Julia Holter always knew that there were many forms her song “Materia” could take. The tune’s dynamic Hildegard von Bingen-inspired melody and dense modal chords stood on their own without a complex arrangement on her wondrous 2024 album Something in the Room She Moves, but she felt a lingering desire to expand the texture and stretch out the harmony.But on the new Materia, a kind of companion LP to Something, Holter has realized not one but two distinct versions of the song. “Materia 2” is a hallucinatory dream of drum machines, fretless bass, and clarinet, Holter’s voice spiraling through ether alongside that of Jessika Kenney. And on “Materia 3,” intended as a hidden bonus track in an homage to the CD era of her youth, Holter literally slows down the take from Something. The change not only emphasizes the unpredictable glory of the harmonies within but also reiterates the song’s emotional sophistication, the sense that it’s about learning how to live.Materia is only seven tracks long, but Holter works in nearly that many modes here. There are two astounding improvisations, one where she builds a one-person ensemble of drum machines and synth lines and another where she manipulates her voice until each word seems to contain another symphony. And yet another is built from a riff that came from a demo for Something, a demo that itself is one of Materia’s most spellbinding and emotional pieces, “My Twin.” These seven songs show that Holter is among her generation’s most fluid writers of art-pop, moving among ideas and idioms with true exploratory aplomb. It was a difficult time for me when I started working on this album. I had just uprooted myself from the city apartment building where I'd been living for twenty years to a house in a more rural town two hours away where I knew no one when one of my best friends died ("Ashes"), and then my dog died ("Constant Companion"), then my mother was diagnosed with esophagus cancer ("Scratchers"). I was pretty depressed for a solid year ("Long Slow Nervous Breakdown") and lost and very lonely ("Harmonizing With Myself"). I was thinking about fate and circumstance and about how I'd ended up where I was ("Where Are You Now"). However much or hard I try, it seems, I've never had much control over much in my life. I should say here that my mother's younger brother was struck and killed by lighting at the age of 16 and when I asked her how this affected her worldview, she told me that it made her believe that there is a predetermined plan for each of us.With this album I was contemplating these ideas-fate, powerlessness ("Popsicle"), the effects of trauma ("Wouldn't Change Anything," "Fall Apart"," Strong Too Long"), the ways we can't and don't change.I hold on to humility and gratitude (most of the time) rather than (constant) bitterness, and I have hope, mostly in the form of the music that I make, even if it's subject matter is sometimes kind of grim. This practice of putting songs together has always sustained me and given my life-as uncontrollable as it feels- meaning and purpose, even in the darkest times. "Lighting Might Strike" is largely about that; the music itself is pulling me out of a big hole ("All I've Got") in real time, in the time it took me to make the album.Chris Anzalone played and recorded all the drums from Arlington, Massachusetts. Ed Valauskas played and recorded most of the bass from Cambridge, MA. I did the bass on a few songs, plus all the guitars, keyboards, vocals, and percussion, in my house ("My House Is Not My Dream House") in western MA. The talented Pat DiCenso then mixed and mastered it all. After all those years tinkering and refining their sound, julie's forthcoming debut album is the work of people who have become steeped in alternative music's history, learned how it works within their own musical sensibilities, and now use it to warp conventions and turn tropes on their head. Additionally, with each member of the band a multidisciplinary artist - Pourzand does sculpture work and Brady writes and paints, while Lee is also a painter as well as illustrator - the band deliberates and conceives every element of their releases, not just the music but the art and packaging, all the way down to what instruments they play onstage. On it, the band combines the riff-lust of their early days with the creativity of the new four-piece constellation. And can happily report: The fun of music is back for good. The spectrum ranges from the cheeky slacker rock of "Stick It" to the droning juggernaut of "K.A.D.A.V.A.R." and the thrash metal club (!) "Total Annihilation". Kadavar have probably never sounded more diverse and at the same time more archetypal. But that's the way it is when every band member contributes songs and ideas on an equal footing. At the end of the day, whether you call it hard rock, retro rock, classic rock, vintage rock, doom rock or just goddamn rock music, it doesn't matter: it rocks. And how. "K.A.D.A.V.A.R." sounds familiar and new at the same time, paying tribute to yesterday without being stuck in it.
