It's an unpretentious album, with Rubel putting himself, his musicianship and his songwriting upfront and centre. The epic 'O Velho e o Mar' delicately layers acoustic guitar, banjo and vocal harmonies, as the track builds with a simmering intensity and an accordion drifts in across it's final stages. Elsewhere, title track 'Pearl' has a global singer-songwriter aesthetic and could be Thom Yorke at his most acoustic. At nearly seven minutes, 'Quando Bate Aquela Saudade' is an unlikely breakthrough single, but it's message really resonated with the Brazilian / Portuguese-speaking audience. Anyone who has witnessed Rubel live has felt the energy and interplay between musician and audience, with the crowd making this song as much their own as it is Rubel's. A true modern-day classic.'Ben' echoes and channels the Brazilian greats; Caetano Veloso comes to mind whilst listening to this stripped-down tender ballad. The folk-leaning tones of the banjo make a return on the closing 'Quadro Verde'. In the past ten years, Conor Murphy the person and Smidley the band have come to exist beyond the mere creative overflow left unexplored in his work with Foxing. Through his own growth in and out of Smidley, though, art and life itself have entered into an ongoing cycle of redefinition. This redefinition isn't a destination, but a new pathway paved by Murphy's gratitude for and security in the artist, husband, and man that he's become. Smidley's third album, Murphy Horse, soundtracks this journey. Though doubt remains a recurring obstacle for Murphy, each Smidley song brings him back home to love. The doubt present in the dramatic, sparsely percussive opener "Corpse Flower," melts away by the first hook of the quirky-yet-danceable "Capstone," just before a breathy feature from Grammy award-winning artist Lucy Dacus culminates in the duo proclaiming, "All this loving you has been the capstone of my life." Murphy chides himself for being too career-driven and fantasizing about freedom from such earthly woes over a bittersweet melody on the album's title track, his spiral repeatedly interrupted by his wife yelling "Hey!" throughout the song. The explosive and vibrant "Love In Every Direction," sees Murphy lamenting this single-mindedness in the face of all he truly has over an effortlessly danceable indie pop composition that feels destined to create a series of massively emotional festival performances. All over Murphy Horse are recurring performances tinged with shoegaze, tropicalia, and 80's rock influence that see Smidley extending beyond his earlier closely-sung, indie folk style. Murphy leans much more into Smidley as an ensemble. Though not a debut by any means, to Murphy, Murphy Horse certainly feels like one. The confusion and doubt are no longer debilitating because Murphy has the support he spent his whole life seeking. Everything and everyone can be repurposed.

The final album is both a love letter to early 80s New York and a tribute to the late, great Dave Ball. Electronic music legends Soft Cell, aka singer and frontman Marc Almond and multi-instrumentalist and producer Dave Ball, are set to release 'Danceteria', their sixth and final studio album. 'Danceteria' the album is a big, classy and playful farewell to 47 years of Marc and Dave making music as Soft Cell and features career-defining performances from our electronic pop legends. Reminiscent of Sparks and Pet Shop Boys and with lyrics Lady Gaga would kill for, the album takes you on a vivid journey through a day in early 80s New York, bouncing round the clock from night to bleary daybreak and headlong back into the club. Marc provides an initial snapshot into the album: "Danceteria is a love letter to New York in the early 80's. The time we spent in New York - where we recorded our first 3 albums - shaped us both as artists and people. To celebrate this period is a fitting farewell to Dave Ball and the final Soft Cell studio album." 'Danceteria' is equally a tribute to the late, great Dave Ball. The final album is one of the last bodies of work Ball co-wrote and produced before his sad, untimely passing on the 22nd of October 2025. Almond led the obituaries, describing Dave as a "brilliant musical genius". The world's media followed, hailing him as an electronic music pioneer, plus music stars including Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe from the Pet Shop Boys, Mute Records' Daniel Miller, Cabaret Voltaire and Richard Norris from Dave's techno duo The Grid contributing an outpouring of elegiac praise. Dave finished 'Danceteria' two days before he passed away, and it is in full tribute to him that the album release went ahead as planned. It is also because of Dave's passing that 'Danceteria' simply has to be the last Soft Cell album, as Marc explains: 'There can be no more recordings of Soft Cell without Dave, it would not be possible. The sad reality is that Dave Ball was half of Soft Cell, and live work aside, I can't write Soft Cell songs without him."

Butler says it's the first time the band had a proper, top-to-bottom studio experience, which meant no cutting corners, and an ability to chase a previously-unattainable level of Polish. Tyler Povanda (Save Face) and Kory Gregory (Prince Daddy & the Hyena) contributed vocals to the record.The music on Sweet Tooth marked a departure for Butler from his usual writing style. "I fell in love with bands like Modern Baseball and Front Bottoms and Joyce Manor, so I wanted to write songs like that," says Butler. For The Bites, the past few years have seemed like a lifetime. After their debut album cracked the Top 40 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, paving the way for multiple world tours and introducing them to legions of music fans longing to celebrate the rich and colorful tapestry that is rock and roll, the results have been, quite literally, life changing.
“When we were only playing shows on the Sunset Strip, it was like we were looking at the world through a paper towel roll,” says drummer Mark Hylander, referencing the band’s Los Angeles origin story. “It seems like we’ve lived about a hundred different lifetimes since we wrote and recorded that first album. It’s like we are looking at the world with both eyes now, not just one. The blinders are off and we can see all around us.”
Their forthcoming sophomore release – aptly-titled The Bites – demonstrates their evolution. It is a bold step into the beyond, and is self-titled because it is exactly how the band want to be seen and heard in 2026. Look no further than lead single “Aftertaste,” a modern rock explosion that flips the thrill of the chase upside down and leaves us turned around. It’s something we’ve all experienced.
The bright lights of home have been dimmed, and The Bites now speak a universal language. The writing process was a journey of discovery - nothing was off limits, and no inspiration was left unturned. If their debut album was about the Squeeze, The Bites will leave us all enjoying the juice.
“This is who we are,” says vocalist Jordan Tyler. “We can’t wait for people to join us on the ride!”
