Melaina Kol, the alias of Nashville-based musician Logan Hornyak, is an ever-changing project. It's unrecognisable now from what it was in 2018, for example, when he put out the lo-fi twee-pop record Bird Kill Worm, and it's progressed too from the folktronica songs on 2021's AMOSAT. Hornyak doesn't like to get stuck on one thing; every album should be different from the last. "I like to get on motifs or ideas, like a theme, and I like to change the way that I record every single time," he says. For his new record, Okay that's a great idea because if I do that then, Hornyak decided to lean away from guitar and electronics almost altogether. Instead, he taught himself cello and harp and returned to his childhood piano training. He wanted to fuse his long-time enjoyment of classical music with his interest in ambient and house music, the idea being to create an album that took the approach of electronic music using organic sounds. Classical instruments are chopped, looped and layered around a rhythmic pulse. The effect can be disorienting and uncentering, but disarmingly beautiful at the same time.Hornyak recorded the album between home in Tennessee and a nearby studio. It was his first time getting to use a real studio for Melaina Kol songs, and he wanted the sound to be high-fidelity and stripped of effects. "I basically was like, I don't even want reverb on anything, I just want it to sound like you're in the room listening to it," he says. He paid deeper attention to his performances than he ever had before, focusing on the "micro-details" of each instrumental part before weaving them together.For all his restless creative energy, Okay that's a great idea because if I do that then represents Hornyak in a more settled stage of life. "It's a lot calmer than the last two albums. I did all those albums in my early 20s, when I was going through manic episodes and getting into drugs and stuff," he says. "But I would say this album is kinda like the other end of that - the coming out of that, I would say. In my life, I feel a lot more at peace, and I feel like the album translates that." "In October 1977, the Cramps ventured into Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee with producer and Cramps translator extraordinaire, Alex Chilton. The band had planned on recording their song 'TV Set,' as an A side, along with another track or tracks. Mr. Chilton told them the way he liked to work was to have a band record a lot of songs and from that they would pick the best of the bunch. Luckily for Cramps fans everywhere, the band did just that. The first evidence of these sessions was unleashed upon an "unsuspecting human world" in April 1978 on the band's own Vengeance Records label. It was a two song 7-inch with a version of the Trashmen's 1963 classic 'Surfin' Bird,' pushed well beyond it's breaking point, forcing it to mutate into a much higher form of lowdown, and Jack Scott's 1959 cool burning 'The Way I Walk,' dragged back into the Stone Age... After one listen, it was clear the Cramps had absolutely tapped into Rock 'n' Roll's mainline. In November of the same year, and again from the October 1977 sessions came another two song lesson in how it's done, or undone, with easily one of the greatest A sides of all time: 'Human Fly.' The B side was held hostage by "Domino," originally sung by Roy Orbison. The Cramps' version swaggers with infinite confidence and is an absolute thrill to listen to. In the summer of 1979, young degenerates in England were treated to a 12-inch by the Cramps called Gravest Hits, which featured not only the aforementioned four tracks, but also a fifth, again from the October 1977 sessions... "What happened to the rest of the tracks from those auspicious days in October 1977? In 2026, Larry Hardy, owner and operator of In The Red Records, repelled down, deep into the vast, sunless vault of the Cramps tape collection, and resurfaced hours later, disoriented and out of breath, but overjoyed with what he'd returned to topside with: six 1/4" reels of tracks, mixed by Lux [Interior] and [Poison] Ivy... Fueled by rage, introspection and a musical progression that could be seen as a blueprint for what wouldlater become known as post-hardcore, this album ticks every box you want from a record of the era: intense, emotive, scathing, unpredictable, all topped off by the masterful production of Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü/Sugar).Give Thanks is perhaps overlooked in many top ten of the genre, but leaving the band's debut LP off that list would be a mistake. A demonstration in raw emotion and political angst, Give Thanks harnesses a sound that could have only happened during the Reaganera. Hardcore was of course a musical explosion built upon aggression and discontent, yet Give Thanks forcefully fuses this concept of raw power with a multitude of musical influences at a time when some of their contemporaries perhaps seemed to tread water. Whilst the principles and sonics harnessed on AOF's debut album may have had more in common with the sounds coming out of Washington D.C., this record has an authentic Chicago savvy running through it, effortlessly projecting a street level tone whilst simultaneously aiming to show the possibilities of what a hardcore record could be.In retrospect, AOF's debut was a hardcore album ahead of it's time, perhaps the reason it's fervent themes and artistry still feel so fresh and relevant. Whether that's due to Vic Bondi's gravelly tones geared to critique the societal regime at play, or the considered guitar work aimed to both blast and texturize, or the intense drums rhythms inspired by jazz and dub, there is a depth to the final album that feels like a band testing their parameters, one listen to 'Every Man For Himself' and you know you are listening to something special. Familiarity and originality rarely crossover, but in this case, they coexist to leave us with a forward-thinking punk record that is more interested in shouting it's emotions from the street, than it is screaming into a vacuum. A true American hardcore record, and a must for fans of Minor Threat, Dead Kennedy's, Bad Brains and Fugazi. Delbert McClinton has performed on Austin City Limits 7 times. This 1982 performance is considered one of his more legendary performances. You can call Delbert's music "Texas roadhouse blues" if you want to, but you might as well give up trying to pin a label on this guy. He was born in Lubbock, but you'd never know it from the sound of that growling, gravelly, funky voice. Maybe growing up in Fort Worth explains the difference, since he developed his R&B chops early-on playing in the house band at Jack's Place, a notorious, rough-and-rowdy late-night joint. That's where they shared the stage with the likes of legends Bobby Blue Bland and the infamous Jimmy Reed, Delbert's main man. Less Louder' is the fourth studio album from Geelong / Melbourne, Australia band Beans, fronted by The Murlocs drummer Matt Blach. Written and recorded around the time as its predecessor 'Boots N Cats' (2024), this is that album’s more mellow and laid-back counterpart. Where the first of the two records that Blach set to work on in his DIY garage studio over the pandemic was a drum-driven set of rhythmic garage-psych grooves, 'Less Louder' is a blissed-out, harmony-driven record firmly in the “Sunday Afternoon” category, as Blach puts it. Drifting through psychedelic pop, surf and doo-wop influences, 'Less Louder' is all breezy, deeply-infectious melody and hazy jangle – foregrounding softer, more acoustic production, more piano and Rhodes, whilst dialling down the distortion and the lysergic psych wig-outs you might expect from a Beans record. "We went a lot more folky and chill on ‘lockdown sessions 2’", Blach recalls: "Although Less Louder was recorded around the same time as Boots N Cats, as the title intentionally describes, it's a lot more laid-back in comparison. We're pleased to share some different paths and a new intimacy so to speak. There's a change in feel to these songs, with more mellow tones. Lyrically, the songs are based around the time they were written. Some about love, some about loneliness, some about memories, some about sleeping or hiding away." Like ‘Boots N Cats’, 'Less Louder' was written over that surreal extended limbo period and self-recorded at Blach's home in back in 2021: "It kept me sane and feeling productive to still be writing/recording and achieving something, having that opportunity and time and space really got my tires turning." However, where the first of the two found Blach playing all instruments himself, the full Beans line-up are back in tow here: Blach on songwriting and much of the vocals / guitar / drums duties, whilst backed up by bandmates Jack Kong on guitar, Mitch Rice on keys, Vincent Clementson on bass and Lachie McKiernan on drums. Left undisturbed for a few years, the second and final set of Beans recordings from that era is finally seeing the light of day now, landing mixed by Jesse Williams and mastered by John Lee.
