By the late 80s, Kyiv "was buzzing like a beehive," recalls Bardetskyi. "It was a period of very active socialization and exchange of musical information and ideas; local musicians evolved with supersonic speed, absorbing decades of the world's musical background and transforming it into their sound." While rock bands comprised much of this era's first wave, artists continued to expand their repertoire as new influences pervaded the scene. The global rise of DIY recording technology and electronic instrumentation, meanwhile, also contributed to the growing sonic landscape.Highlights from this period include the avant-garde improvisations of violinist Valentina Goncharova. Recordings like 1989's "Silence" were created by a series of layered tracks and custom pickups. Similarly, composer Iury Lech paints a warm ambient soundscape with 1990's "Barreras." On the other end of the spectrum is the industrial "90" by Radiodelo (the project of Ivan Moskalenko-a

Vinyl LP pressing. This LP, the first volume in the series, features part of the 17th National Tour of Jazz at The Philharmonic, a series of concerts initiated by the legendary impresario Norman Granz. Norman Granz was an American jazz record producer and concert promoter who constantly faced down the authorities across the USA by insisting on staging racially integrated shows, preferring to cancel concerts to his own financial loss rather than have his artists play to segregated audiences. A phenomenal Swing Set concert featuring a Septet comprising Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Flip Phillips (saxophone), Illinois Jacquet (saxophone), Oscar Peterson (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), Jo Hones (drums). Encapsulates the spirit and essence of post-war modern jazz, and we are delighted to offer over different volumes, the opportunity to hear so many of the best artists of the genre performing together on the same bill with such obvious freedom and elan. A show like this would be good way of demonstrating to the uninitiated what jazz is all about. This release comes from the archives of the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Federation which are lodged with the Archive of Recorded Sound at Stanford University in California. The archive comprises a collection of jazz recordings amassed during the 1950s and 1960s by broadcaster Ken Ackerman, and widely known as the Ackerman Tapes.

Double vinyl LP pressing. 2020 release. With a landmark 50th anniversary album, 2018's Soul Side of Town, still visible in their rearview mirror, one would think Tower of Power, the much-lauded creators of their own horn-based, hybrid brand of East Bay soul/funk/R&B/rock, would take a well-deserved breather. But that is not in the band's DNA, nor that of it's founder and ringmaster, tenor saxophonist and bandleader Emilio Castillo. Now, with Step Up, the band forges on into the next decade of the 21st century reinvigorated with the addition of new talent, most notably the phenomenal young lead vocalist, Marcus Scott. Marcus replaced TOP's longtime lead singer, Ray Greene, who makes his final appearance with the band on Step Up. Also taking his bows on the new album is 30-year TOP veteran bassist Francis 'Rocco' Prestia, who is stepping back from life on the road and whose driving fingerstyle funk is ably replaced on tour by Marc Van Wageningen. From the band's debut up to Step Up, the TOP sound remains true to Emilio's original musical vision: reach inside the deep, multidimensional well of what is broadly called soul music and bring together all it's diverse components in a singular, emotional sound.

Estrela Mágica is a starcrossed collaboration between Samira Winter (Winter) and Glenn Brigman (Triptides). Sighting influences from Brazil’s colorful Tropicalia movement as well as the phased out sunshine psychedelia of the American 1960’s, Winter and Triptides started blending together their favorite musical colors into a brand new sonic palette. Two years and a dozen home recording sessions later, they had crafted enough material to form Estrela Mágica.

Since the late '80s, Mudhoney – the Seattle-based foursome whose muck-crusted version of rock, shot through with caustic wit and battened down by a ferocious low end – has been a high-pH tonic against the ludicrous and the insipid. Thirty years later, the world is experiencing a particularly high-water moment for both those ideals. But just in time, vocalist Mark Arm, guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Guy Maddison, and drummer Dan Peters are back with Digital Garbage, a barbed-wire-trimmed collection of sonic brickbats. Arm's raw yawp and his bandmates' long-honed chemistry make Digital Garbage an ideal release valve for the 2018 pressure cooker. "My sense of humor is dark, and these are dark times," says Arm. "I suppose it’s only getting darker." Digital Garbage opens with the swaggering "Nerve Attack," which can be heard as a nod both to modern-life anxiety and the ever-increasing threat of warfare. The album's title comes from the outro of "Kill Yourself Live," which segues from a revved-up Arm organ solo into a bleak look at the way notoriety goes viral. Arm says: "people really seem to find validation in the likes—and then there's Facebook Live, where people have streamed torture and murder, or, in the case of Philando Castile, getting murdered by a cop. In the course of writing that song, I thought about how, once you put something out there online, you can’t wipe it away. It’s always going to be there—even if no one digs it up, it’s still out there floating somewhere." Appropriately enough, bits of recent news events float through the record: “Please Mr. Gunman," on which Arm bellows "We'd rather die in church!" over his bandmates' careening charge, was inspired by a TV-news bubblehead's response to a 2017 church shooting, while the ominous refrain that opens the submerged-blues of "Next Mass Extinction" calls back to last summer's clashes in Charlottesville. Mudhoney's core sound—steadily pounding drums, swamp-thing bass, squalling guitar wobble, Arm's hazardous-chemical voice—remains on Digital Garbage, which the band recorded with longtime collaborator (and Digital Garbage pianist) Johnny Sangster at the Seattle studio Litho. The anti-religiosity shimmy "21st Century Pharisees" builds its case with Maddison's woozy synths, which Arm says “add a really nice touch to the proceedings.” Digital Garbage closes with "Oh Yeah," a brief celebration of skateboarding, surfing, biking, and the joy provided by these escape valves. "I would’ve really just loved to write songs about just hanging out on the beach, and going on a nice vacation," says Arm. "But, you know, that probably doesn’t make for great rock." Mudhoney, however, know what does make great rock—and the riffs and fury of Digital Garbage will stand the test of time, even if the particulars fade away. "I've tried to keep things somewhat universal, so that this album doesn’t just seem like of this time—hopefully some of this stuff will go away," Arm laughs. "You don’t want to say in the future, 'Hey, those lyrics are still relevant. Great!'”

“The Lamb was written during a time of intense paranoia after a home invasion, deaths of loved ones and general violence around me and my friends,” says Lillie West, the Chicago-based songwriter behind Lala Lala. “I began to frequently and vividly imagine the end of the world, eventually becoming too frightened to leave my house. This led me to spend a lot of time examining my relationships and the choices I’d made, often wondering if they were correct and/or kind.” West initially started Lala Lala as a way to communicate things that she felt she could never say out loud. But on The Lamb, her sophomore LP and debut for Hardly Art, she has found strength in vulnerability. Through bracing hooks and sharp lyrics, the 24-year-old songwriter and guitarist illustrates a nuanced look on her own adulthood -- her fraught insecurity, struggles with addiction, and the loss of several people close to her. Across the album’s 12 tracks, West carefully examines the skeletons in her closet for the first time, hoping to capture honest snapshots of her past selves. Many of the songs show West asking herself agonizing questions about her life with a clever and hopeful curiosity. On the album’s first single and opening track, “Destroyer,” she reflects on feeling self-destructive and the delayed realization something in the past has irrevocably hurt you. In “Water Over Sex,” West laments her old precarious lifestyle, while trying to readjust to her newfound sobriety, and ”Copycat” confronts her feelings of alienation and boredom. “Some of this album is about being frustrated that everything is always repeating itself and being bored with your own feelings,” she explains. “‘Copycat’ in particular is about how everyone talks exactly the same on the Internet and how it sometimes feels futile to try and be yourself.”

Limited yellow vinyl LP pressing in gatefold jacket. Archive release. Before Drive-By Truckers, Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood formed Adam's House Cat in the Muscles Shoals-area of Alabama in 1985. Their songs and friendship was the foundation on which DBT was built. This lost album recorded in 1990 has never before been released. It was remixed by Dave Barbe and mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound. While Cooley and Hood may have founded Drive-By Truckers in 1996, the two musicians had in fact first come together more than a decade prior. They met on August 1, 1985, the day Hood moved into a dank basement apartment in North Florence, AL shared by Cooley. The two young musicians took notice of each other's guitars and became fast friends, drinking cheap beer and singing songs together on the flat's shabby couch.

Vinyl LP pressing. In 1971 several dozen African American soul, jazz, and gospel artists embarked on a journey that would change the lives of everyone involved. They traveled from New York City to Ghana, West Africa to take part in a 13-hour concert entitled Soul to Soul. The concert was a celebration of 14 years of Ghana's independence from British rule. For most of these artists it was their first trip to Africa. For the African American musicians, this was a journey about personal roots, the ancestral homeland, history, discovery, loss, pain and joy. Directed by Academy Award? winner Denis Sanders, the concert film/documentary had a limited theatrical run in 1971. It now returns restored with the original edit reconstructing each scene using high quality 2K transfers from the original film elements, which were shot in the 4:3 aspect ratio. The soundtrack has been digitally remastered. Soul to Soul is an electrifying concert film that features it's players at the peak of their powers. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue deliver fiery renditions of "River Deep-Mountain High," "Soul to Soul," a cut specifically written for this concert; and Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long" [appears as a special Blu-ray outtake]. Wilson Pickett, the most popular American artist known to West Africans at the time, delivers a rousing finale of "In the Midnight Hour," "Funky Broadway," and "Land of a 1000 Dances." Gospel/Soul family group the Staples Singers were on hand to perform "When Will Be We Paid" and "Are You Sure. Les McCann and Eddie Harris introduced many to jazz via spirited performances of "The Price You Gotta Pay to Be Free" and "Hey Jorler," the latter featuring local Ghanaian artist Amoah Azangeo. Santana, with guest percussionist Willie Bobo was the wild card. The group only had one African American member but given it's reliance on Afro-Cuban and Latin American rhythm constructs played the most African-sounding music of any with "Black Magic Woman"/"Gypsy Queen" and "Jungle Strut".
