Cannonball's Sharpshooters, originally released in 1958, documents alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley leading a quintet featuring cornetist Nat Adderley, pianist Junior Mance, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Recorded on March 4 and 6, 1958, at Bell Sound in New York City, the session captures the group just days before Adderley's recording session for Somethin' Else with Miles Davis, placing the album at a pivotal moment in his late-1950s trajectory. The ensemble presents a compact hard-bop program reflecting Adderley's blues-inflected phrasing alongside the harmonic language of modern bebop. The repertoire balances standards, bop vehicles, and originals, including Tadd Dameron's "Our Delight" and Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser." Adderley's trademark exuberance while leading an all-star lineup of 1950s jazz defines the character of this session. The Verve Vault series is always mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

In 1991, four kids from the suburbs of Chicago, IL formed Cap'n Jazz, arguably one of the most influential rock bands of the last 30 years. Those kids, brothers Tim & Mike Kinsella, Victor Villarreal, and Sam Zurick, were joined by Davey von Bohlen in 1994 and recorded their only full-length album before calling it quits - Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards in the Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped on, and Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over - often referred to as Shmap'n Shmazz. Originally released on the Man With Gun label, the album quickly fell out of print after the band's breakup, with the songs eventually making their way to the Analphabetapolothology compilation, released in 1998 via Jade Tree Records.
As a testament to this legendary debut, Polyvinyl is thrilled to announce the vinyl reissue of Shmap'n Shmazz, which has been remastered from the original tapes - restoring the original album on vinyl for the first time since 1995, including it's original artwork. With the unmatched intensity heard in the opening track, "Little League," coupled with eccentrically poetic lyrics, this iconic album has influenced countless artists since it's release and unintentionally sparked a new genre. Pitchfork calls the album "a touchstone of Midwestern emo," while Vulture placed "Little League" at #3 on their 100 Greatest Emo Songs of All Time list. Musician Devendra Banhart has also expressed his love for the band in a 2017 Joan of Arc documentary, describing Tim's powerfully striking vocals like "going to the zoo on quaaludes, but all the other animals are on speed."

The Cappella musicale di Santa Maria in Campitelli, conducted by Maestro Vincenzo Di Betta, who has already been responsible for significant recording revivals such as Orazio Benevoli's "Missa in angustia pestilentiæ" (TC600201), Bonaventura Rubino's "Messa de' Morti" (TC601803), and Francesco Giovannini's "Messa a Quattro" (TC700703), is now engaged in this new and notably interesting musical production. This rediscovery focuses on two sacred oratorios from the seventeenth century by two authors active in the Neapolitan orbit: Francesco Nicolo de Rossi, a priest of Apulian origin, and Cristoforo Caresana, of Venetian origin and formerly the organist of St. Mark's Basilica. The two works - performed with the ensemble's customary expertise - are interspersed with an instrumental battle piece by Andrea Falconieri, composed in the spirit of that Baroque theatricality which is the main ingredient of these works and of the sacred musical masterpieces of the seventeenth century. The first studio album from Car Seat Headrest in five years, 'The Scholars.' From Shakespeare to Mozart to classical opera, Car Seat Headrest's Will Toledo pulled from the classics when devising the lyrics and story arc of 'The Scholars,' while the music draws, carefully, from classic rock story song cycles such as The Who's 'Tommy' and David Bowie's 'Ziggy Stardust.' "One thing that can be a struggle with rock operas is that the individual songs kind of get sacrificed for the flow of the plot," Toledo notes. "I didn't want to sacrifice that to make a very fluid narrative. And so this is sort of a middle ground where each song can be a character and it's like each one is coming out on center stage and they have their song and dance." While Car Seat Headrest started as Toledo's solo project, the four-piece is now fully a band. "What we've been doing more of in recent years is just taking the pulses of each other." says Toledo. "It didn't really feel to me like things got in sync in an inner feeling way until this record, with that internal communal energy. And it's become that band feeling for me in a much more realized way. That's been a big journey." Will Toledo always knew he would return to Twin Fantasy. He never did complete the work. Not really. Never could square his grand ambitions against his mechanical limitations. Listen to his first attempt, recorded at nineteen on a cheap laptop, and you’ll hear what Brian Eno fondly calls “the sound of failure” - thrilling, extraordinary, and singularly compelling failure. Will’s first love, rendered in the vivid teenage viscera of stolen gin, bruised shins, and weird sex, was an event too momentous for the medium assigned to record it.Early next year, on the heels of the smashing success of Teens of Denial, Car Seat Headrest will release a new version of Twin Fantasy. “It was never a finished work,” Will says, “and it wasn’t until last year that I figured out how to finish it.” He has, now, the benefit of a bigger budget, a full band in fine form, and endless time to tinker. According to him, it took eight months of mixing just to get the drums right. But this is no shallow second take, sanitized in studio and scrubbed of feeling. This is the album he always wanted to make. It sounds the way he always wanted it to sound.It’s been hard, stepping into the shoes of his teenage self, walking back to painful places. There are lyrics he wouldn’t write again, an especially sad song he regards as an albatross. But even as he carries the weight of that younger, wounded Will, he moves forward. He grows. He revises, gently, the songs we love so much. In the album’s final moments, in those apologies to future me’s and you’s, there is more forgiveness than fury.This, Will says, is the most vital difference between the old and the new: he no longer sees his own story as a tragedy.
