This duet date from 1990 demonstrates the deep blues feeling and technical mastery Archie Shepp has on the tenor saxophone. Comprised of four standards - 'Things Ain't What They Used to Be,' 'Body and Soul,' 'Pannonica,' and 'Round Midnight' - this set is one of Shepp's most enjoyable ever. The reasons are myriad, but it is in large part due to the fluid, loping bass of Richard Davis. Recorded in a club in front of a live audience, Shepp digs deep into his own history of influential tenor players and comes out not wanting, but on par with them, from Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis to Sonny Rollins to John Coltrane. His playing here is big, meaty, and warm, full of subtle emotions as well as bleating cries. Davis' sense of time and melody is nearly incredible on the title track and on 'Round Midnight.' The interplay Shepp shares with him is tasty, coming from fragmentary elements in Monk's changes; Shepp and Davis move around the lyric and cut to the heart of the tune's color and ambiguity. It's a haunting version and one that offers a completely different reading of the tune over 17 minutes. On 'Pannonica,' Shepp's blues feeling comes out of Ben Webster as well as Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis and his soloing is full of warmth, humor, and a ragged sort of elegance. Mal Waldron's first tribute to Billie Holiday, titled Left Alone, was recorded in 1959, mere months before the singer's death. He returned to salute the legendary vocalist on several occasions since then, with this recording likely being his final tribute, recorded less than a year before his own death. Waldron, who worked with Holiday during her last years, is intimately familiar with her takes of the six standards heard on this disc, along with her own 'Lady Sings the Blues.' Archie Shepp's often gritty tenor sax is reminiscent of the texture of Holiday's voice, yet he perfectly complements Waldron's lush piano. They also pack a punch with their stark performance of 'Left Alone' (Shepp's occasional reed squeaks seem deliberate, as if to imitate breaks in her voice). Waldron also recites Holiday's lyrics set to his composition at the conclusion of the LP. Shepp switches to soprano sax for an emotional take of 'Everything Happens to Me' and 'I Only Have Eyes for You,' with the latter song sounding as if the unheard singer is being ignored by her love interest. Shepp's 'Blues for 52nd Street' is both sassy and swinging. This instrumental salute to Billie Holiday is one of the best albums ever to honour her memory.

They brought in a new production accomplice, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), for some of the recording. He generously hosted and produced tracks with them at his Joshua Tree studio. Then they rejoined forces with James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco), producer of the previous two Arctic Monkeys and Last Shadow Puppets albums, in Brooklyn, NY to complete the tracks that became Humbug. Vinyl LP pressing. 2018 release. Arctic Monkeys return with the album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. Produced by James Ford and Alex Turner, the album was recorded in Los Angeles, Paris and London. Many of the songs featured on Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino were written by Alex Turner at a Steinway Vertegrand piano gifted to him as a birthday present. The album is the long awaited follow-up to the band's 2013 album AM. Arctic Monkeys formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner (lead vocals, rhythm/lead guitar), Matt Helders (drums, vocals), Jamie Cook (lead/rhythm guitar) and Nick O'Malley (bass, backing vocals). The band has won seven Brit Awards - winning both Best British Group and Best British Album three times, and have been nominated for three Grammy Awards. Blazing out of high school obscurity to the top of the charts, The Arctic Monkeys built a huge internet following before releasing their first full-length album in 2006. "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I Am Not" was a huge hit, topping the charts in the U.K. and climbing up to #24 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. It won the Mercury Music Prize and had hits with "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the Sun Goes Down." After releasing their early EPs, My Angel (1991) and Constellation (1994), Norwegian avant-garde metal pioneers Arcturus unveiled their debut full-length album, Aspera Hiems Symfonia, in 1996. The band, named after the brightest star in the Northern Hemisphere, emerged from Norway's explosive black metal scene but quickly set themselves apart with their bold, experimental vision. The lineup for Aspera Hiems Symfonia featured prominent figures from the Norwegian extreme metal underground, including Garm (vocals, also of Ulver), Hellhammer (drums, known from Mayhem), and new additions Carl August Tidemann (guitar) and Hugh "Skoll" Mingay (bass, also of Ulver), replacing Samoth from the earlier EPs. This talented ensemble blended the raw intensity of black metal with progressive and avant-garde elements, creating a sound that was both haunting and innovative.Aspera Hiems Symfonia stands out for it's daring departure from traditional black metal. Piercing vocal shrieks coexist with eerie, operatic melodies, while Sverd's cinematic keyboards weave atmospheric tapestries. Tidemann's technical guitar solos add a layer of sophistication, and the rhythm section, driven by Hellhammer's relentless precision and Skoll's dynamic basslines, provides a solid yet adventurous foundation. This fusion of aggressive roots with progressive experimentation-marked by unconventional song structures and a theatrical flair-established Arcturus as trailblazers in the Oslo metal scene and beyond, cementing their legacy as progressive innovators.
