Politics. Hatred. Endless war. We doomscroll as our rights are stripped away. Bombings. Kidnappings. Mass shootings. The nightly news is a litany of brutality. Assassination. Subjugation. Deportation. We argue with each other while the rich get richer and cruelty is normalized. These are just a few of the reasons why the title of The Casualties’ new album is Detonate.
Detonate is the second chapter in a new epoch for The Casualties. As their second album with David Rodriguez at the mic, it solidifies the vocalist’s partnership with drummer Marc “Meggers” Eggers and guitarist Jake Kolatis. “It’s like a new era for the band,” Meggers says. “It solidifies that Dave is here to stay.”
As the follow-up to 2018’s Written in Blood and their first record for Hellcat Records—the Epitaph subsidiary curated by Tim Armstrong of Rancid—Detonate sees this new version of The Casualties locking into place. “We were in the studio for Written in Blood about eight months after I joined,” Rodriguez says. “With this new record, we really grew together. For me, it’s the proud moment where we clicked the three Legos together.”

Available for the album's 20th anniversary, Cat Power's 'The Greatest' on pink vinyl with a limited reprinting of the original pink foil cover. For 'The Greatest,' Chan Marshall returned to Memphis, pursuing the slinky Hi Records sound of the 70s, famed for it's sensuous feel and beguiling rhythms. She got Al Green's guitarist and songwriting partner Mabon "Teenie" Hodges ("Love and Happiness" and "Take Me to the River") to play guitar on the whole album. With Teenie came his Hi Rhythm bandmate (and brother) Leroy "Flick" Hodges, who plays on half of the album (Memphis A-team bassist Dave Smith supplements). Anchoring the band is Steve Potts (Booker T. and the MG). Other top Memphis musicians guest on keyboards, horns and strings. Cat Power went right to the sources, and created her own paean to the songs and styles she grew up on.'The Greatest' adds to Cat Power's singular sound all the elements that make an Al Green record great: Memphis horns, funky string arrangements, smooth background vocals. "Lived in Bars" is a hypnotic song that seems to start in the middle of the night and flow backward like water upstream to the source of a good time. Many songs hearken back to earlier in Cat Power's career, like the surface simplicity of "Willie"-much more complicated upon deeper listen-and like "Where Is My Love," which sounds like it could be the first song she ever wrote, and also the one to which she has always aspired. "Living Proof," on the other hand, has an almost gospel-like swing that stands in contrast to the quieter songs. The ethereal title track is the missing link between Big Star '3rd' and the 21st century.

The funkiest band you’ve never heard! For their newest Top Shelf release, the groove purveyors of Jazz Dispensary dig into the vaults of Muse Records for a reissue of Catalyst’s 1973 jazz-funk sizzler, Perception. Returning to vinyl for the first time in over 50 years, the album is a showcase of the band’s effortless mastery in dancing between soul jazz and moody fusion. Cut from the original tapes (AAA) by Kevin Gray, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a tip-on jacket.

Los Angeles musician Cate Kennan's self produced second full length unfolds with the poetry and immateriality of it's title: Shadows. Ten vignettes of keys, strings, reverb, and voice, the songs sway and lope between dream and lullaby, rose-colored but remote. The album was inspired by the dislocation Kennan felt upon returning, after several years away, to the rustic neighborhood northwest of L.A. where she'd grown up: "Wandering through a place where my life once existed but where everything had quietly shifted with time."The music conjures a mood of distance, dust, and dazed emotion, alternately lulling and unraveling. From shuffling tumbleweed vignettes ("The Lone West," "Romantic Strings") to sepia-tone torch songs ("Shadows," "Reverie") to oblique keyboard meditations ("Moonlight," "Rain"), Kennan's soundworld moves with a muted, murky beauty, like alluring shapes seen through smudged glass. In her hands, haze is a transformative property, liberating melody and memory into landscapes still untraveled: "What began as a period of nostalgia for me turned into a longing, not for the past, for a place that might exist somewhere beyond the horizon."

Its creation led by pure emotion, Cate Le Bon's seventh record Michelangelo Dying usurped the album she thought she was making. The product of all- consuming heartache, her feelings overrode her reluctance to write an album about love, and in the process became a kind of exorcism. What emerges is a wonderfully iridescent attempt to photograph a wound before it closes up but which in doing so, picks at it too.
Musically, there is a continuation and expansion of a sound a machine with a heart that has taken shape over her last two records (2019's Reward and 2022's Pompeii) as Le Bon has increasingly taken control of the playing and producing herself. As guitars and saxophones are pushed through pedals and percussion and voices are fed through filters, an iridescent, green and silky sound emerges, with flashes of the artistic singularities of David Bowie, Nico, John McGeoch and Laurie Anderson surfacing and disappearing below the waterline throughout.
What were left with is an ever-changing, continuous entity, a kind of song cycle. Each iteration reflects and progresses the last, each one a shard of the same broken mirror shifting, glinting, concealing and revealing, depending on how it is turned in the light. There are ultimately, Cate asserts, "No revelations. No conclusions. There is no reason. There is repetition and chaos. I eventually allowed myself a vacant mind to experience it without resistance and without searching for a revelation or order to any of it."
An exercise in the viscerality of life, of love, of humanity for both listener and artist, Michelangelo Dying knows what it is to hold, to be held, and to be exquisitely, profoundly alone. "The characters are interchangeable" concludes Cate, "but at the end of it all, its me meeting myself."

CM Ultra is the latest electric, high energy synth pop offering from LA based artist Catherine Moan. With five years passing since her first full length record (also released on Born Losers Records out of Philadelphia), Catherine Moan's unique blend of 80s new wave, 00s synth pop, and contemporary electronic dance music has entered a new dimension, with both production and songwriting vastly outclassing her debut. While oftentimes appearing to be a collection of lighthearted pop numbers on the surface, a closer listen reveals lyrical reactions to media driven psychological attacks, political campaigns against queer people in America, and her struggle to navigate life in that world. A deeply personal album through the lens of optimistic instrumentation and rhythms, CM Ultra certainly proves to be worth the wait.

Expressing what cannot be expressed, what is sometimes beyond understanding, is a task that has challenged composers of sacred music for centuries. In his latest collection of vocal and choral works, award-winning Canadian composer Christopher Tyler Nickel aims to articulate these complex emotional states. The works range from Stabat Mater, an intimate portrayal of a mother's grief poignantly sung by soprano Catherine Redding; a collection of motets, both a cappella and accompanied, including the wonders expressed in a new setting of the O Magnum Mysterium; a meditative setting of the de Profundis; and an uplifting Magnificat. Chorus master Kari Turunen and the Vancouver Chamber Choir join forces with Clyde Mitchell and the Vancouver Contemporary Orchestra in performances that capture by turns the works' peace, grief, hope and transcendence through Nickel's very personal and spiritual musical language. The duo of Catherine Sikora and Finola Merivale brings together saxophone with field recordings and electronics in a fluid, exploratory dialogue. Sikora's incisive, texturally rich playing unfolds against Merivale's carefully shaped sonic environments, where found sounds and subtle processing create shifting atmospheres. Their collaboration emphasizes deep listening and spontaneous interaction, blurring the line between instrumental gesture and environmental sound. The result is an intimate, immersive music that moves between stark minimalism and dense, evocative layers.
