When Josefine entered her second half-century in 2021 (sometimes it's permissible to mention the age of a lady...), Norrbotten Big Band decided to celebrate her achievements by commissioning six big band pieces from composers who, at different times and on different occasions, have been connected with Josefine. We are very happy with the result and confident that the sometimes challenging nature of the music will create a portrait of Josefine with all her magnificence on full display. As a poet and musician, Joy Harjo channels a creative force she describes as a "vibration of love" to connect countless traditions and artforms, countering the despair and heartache caused by power and hate. Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace, her debut for Smithsonian Folkways, draws on the long-intertwined rhythms of jazz and poetry, the power of improvisation and self-expression through sound, and the vitality of Native culture and spirituality to spark a chain of vibrational energy to engulf the whole world. Harjo's voice is bold and direct, supported producer and bass player esperanza spalding, covering a repertoire that includes a jazz standard, a song written by Harjo's mother and uncovered by her sister, and many originals that speak to contemporary issues and her life as one of the most celebrated American poets of the last century.

Mana is the International Anthem debut by trombonist and composer Kalia Vandever. The collection carries the spirit of their first solo album, We Fell In Turn, while entering a new landscape of spacious songwriting. Mana, which in Hawaiian means "foundational, supernatural, or divine power and strength," reveals more of their voice and words, drawing from yearning, loss, and bewilderment. Vandever's music has quickly and widely gained traction in the last few years despite the fact that their style has been consistently difficult to pin down, boasting a compositional scope ranging from the palatial modern jazz of their quartet work to the synthetic, gauze-like droning ambience of their solo material. Mana leans into the expansion of the latter: solo trombone filtered through a well-dialed pedalboard, manipulated live; spare piano à la the late-career work of Ryuichi Sakamoto; electroacoustic interplay simultaneously echoing and transforming the long-note melodicism of Vandever's melancholic brass work; head-on, unambiguous, and deeply personal lyricism-a particularly fresh move for the composer... Appropriate for the early riser's first step into the day or the night owl's weary and quiet walk home.

Marcos Valle -"Samba '68 (Verve Vault Series)" [180g Heavy Vinyl LP] Samba '68, released on Verve, introduced Brazilian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marcos Valle to a wider international audience. Already established in Brazil through songs such as "Samba de Verao" ("Summer Samba"), Valle worked here with producer Creed Taylor on a recording that pairs Brazilian rhythmic forms with contemporary American studio orchestration. The sessions include vocals by Anamaria Valle and arrangements by Eumir Deodato. The repertoire features English-language versions of compositions co-written by Valle, including "So Nice (Summer Samba)," "Chup Chup, I Got Away," and "Safely In Your Arms," alongside additional material that reflects his economical writing and feather-light rhythmic approach. The album documents a meeting point between Brazilian popular music and international pop-jazz studio practice at the end of the 1960s. The Verve Vault series is always mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. Towa Bird returns with her sophomore album Gentleman - 11 songs that navigate the tension between masculine and feminine archetypes, delivered with undeniable confidence and swagger from one of music's most promising voices. Featuring the singles "Dirty Habit" and "Dog," with contributions from Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna, Gentleman sharpens Towa's guitar-driven rush into a world of queer romance and self-assured style - equal parts charm, humor, vulnerability, and bite. A master of lyrical expression and harmonic elegance, Kenny Barron has long been regarded as one of jazz's most distinguished pianists. Born in Philadelphia in 1943, Barron's journey through the jazz world reads like a tour of it's greatest innovators: early work with James Moody, Roy Haynes, and a formative tenure in Dizzy Gillespie's quintet set the stage for a career defined by sophistication, depth, and unmistakable melodic clarity. Through the 1960s and '70s, Barron became a sought-after collaborator, performing with Freddie Hubbard, Jimmy Owens, Yusef Lateef, Milt Jackson, Jimmy Heath, and Stan Getz. His role in the celebrated ensemble Sphere, alongside Buster Williams, Ben Riley, and Charlie Rouse, further cemented his reputation as a musician equally rooted in bebop tradition and forward-looking modernism. Recorded in October 1984, Landscape captures Barron at a moment of profound artistic maturity. Joined by Cecil McBee on bass and Al Foster on drums, this intimate trio session reveals the full breadth of Barron's expressive range. The album includes the traditional "Hush-A-Bye", "Spring Is Here" and two Kenny Barron originals "Calypso" and "Sunset". Landscape by the Kenny Barron Trio is a 40th anniversary edition, contains newly written liner-notes by Timeless Jazz fou (more)

When Producer Nils Winther heard for the first time Kevin Hays at Ron McClure1990 session for SCCD 31279 "Never Forget", he knew immediately he found an exceptional talent. Hays cut his first leader album for the label three months after the McClure date at the age of 22.His second leader album Ugly Beauty (originally released in 1992) returns here in a stunning 24bit/96kHz remaster as G1297, reaffirming it's place as a landmark in the pianist's early career. Recorded with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Williams, the album marked Hays's first trio outing-an ensemble format that would become central to his artistic identity. The program blends jazz standards with Hays's original The Well, showcasing his lyrical touch, harmonic depth, and rhythmic drive. The session captures Hays's youthful brilliance while foreshadowing the maturity and originality that define his later work. More than three decades on, Ugly Beauty remains fresh, vital, and deeply engaging-a timeless document of three master musicians in inspired dialogue."Hays' development will be interesting to watch... Trumpeter Kris Tiner and pianist Cathlene Pineda have been playing music together for well over a decade, initially in the context of Pineda's quartet with three albums previously released on Orenda Records. Their deep friendship and intuitive musical connection led them quite naturally to the duo format, and in recent concert appearances they have explored original compositions, improvisations, and insightful arrangements of American jazz and folk song repertoire.Sung is the definitive statement of their duo music to date. It features mostly original compositions - four by Pineda and three by Tiner - with influences ranging from Ellington to Chopin, from Stravinsky to Kenny Wheeler. The first side of the LP closes with a heartfelt interpretation of "Silence", a composition by their mutual mentor Charlie Haden. The album was recorded in Los Angeles in a single session by expert engineer Talley Sherwood. Sung is available on Orenda Records on all digital platforms and in a limited vinyl edition that includes liner notes by Josh Haden.

Time ebbs and flows. Something we cannot control, although we wish we could...Laufey’s third album...A Matter Of Time...is finally here.A Matter of Time is a beautiful masterpiece of introspection about the anguish that comes with life and love. Laufey has captivated a generation with virtuosic songs of love and self-discovery by manifesting her vision of jazz and classical-infused pop music. But after becoming the youngest ever recipient of the GRAMMY for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album (for Bewitched), the Icelandic-Chinese composer, singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist feels freer than ever to, as she puts it, “let my heart wander.” For her third album, A Matter of Time, Laufey teams with fellow producers Spencer Stewart and Aaron Dessner to break the set of expectations she herself set, serving up a transcendent sound and honest writing that cuts to the heart. It’s the culmination of an incredible journey that began with her playing cello with the Iceland Symphony as a teen before writing her first charting single while studying at Berklee College of Music.Laufey’s many achievements have since grown to include 4.25 billion global streams, a social media audience of 23 million, the biggest jazz LP debut in Spotify history, an album in Billboard’s Top 20, a pile of Platinum plaques, a Forbes 30 Under 30 designation, and, in 2025, being named one of TIME’s Women of the Year. International dance music heavyweight, producer, and DJ Alexander Lay-Far returns with a powerful new chapter, Lay-Far Dance Orchestra (LFDO), a fully-fledged live band project that reconnects him with his jazz-funk and fusion DNA while pushing dance music forward with unmistakable groove, musicianship, and emotional weight. Formed in early 2024, LFDO is no nostalgia exercise. With Lay-Far at the helm as bassist, bandleader, composer, arranger, and sound engineer, the orchestra has already been turning heads with explosive live performances, reinventing classic Lay-Far cuts, and now unveil their first album 'Skybreak' with all new and original material written and produced by Lay-Far together with his bandmates and star guests, including Lipelis, Antoha MC, and Seven Davis Jr. This work shows the departure from the predominantly electronic sound of Lay-Far's previous solo albums in favor of live instrumentation recorded to analog tape and effortlessly bridging the gap between jazz, library music, disco-funk, house, broken beat, and drum'n'bass. 'Skybreak' is dynamic, passionate, spiritual, cinematic, playful, heartfelt, life-affirming, dreamy, and deeply romantic. Ultimately, there's something profoundly romantic in recording and releasing such music in this day and age!'Take Flight (Part 1)' opens the album with style. It takes us on a beautifully orchestrated journey, blending the sensuality of Library Music with high-octane Jazz-Funk and raw b-boy breaks, propelled by breathtaking flute and Rhodes solos of Timur Nekrasov and Maxim Glonti. This aural symbiosis of 'beauty and the beats' will become more and more prominent as the album unfolds. It's time for 'Aquarius Love' created with the inimitable artist and vocalist Seven Davis Jr. (Secret Angels, Ninja Tune). In this composition cinematic soul and heavy jazz meet the restless energy of live drum & bass with deep and heartfelt vocals - timeless sound combined with a timeless message about love and life!Next is 'Head In The Clouds' - a theme for an imaginary rom-com, an ode to all the dreamers - sweet, light, naive and heartwarming. Space-Disco-Funk at it's best! 'Where You From' is a fiery Soulful House number with heavy Afro-Latin influences recorded in collaboration with Lipelis. It's full of Sun, joy and passion. It's irresistible rhythm is emphasized by funky octave bass, wah-wah guitar, catchy piano riffs, guitar solo by Lipelis and seemingly light conscious message delivered by Lay-Far and Maryag. Summer is here! Now the album takes an unexpected twist in the form of 'The Harp of Boom' which at first glance appears to be a classic-sounding Boom-Bap banger. Yes, It's loud, raw, and gritty, yet it gradually evolves into something delicately-touching and deeply-soulful thanks to a memorable flute melody and lush string arrangement. Definitely recorded with tongue in cheek. Next is 'Feel The Moment' a remarkable collaboration with one of the most recognizable and distinctive Russian artists, singer, trumpeter and cultural icon Antoha MC. It's a feel-good song, hopeful, life-affirming and bittersweet. A stylish excursion into Brit-Funk and Soviet Jazz-Fusion sound, drawing inspiration from the likes of Atmosfear, Light Of The World, or Soviet Jazz bands like Allegro and Arsenal, but reimagining the influences through the modern West London broken beat lens. The spectacular music journey continuous with 'Take Flight (Part 2)' - it's all about the deep infectious jazz-funk groove, heavy beats, rolling percussion and the glory of the soloing instruments - saxophone and flute by Timur Nekrasov, demonstrating the wide range of emotions from thoughtful and lyrical to restless and borderline vicious. One for freestyle dancing! As the album draws to an end a vibrant musical triptych 'Soul Constant' awaits, mixing together the deep and sensual mood of spiritual jazz with heavy syncopated drum'n'bass rhythms by Michail Fotchenkov, lush orchestration, expressive saxophone solos and the ending which can simply be described as 'aural bliss'. It's breath-taking! A pleasant bonus is the exclusive version of 'Where You From' by Lipelis himself, who is taking it into dub territories, further enhancing the rhythm section and enriching the song with his trademark playful synth flourishes and dreamy guitar solos for maximum effect (and appeal). Recorded and released in 1958, just over a year before his death, Laughin' to Keep from Cryin' captures saxophonist Lester Young in one of his final studio sessions. Though his tone had softened, Young's phrasing remains fluid and expressive, favoring subtlety over force. Produced by Norman Granz, the date brings together Roy Eldridge and Harry ""Sweets"" Edison on trumpet, whose contrasting styles (fiery drive and relaxed, bluesy restraint) create a compelling musical contrast. Backed by Hank Jones (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), George Duvivier (bass), and Mickey Sheen (drums), the session blends small-group swing with a polished studio feel. Highlights include ""They Can't Take That Away from Me"" and ""Salute to Benny,"" a tribute to Benny Goodman, who gave Young his first clarinet. Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes remastered on 180g vinyl.
