Named endearingly after their late maternal grandfather, Dana and Alden’s new album Papa’s Boat is imbued with their Papa’s wanderlust spirit as it musically traverses the places he traveled and memorializes moments from his life. Recorded across London, New York and Brazil, the duo infused various soundscapes of their travels into an eclectic musical concoction, drawing elements from indie rock, samba, bossa nova, jazz, rap and pop. Featured artists include Marcos Valle, Mei Semones and more.

On October 15th and 16th, 2020, drummer Daniel Villarreal was joined by guitarist Je? Parker and bassist Anna Butterss for two afternoons of recording in the backyard of Chicali Outpost in Los Angeles. For all three musicians, it was the first ensemble recording session they'd done in-person since the pandemic locked the world down just seven months prior. Some choice moments from these sessions made it onto Villarreal's critically-acclaimed 2022 album Panamá 77, but most of the music remained unreleased. Lados B is a deep dive into the high-level spontaneous music made by Villarreal, Parker, and Butterss across those two days in 2020. Villarreal is heard leading the group through various rhythmic modes and structures for improvisation - flow as informed by the Latin funk of Fania Records as it is by the otherworldly humanity trance of Brain Records - while Parker and Butterss draw on their extensive experience playing free together (as heard on their ETA IVtet LPs) to build harmonic buoys for their spontaneous melodicism. The result is a beautifully vivid illustration of context, creativity, and collective composition from a particularly rich moment in history.

(2-LP set) Many critics regard Dave Brubeck's Carnegie Hall concert from February 1963 as his greatest ever live appearance. But who can really determine that? For no one - apart from Brubeck himself - would have seen and heard his conservatively estimated 12,000 concerts. Although the twelve titles had already been released on LPs that had been recorded in the studio, these records were certainly not known to all those in the audience. In between the numbers on each LP, Brubeck made little 'advertising spots' in short comments, but with such charm and wit that one really cannot be angry with him.The concert programme begins with ""St. Louis Blues"" and ends with ""Take Five"". Luckily, the solos are distributed among all the musicians, so that Paul Desmond and Joe Morello - whose prowess on this evening can only be called 'amazingly good' - justifiably received enthusiastic applause from both the audience and us alike. ""Castilian Drums"" demonstrates Morello's wealth of ideas and his grandiose feeling for rhythm; though short, Paul Desmond's solos (""Southern Scene"" is a good example!) are compelling, highly melodic, lyrical and possess a unique tone - as such they are immediately recognisable. How fortunate that the twelve brilliantly improvised numbers are now available once again on vinyl, having been recorded live at the legendary Carnegie Hall 60 years ago.."" Buckle Up for a Thrilling Ride: Donald Fagen's Kamakiriad Peers into the Future, Marks Long- Awaited Reunion with Steely Dan Cohort Walter BeckerExperience the 1993 Concept Album in Audiophile Sound: Mobile Fidelity's UltraDisc One-Step 180g 45RPM 2LP Box Set Plays with Engrossing Definition and PresenceKamakiriad would be notable if only for the fact the album marks a full-on reunion of the two Steely Dan cohorts more than a decade after they splintered. For all the creative sparks that result from the long-awaited regrouping of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the 1993 record remains significant for many other reasons - from the hopeful narrative to the sharp playing and adventurous arrangements. Ostensibly an eight-song concept album based in the future, Kamakiriad loosely chronicles the journeys of a protagonist touring in his state-of-the-art roadster - a steam-driven Kamakiri equipped with it's own vegetable garden and radio link with a then unheard-of satellite navigation system. Imaginative, colorful, and zany, Kamakiriad demands repeat listens by always seeming to reveal something new.Sourced from the original masters, pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing, and strictly limited to 4,000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's UltraDisc One-Step 180g 45RPM 2LP box set presents Kamakiriad with expansive soundstages, deep-black backgrounds, pinpoint details, and full-range dynamics. Playing with exceptional transparency, this is the first audiophile version of Fagen's sophomore effort apart from an out-of-print DVD-A - a disc this release surpasses in all critical areas. Those include the definition and imaging that highlight the contributions of a lineup that includes a Who's Who of session players. Drop your needle on this UD1S edition and let the ride begin.Mobile Fidelity UltraDisc One-Step ProcessInstead of utilizing the industry-standard three-step lacquer process, UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) uses only one step and bypasses two processes of generational loss. In addition to revealing extra musical detail and dynamics otherwise lost due to the standard copying process, the UD1S technique produces a final LP with the lowest noise floor possible today.PCM digital master to analog console to latheNumbered Limited Edition UD1S180g 45RPM 2LP SetNUMBERED LIMITED EDITION OF 4,000

Dorothy Ashby was probably the greatest-and certainly the most swinging-jazz harpist of all time, re-purposing an instrument best known for ethereal glissandos into a fully versatile voice in combo settings, capable of providing both instrumental embroidery and rhythmic drive. But both her gender and the exoticism of her instrument often prevented her from being taken seriously among the hidebound environs of late '50s and '60s jazz. It is that very uniqueness of her sound and station in the jazz world, though, that has made her one of the most collectible musicians of her era, as her music has been sampled and celebrated by modern-day hip hop and world music artists (e.g. Jurassic Five, Bonobo) alike. In a Minor Groove is one of two albums she made in 1958 with flautist/saxophonist Frank Wess, and it is a marvel; backed by fellow Detroit native Herman Wright on bass and the great Roy Haynes on drums, she and Wess weave mesmerizing melodic threads through standards like ""Alone Together"" and ""Yesterdays."" But perhaps the most amazing track is ""Bohemia After Dark,"" which displays Ashby's uncanny ability to turn her harp into a rhythm guitar! For this reissue, we are using the original mono sources-not the rechanneled stereo and jumbled track listing that showed up on Prestige's later repackaging called Dorothy Ashby Plays for Beautiful People. Original album art with Ira Gitler's sleeve notes, too, pressed in clear with red, green, and purple swirl vinyl to match the sonic palette of this classic!

Nobody recorded as much as keyboardist/composer Doug Carn did for the Black Jazz label; his four records for the imprint are recognized as spiritual/free/soul jazz classics, Carn's 1971 debut for Black Jazz, Infant Eyes, introduced his stylistic wrinkle of adding lyrics to jazz classics like John Coltrane's "Acknowlegement (A Love Supreme)," Horace Silver's "Peace," and Wayne Shorter's title track, all sung by the gorgeous, thrilling voice of his wife Jean Carn. A crack outfit of drummer Michael Carvin, saxophonist/flautist George Harper, trombonist Al Hall, Jr., trumpeter Bob Frazier, and bassist Henry Franklin (himself leader of two treasured Black Jazz releases) backs the couple. A moving, beautiful listen that sounds ever more contemporary, now remastered, annotated, and pressed in blue with black swirl vinyl limited to 500 copies.

Toronto pianist and composer Thompson Egbo-Egbo offers a richly cinematic session on Just A Thought, built around the deep chemistry of his longtime trio with drummer Jeff Halischuk and bassist Randall Hall. Two searching originals sit alongside thoughtful reworkings of jazz repertoire spanning Kenny Garrett, Paul Simon, Bud Powell, Robert Glasper, and Astor Piazzolla, with the Odin Quartet's strings lending several tracks a warmer, more orchestral color. Lyrical, patient, and full of quiet intensity, the album moves between swinging trio interplay and lush, chamber-inflected arrangements, ideal for fans of contemporary jazz piano, cinematic instrumental music, and artists like Robert Glasper, Brad Mehldau, and Fred Hersch.

With this reflection on breathing as the most intimate human experience - one that connects people through language, movement and touch - Berlin-based jazz vocalist Esther Kaiser has dedicated her ninth album to 'Breathing'. Critics have described her as a 'voice artist','shaman of jazz', and a 'jazz poet'. Esther takes responsibility where she is. Her albums breathe and are politically and socially charged, as jazz has always been. With BREATHING, the vocalist and composer provides a glimpse into the heart of jazz. It breathes in what is, and it feels and exhales that which creates space for more understanding, tolerance, peace, and freedom. The interplay of lyrics and compositions by Esther Kaiser and pianist Alexander Wienand, alongside Kaiser's own works, interwoven with elements of spoken word, invites listeners to become part of the act of breathing itself. A sublime salute to a musical hero, expanded & remastered!""The Nat Cole vibe is one that has stayed with me from my very first introduction to his music many years ago. I've been playing his music since I was a child. I believe that anybody who has ever heard a Nat King Cole song would have to agree that he is 'unforgettable.'"" - George BensonOriginally released in 2013, Inspiration: A Tribute To Nat King Cole was praised by critics and embraced by fans of Benson and Cole alike. With special guests Wynton Marsalis, Idina Menzel, and German jazz icon Till Brönner and arrangements by the legendary Nelson Riddle (Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald) and Randy Waldman (Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson), George Benson 'finds plenty of magic in these Cole classics' according to USA Today.Reissued under the supervision of George Benson and the album's original producer, John Burk, Inspiration has been remastered, re-sequenced, and expanded to include three additional songs from the sessions.

Although the beautiful sound, mutual understanding and harmonic balance mostly predominate, the music of alto saxophonist Paul Desmond performing together with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan is far from what one calls 'easy listening'. The recording in the RCA Victor Studio took place over several days in 1962, and this is why different bass players and percussionists are heard - Wendell Marshall, Joe Benjamin and John Beal each take their turn on the bass, while Connie Kay and Mel Lewis change places behind the drum set. These musicians form a brilliant team, and that there is no piano is both deliberate and inevitable for Gerry Mulligan recordings of the day. By the way, the second saxophonist in "The Way You Look Tonight" is Paul Desmond - by means of over-dubbing in the middle of the stereo recording!

Giblet Gravy, released in 1968 on Verve Records, documents guitarist George Benson during his early period with the label. Produced by Esmond Edwards and featuring arrangements by Tom McIntosh, the sessions draw on a range of jazz and studio musicians, including pianist Herbie Hancock, bassists Ron Carter and Bob Cranshaw, drummer Billy Cobham, percussionist Johnny Pacheco, and baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, alongside a brass and rhythm section assembled for selected tracks. Across these varied settings, Benson's fluid articulation, blues-inflected phrasing, and rhythmic dexterity remain the music's central focus. The repertoire blends contemporary popular material, standards, and original compositions, illustrating the stylistic breadth that would inform his later crossover success while remaining grounded in the late-1960s jazz ensemble format. The Verve Vault series is always mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

In a world filled with noise and chaos, Harlan's music o?ers a restoration to peace. ""Music for Stillness"" unfolds slowly, inviting rest and quiet presence. The bansuri flute leads the sound, it's emotive, vocal-like quality weaving melody atop cello and ambient textures. Influenced by Indian classical music, Japanese environmental music, and Western ambient music, the album leaves space for the listener to choose how deeply to engage. The music o?ers a single question: What might peace sound like?

To perform in Carnegie Hall must surely be the greatest ambition of every artist, regardless of his or her style of music. But it also presents an enormous challenge, because on such an evening 'good' isn't good enough. The artist is not merely expected to perform to his or her usual high standard - the evening must be exceptional. Harry Belafonte, the charismatic and highly experienced performer, certainly managed to fulfill such expectations, as is testified to by the present double album, which has retained it's place as a bestseller at the top of the charts over many years. This performance contains three acts, as it were: Afro-American moods, Caribbean songs and excursions into music of the world. Belafonte is in top form and celebrates an exciting, sparkling festival of song, including spontaneous comic interludes, which arise from direct interaction with his enthralled and enthusiastic audience. He is brilliantly supported by Bob Corman and his 47-man orchestra, an ensemble which is reduced to a small combo when the maestro raises his husky voice. It goes without saying that all the favorites are there such as "Jamaica Farewell", "Day-O" and "Mama Look A Boo Boo", making this Carnegie Hall event one of the most mesmerizing live performances of all time, which captures the essence of the performer in his prime (All Music Guide). With this double album you too can sit in the audience and enjoy this great event.
