Key long-term collaborators and Coil's "secret third member" Danny Hyde located the original Hellraiser studio session tapes, and the bonus material recovered from them is presented here as an "expanded ritual" edition. Back in 1987, Clive Barker's supernatural body-horror classic Hellraiser hitted cinemas worldwide and introduced audiences to the demonic Cenobites. Barker was a devoted Coil fan (Peter Christopherson and John Balance), and he famously said they were the only band he'd ever heard on record whose music he'd had to take off because, in his words, "they made his bowels churn.". He initially invited them to compose the film's music, and the group began recording cues. But the producers at New World Pictures ultimately rejected the material in favor of a more traditional approach, bringing in Christopher Young, whose final score remains excellent, if less experimental. What remains from Coil is an unfinished soundtrack with surviving fragments and rough ideas, abruptly left behind mid-process, a glimpse into an alternate Hellraiser movie, one we can only fantasize into existence. Nearly 40 years later, key long-term collaborators and Coil's "secret third member" Danny Hyde located the original Hellraiser studio session tapes, and the bonus material recovered from them is presented here as an "expanded ritual" edition, reassembled into a standalone, possibly definitive and strangely beautiful nightmare suite. Like someone pulling signal from static, Cosey Mueller continues to find innovative permutations on Punk and Experimental Electronic, developing them into a distinctive style in her impressive discography - of which "Embodiment of Denial" serves as a new highpoint. An increasingly driving danceability is the backdrop for a heightened focus on Mueller's commanding voice. Ear-catching hook after hook is loaded across the album's eight tracks, while, far from the empty sloganeering parodied on "Der Politiker", she reclaims the declarative statement for the forces of good.

Craig Bratley's sophomore album, "Return To Bass", has been a long-time gestating. His debut was in 2014 and 12 years later here he is again. In that time, he's gathered a good deal of experience, released several musically varied 12-inches, as well as having Andrew Weatherall remix a few of his efforts. Bratley has spent the last few years honing his musical and technical skills which are evident on this album, as are his influences, which can be heard on his impressively consistent back catalog, include Italo-disco, British electropop, acid house, and a slowed down version of Chicago house that lends it a heroin crawl. Added to that, though, is the dub reggae sound championed by King Tubby, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, and our own Dennis Bovell, which is much in evidence on this set. It seems apposite, in the wake of the death of Sly Dunbar (and, less recently, his partner, Robbie Shakespeare) that Craig's album is now appearing, since Bratley's sound is imbued with a dub sensibility and the engine of the whole set is built around the thud that Sly & Robbie brought to their greatest productions; the song titles are clues: 'Plasticine Dub', 'Return To Bass' and 'No In Between Dub'. The strangely eastern sounding keys that announce the arrival of 'Plasticine Dub'; we were half-expecting a snake to rise out of a basket somewhere just south of the Pyramids, before Ola's elevating vocal add to the pyre. It's almost redolent of that great dub assassin, Mr. Jah Wobble, who'd be proud of this sturdy sonic edifice. 'Return To Bass' is built around a loping hip hop style beat but vulcanized by the presence of a warping TB-303 line, and aided considerably by music maven Tim Hutton on a funereally emotional trumpet. 'No In Between Dub' originally came out on Magic Feet in 2021 and utilizes the powerful voice of Amy Douglas, abstracted and delayed to perfection here. While 'Ahnedonia' with it's portentous minor chord builds, sounds like a funeral march for Darth Vader. All this comes together most powerfully on the centerpiece of the album, 'Everybody Pushing', with it's brilliant Madchester-adjacent vocal by DJ and producer Thomas Gandey. It's built around some domineering pads and enforced by a piano line. Although it clocks in around the 100 bpm, it feels much livelier than the tempo suggests, thanks to deftly programmed drums that are suitably hectic. 'S.A.W.' utilizes a classic Italo-disco bassline, girded with offbeat reggae chords and a rising TB-303 (the nearest thing this album has to a theme is the trusty Roland bassline provider). On 'Thanks For All The Fish' (appropriately named, since Bratley is a Grimsby boy), the nearest to a house-style floorfiller with it's Moroder-esque drive and gear changes, he brings a peak-hour sensibility to what is emphatically more suited to the delights of the warm-up. The album closes out with a return to the scene of it's biggest moment, with a reprise of 'Everybody Pushing', sans drums, bass, and vox, a gloriously trance-like procession to the needle run out. Suitably triumphal. UPC: 5061099141338Label: Magic FeetRelease Date: 5.22.26Format: Vinyl
Giuseppe Ielasi « unfamiliar music (Paris) » (2024)Derived from a live performance, unfamiliar music (Paris) reveals the essence of the obsessions and sonic universe of Giuseppe Ielasi, a musician whose discretion is matched only by his talent and boundless dedication to musical creation over almost 30 years. Unfamiliar music (Paris) is a remarkable manifestation of Ielasi's approach, an approach in which delicacy, sometimes nostalgia, and emotions know how, with discretion, to infuse a sound universe built around polyphony and reminiscence, around textures and motifs that intertwine, combine and drive each other with grace and inspiration._crys cole & Oren Ambarchi « Sparkling or Silent » (2024)Sparkling or Silent, by the duo composed of crys cole and Oren Ambarchi, is a moment apart in their respective artistic approaches, taking a step aside and marking a point of fixation around an electroacoustic method which, while always latent in both of their works, here asserts itself as a central compositional modality. However, the electroacoustic approach is not called upon here for it's formal reasons, or even less as an aesthetic line to follow. On the contrary, it is seen as a writing tool, open to all possible sonic possibilities, a tool that allows the artist to draw, within the sound itself, an intertwined space where reminiscences, impressions and sensations weave a narrative on the edge of the imagination and the moments experienced together, a narrative in which a complex and sensitive layer of sound is embedded, blurring the boundaries between artistic project, intimate journey and shared dreams.

On What's This? CS Cleaners deliver 11 tracks of warped, day-glow art punk that lash out at the absurdity of contemporary living. The band is influenced by NYC downtown music from CBGB's first diverse wave through no-wave's mutations and deconstructions. But while CS Cleaners might have a sound rooted in music that can be severe at times, they are by no means taking themselves seriously: What's This? is dance music first and foremost albeit a form wild enough for these extreme times. The characters portrayed on What's This? are often caught in moments of self-doubt and panic. Like the narcissist musician on advanced single "Come & Go" who is freaking out about losing the limelight. Ben Petrosor's delivers pathos within lines like, "if I swallow my pride, I'll split in two," that conveys a sympathy far an unlikable character in a relatable situation. We witness a variety of such panic attacks on What's This? They spring from the social media surveillance state, the pressures of living in an increasingly hostile city and of course from being stretched to thin.

.After Again (Remixes) is the remix album from last year's.After by CXBXT (Tujiko Noriko, Adrian Corker and George Barton). DJ Trystero (Trilogy Tapes, Felt) takes the slow drum machine jam of Toku No Minato and turns it into a pair of deep, dark techno cuts, one 'All Frills' the other stripped back with some old school Detroit drum programming. Koshiro Hino's YPY alter ego turns Yasashii Sayanora into a nearly nine-minute industrial dub, taking Corker's Bass, Barton's Thai gongs and Tujiko's voice and twisting them into strange shapes. As counterpoint London's DJ ojo (Blank Mind) makes a blissful dubbed out groove around harp glissandi from a child's toy and Barton's metallic percussion. Shojiro Nakaoka bounces stereo versions as excerpts of his longer generative code-based work The original work, released on digital art platform Objkt, takes the stems of Shakou, creating a browser based work generating endless shifting tides of black and white image and abstracted sound again with a strong dub flavor. Finally, the album ends with the only track that preserves the whole vocal performance from the original, as Tashi Wada takes Aurora Sagashi and reframes Tujiko's lilting vocals as a nocturne, rearranging and re-harmonizing the lullaby-like lines to the sway of his organ playing. The vinyl is released in an edition of 200 and comes with an insert, Design by Joji Koyama and Mastered by Stephan Mathieu for Schwebung Mastering.

Hailing from Barcelona they are an eclectic, discerning form of contemporary industrial music, deploying compulsive minimal synth and primal polyrhythms, as well as uniquely reconstrued elements of post-punk & EBM. An artistic identity that embraces influence yet eschews compromise, changing flavors, but not essence, from release to release. Their music has been shared or praised by Iggy Pop, Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey), Geoff Barrow (Portishead, Beak), among many others. This LP shows Dame Area most melodic side, bringing back experimentation to the genres of minimal synth, synthpop or EBM: subverting them from the inside, finding new ways to innovate, giving us unexpected twists along the ride. New double-LP by David Torn, his latest full-length album and first release for Kou Records. A bold new statement from one of the early architects of ambient and experimental guitar, the record reconnects with the raw electricity of Torn's formative processing-driven work while continuing to push his language forward. Built from richly processed guitar and electronics, the album unfolds as an immersive, long-form exploration of sound, balancing immediacy and abstraction, structure and spontaneit

dgoHn (pronounced "John") is the moniker of John Cunnane, who hails from Essex. 'Tessares,' his fourth album, is playful, unconventional drum & bass that contrasts sparse effects and melodic elements with complex drumfunk and breakcore. He often uses unusual time signatures and head-spinning polyrhythms inspired by jazz and math rock, sometimes within the same track. Somehow he makes it sound effortless, and occasionally pretty as well, keeping a fine balance that never feels punishing.

In Library Copy Do Not Remove, Discovery Zone'sJJ Weihl presents a digital enchantment of reality, braiding together the material and non-material toreveal that they are, in fact, two aspects of one and thesame thing. In Weihl's world, Nature and technologyare not enemies, but instead create each other in aninfinite dance of meaning and reflection.Originally created in spatial sound for the Zeiss-Groß Planetarium in Berlin, Library Copy Do NotRemove is a creation mythology for the simulateduniverse. However, this is not some dry, Bostromian, masculine fantasy of a digital reality devoid of nature'smysteries. Instead, Weihl insists that the listener allowspace for the awesome reality of the natural worldwithin the framework of a simulation. If our world issimulated, then the simulation has to be capable ofcreating the beauty and splendor of Nature. In this way,Weihl engages an ambient alchemy, calling for a grandreconciliation of Nature and the technological, whileasking us to consider how and where the experienceof transcendent human consciousness might existbetween them.Written while Weihl was simultaneously completingher sophomore album Quantum Web, the songs onLibrary Copy Do Not Remove reflect an expansive, inspirational state of both excitement and anxiety at thetask of composing music for such a unique space. Thesongs themselves were shaped through Ambisonics,a specific format of spatial audio that is directionalinstead of being channel-based (like stereo), and weretransmitted through a mosaic of 49 speakers. Becauseit was written for live performance, Library Copy DoNot Remove was never conceived as an album per se,but instead as a three-dimensional event. In this waythe sonic staging mirrored how we perceive sound inour everyday lives: surrounding us from all directions. For this album release, Weihl mixed all of the songsagain from the ground up with long time producer E/T,reimagining and reworking the constellation of tracksfor a stereo experience.Inspired by the work of James Gleick, LD Deutsch,Johannes Kepler and Jorges Luis Borges, LibraryCopy Do Not Remove explores the creative tensionbetween reality and perception, information andmythology, harmony and disorder. Throughout thealbum, Weihl asks how we as humans come tounderstand the universe around us and the underlyingcode which animates it. What emerges is a sonicmythos that tells of spiraling digital universes, eachnested within each other, in which every participatoryagent is both a part, and the whole, of reality, at once.In this way, Library Copy Do Not Remove is a cyber-expression of perennial wisdom: instead of "as above,so below," Weihl might suggest, "as with input, sowith output."
