Since forming in 2011, Gamelan Yowana Sari has been a performing Balinese Art Ensemble in residence at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, NYC. Newly recorded at the Basilica in Assisi, the birthplace of the Franciscan order, a comprehensive set of the 'Rhymed Offices' chanted by religious communities to bear witness to the miracles and virtues of St Francis and of St Antony of Padua. During the Middle Ages, the Church established the custom of chanting original poetic texts during the Hours of the Office (in particular, Vespers, Matins and Lauds). Their purpose was to construct a story which linked biblical texts, such as psalms and canticles, to the deeds and virtues of the Saints of the Church. Those Offices dedicated to St Francis of Assisi and to St Antony of Padua are attributed to Brother Julian, a musician-poet monk born in the Rhineland town of Speyer between 1175 and 1180. Most of his life was spent in Paris; he took formal Franciscan orders around 1225, and died in 1250. Saint Francis had died in October 1226. A biography was soon produced, by Tommaso of Celano, and Julian seems to have based his Offices on this text; they were widely sung in monasteries and convents across Europe from 1235 onwards. Meanwhile, the Offices dedicated to St Antony, who died in 1231 and was canonized the following year, seem to be entirely Julian's work, both text and music. Julian writes in flowing Latin iambic pentameter verse, and composes in a style increasingly detached from the formulas of Gregorian chant proper, inflected by the contemporary emergence of polyphony, exemplified by the music of Perotin in works such as Sederunt principes. The musicians and singers of the Nova Schola Gregoriana of Verona have recorded several volumes of Gregorian chant over the course of their 40-year history, while performing at major international festivals in Paris, Avignon and Cremona, and touring Japan and the United States. They also feature on Brilliant Classics albums of organ masses by Fasolo, Frescobaldi and Merulo. Their new account of these meditative Offices is impeccably authentic in style, text and origin. An illuminating juxtaposition of keyboard giants bookending the Romantic age, by a pianist with a growing international reputation. The Latvian pianist Georgijs Osokins made these recordings for Piano Classics between 2016 and 2018, and they attracted an enthusiastic critical response on their first issue. In Gramophone, Jeremy Nicholas welcomed a 'powerful and cleanly articulated reading' of Rachmaninoff's Variations on a Theme of Chopin, while the paired transcriptions 'provide further evidence of Osokins's stylistic identification with Rachmaninoff's idiom.'The Chopin album was made shortly after Osokins placed himself among the medal winners at the 2015 Chopin competition in Warsaw, where he divided opinion with interpretations which many found radical. Yet the coherence of his thinking is powerfully evident from the sequence which charts the 'late' thinking and keyboard writing of Chopin, as it ventures into poetic territories hitherto unexplored even by him, from the Third Piano Sonata through to the visionary Polonaise-Fantaisie. These are works that will perennially challenge and reward the most adventurous minds and musicians in any generation, and with this album Osokins placed himself among their number. In the following decade, Osokins has gone on to win first prize at the 2018 Manhattan International Music Competition in New York, and make an acclaimed debut at the Salzburg Festival, as well as several other recordings. He has also become the youngest-ever recipient of the Latvian Grand Music Award, the highest honour in the Latvian music industry. Heinrich Schutz (1585-1672), often regarded as the most important German composer before J.S. Bach, stands as a central figure in the early Baroque. His music blends the expressive intensity of the new Italian style -absorbed during his studies with Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice-with the rigorous counterpoint and textual clarity favored in Protestant Germany. Schutz devoted much of his long career to sacred music, serving as Kapellmeister in Dresden and producing works that profoundly shaped the development of German liturgical composition.Among his most significant contributions are his Passions. Today, three authenticated Passions by Schutz survive: the St. Matthew Passion (1666), the St. Luke Passion (1665), and the St. John Passion (1664). While no St. Mark Passion by Schutz has survived, the existing three form a coherent and deeply expressive trilogy.Schutz's Passions are notable for their austere, devotional character. Unlike later Baroque Passion settings, they contain no instrumental accompaniment beyond the continuo pitch support used for recitative; instead, Schutz employs unaccompanied choral textures to emphasize the solemnity of the narrative. Without doubt, the German lieder tradition came to maturity during the first decades of the 19th century. Examples exist throughout the 18th century, and the general song tradition in Europe goes back many centuries earlier. But the first significant outpouring of German song emerged with Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Schumann. The album features ten works by Ciurlionis, arranged for cello and piano by Lithuanian cellist Juozas Celkauskas. Child's Play is a double album of chamber music by Australian composer Carl Vine, one of the most approachable and prolific composers of our day. Vine's output embraces 8 symphonies, 13 concertante works, numerous chamber works, plus music for film, television, dance and theatre. Four years ago, Gunther Groissbock, celebrated bassist at the world's most prestigious opera stages, surprised music lovers with a recording of popular Viennese songs. There was hope and expectation that a follow-up would come. Now he returns with a journey through time in the genre, from the Biedermeier period to the present day. While his 2021 album "Gemischter Satz" featured the Philharmonia Schrammeln, this time it's the Neue Wiener Concert Schrammeln who define the Viennese sound of the CD. It includes songs from the pen of Viennese song poet Andre Heller, such as "Es is allas unhamlich leicht" (Everything is incredibly easy) or the title track "Annageln kannst es net, die Zeit" (You can't nail down time), as well as classics like Hermann Leopoldi's "In einem kleinen Cafe in Hernals" (In a small cafe in Hernals), Karl Hodina's "Herrgott aus Sta'" (Stony God), or traditional Viennese songs like "Wann i amal stirb" (When I once die) and "I hab die schonen Maderln net erfunden" (I can't take credit for the pretty girls).
