Lillie West has always made her music in response to an itch to always be moving. But, as she recently experienced a burgeoning desire to settle down, she realized that steadiness can beget creativity. That evolution is what fuels much of her new album as Lala Lala, Heaven 2. For many years, West lived in Chicago, where she established Lala Lala as part of that city's indie scene, releasing several records on the Sub Pop imprint Hardly Art. Those albums, The Lamb and I Want the Door to Open, were powerful statements from a curious artist: catchy guitar-pop songs about being stuck in the ups and downs of life, the struggle to stay sober, to leave town, to blow up your life. West left Chicago to search for more and, in the process, wrote her new album, Heaven 2. On her journey, she landed in New Mexico, where she lived off the grid in Taos. "It was very challenging, freezing, infested with poisonous animals. But it's still the most beautiful and magical place I've ever been and I dream about it all the time," West says. She then made her way to Iceland, where she lived for two years on and off, with the off being in London, where she grew up. Eventually, she made her way to Reykjavik and settled in with the music community and released an instrumental album (If I Were A Real Man I Would Be Able To Break The Neck Of A Suffering Bird) before heading to Los Angeles, where she has fallen in love and found herself settled. L.A. has been a good place to live, if for no other reason than, in West's words, "wherever you go, there you are. I wish there was a cooler way to say that." Fortunately, there are: This theme of finding beauty and fulfillment wherever one can permeates Heaven 2. On "Even Mountains Erode," West sings, "There are symbols and signs, you're missing your life." West encourages herself, and us, to slow down. To stop and smell the flowers. West produced the album with Jay Som's Melina Duterte, who provides a strong punchiness as a bed for West's warm, rounded vocals. The relationship between the two of them was telepathic, and the result is a bold and confident album. Duterte and West performed almost all of the album's instruments, with a few crucial guests, like Sen Morimoto on saxophone on the opening track, "Car Anymore," and a bridge written by Porches' Aaron Maine on the title track, "Heaven 2." Catharsis is not only about the pain, but the escape that happens when you free yourself of it. And so there are moments of bold joy on the album, too. "Arrow," which samples the French electro pop band La Femme, moves fast, and it's swiftness and pleasure feel like running towards something, not away. "None of this was supposed to happen," West sings. But it did. "It's such a basic spiritual thing," West says, "Resistance is the root of all suffering, and I thought I could dictate the course of my life." Of course, like everyone else, she could not. Wherever you go, there you are.

To hear Kurt Wagner tell it, Punching the Clown - the seventeenth album by beloved shapeshifting Nashville institution Lambchop, out August 21, 2026 on Merge Records and City Slang - began as a ghost hunt. After hearing a song on the radio while driving one night - "a minimal single chord strummed banjo and a small group of voices" - he went looking for it and failed. In his pursuit, he discovered "lined-out singing, " a form of acapella call-and-response gospel singing that began in Scotland in the 1800s and became a root of American gospel and country music when Scottish immigrants settled in Appalachia. The song, typically a hymn, is led by a clerk, who begins the verse alone before a choir swells up to accompany them on the rest of the line. Lined-out singing was born out of necessity - not every member of a given congregation could read, so the clerk's voice spurred the choir's memory of what came next in the hymn - but it's effect is profound: a haunting, elegiac means of interpretation in which you can hear not only the words and what they mean, but what those words meant to each person singing them. a spontaneous call and response type of acapella singing led by a clerk with a chorus of singers revealing the raw beauty and power of the human voice with it's unique varieties it's unadorned simplicity gave weight to the words as they were sung. i wanted to make a record that emulated this kind of music.Wagner says that doing so required him to become a better songwriter. The process was a crucible. Working again with guitarist Andrew Broder, Wagner went back to writing songs the way he did when he started out, with guitar and voice, studying songs and songwriters, "allowing their madness, pain, and truth to become mine." Of the dozens of songs Wagner and Broder wrote, 30 were considered, and 12 became Punching the Clown. The voice lining out those songs, unmistakably, is Wagner's. Responding to his call: Broder (guitar), Justin Vernon (banjo), an Eau Claire-based choir put together by Blake Morgan, The Bible producer Ryan Olson (Poliça, Gayngs), and engineer Mark Nevers (Silver Jews, Bill Callahan, Bonnie "Prince" Billy), recording and mixing his first Lambchop album since 2012's Mr. M. However the notion of Wagner needing to become a "better" songwriter strikes longtime Lambchop fans, his striving has yielded an album of disarming humanity. It's graceful, generous, sometimes wry and sometimes heartbreaking, unblinkingly idiosyncratic yet precise as cut glass. How else can one describe Punching the Clown, beyond Wagner's own exegesis? It's the darndest thing.

In 2016 she endured a horrible breakup, and then her mother was in a car accident that left her paralyzed.Though Lakis was already singing in a band at the time, these life-altering events motivated her to focus on writing and recording her own music. "When you're in a place of total surrender, you are able to get out of your own way and finally do the thing you want to do, " she says.After the car accident, Lakis's mother's health deteriorated, and Deadlights was recorded over the last year of life, with Lakis frequently travelling back to Baltimore to care for her. Lee is a gifted musician hailing from Clewiston, Florida, who first gained prominence in the 1990s as part of the hip-hop duo Straight Coffee For George with friend Antonio "T-Lyfe" Humphrey. He later formed The Square Egg, known for blending hip-hop, funk, jazz, and soul, earning recognition in Miami and New York. As a solo artist, Lee played renowned venues in New York and Buenos Aires, releasing albums like "Naked" (2010), "Reasons To Buy This Album" (2014), and "2+2=5" (2017). His 2022 album, "Maybe Now," was a lush musical journey influenced by his life in Argentina. His latest release, "The Reprieve," is his most ambitious to date - featuring a dizzying array of world-class musicians, performing majestic arrangements of Lee's unique, heartfelt compositions. One of the most beautifully arranged pieces from The Reprieve is the apocalyptic love song "Still" - that first captures the ear with it's lush, intoxicating rhythm, while delivering an underlying sentiment of love in the ruins, and love's ultimate survival. It's hard to believe that a legend like Lenny Kaye has never released a solo album before. However, after writing songs and slinging guitar with his musical partner Patti Smith for over half a century, building the canon of multiple musical eras through his Nuggets compilations, producing award-winning albums from Suzanne Vega, Kristen Hersh, Soul Asylum and more, it's safe to say he's been busy adding his own flourishes to others' records and spreading the gospel of garage rock and psychedelic history. At age 79, Lenny is finally ready to release his debut solo album Goin' Local. There are also a couple of notable guests on the record. Patti Smith is the featured vocalist on "Solstice." "Let's Make a Memory" features jazz pianist Matthew Shipp. "Pennsylvania Girls" features Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth on violin. David Mansfield provided a string arrangement on the final track, "Yes I Will." Lenny handles everything else on guitar and pedal steel, accompanied by a couple of local rhythm sections.
