Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Kresimir Strazanac - Lisinski: Deutsche Lieder (CD) (New (N))
World Premiere RecordingVatroslav Lisinsk 1819-1854Deutsche Lieder / German SongsIn his 35 years of life, Lisinski left an unexpectedly large body of work for someone who began pursuing music relatively late. Among the 160 preserved compositions, in addition to operas and orchestral works, notable pieces include choral works, piano pieces (mazurkas and other dances), and art songs in Croatian, Czech, Slovakian, and German.Unlike the Croatian songs, which he composed throughout most of his career, the German songs were written within a shorter time span. Most of his German art songs were composed in 1846, with only a smaller number being written between 1846 and 1851. Moreover, we would be hard-pressed to find a stylistic difference between Lisinski's Croatian and German art songs. It was only after Lisinski's death that musicologist Franjo Ksaver Kuhac undertook a thorough study of Croatian folk music, and his collection of songs significantly influenced later Croatian composers. Therefore, the musical language of both Lisinski's Croatian and German songs is similar or even identical: it is the musical expression of early Romanticism. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Kristof Barati - Beethoven: Vn Concerto Op. 61; Romances For Vn & (CD) (New (N))
Hungarian violinist Kristof Barati has established himself as one of the most captivating voices on the contemporary classical scene. Born in Budapest in 1979 to a violinist mother and cellist father, he spent much of his childhood in Venezuela, where by the age of eight he was already appearing as a soloist with major orchestras. His formative studies took him back to Hungary at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and later to Paris, where he studied with Eduard Wulfson-a pupil of legends such as Yehudi Menuhin, Nathan Milstein and Henryk Szeryng. Barati's artistry is defined by a compelling blend of technical precision and poetic expressivity. Critics have praised his "vast expressive range and impeccable technique," as well as his ability to let the music shine above all. He performs on the exquisite 1703 "Lady Harmsworth" Stradivarius, a tool of rare power and beauty, loaned to him by the Stradivari Society of Chicago. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded Hungary's highest cultural honour, the Kossuth Prize, in 2014. While Barati's discography is impressively broad (encompassing Bach, Ysaÿe, Paganini, Mozart, Korngold and more), his relationship with Beethoven is especially noteworthy. Although his recorded output emphasizes the violin-and-piano sonatas (with Klara Wurtz) rather than only the concerto, his mastery of Beethoven's voice carries over beautifully into his concerto performances. His interpretation of Beethoven's concerto is marked by clarity of line, purity of tone, and a sense of respectful freedom. In the Allegro ma non troppo he finds an elegant balance between classical poise and Romantic impetus; in the Larghetto he offers a deeply lyrical calm; and in the Rondo he embraces spirited vitality without ever sacrificing musical integrity. Reviews of his performances emphasize how Barati "treats music with the greatest respect... knowing his instrument very well so that he can give himself as much freedom as he would want." For listeners seeking a fresh take on this cornerstone of the violin repertoire, Barati brings an interpretation that is both grounded and revelatory: one rooted in tradition, yet vividly alive for today's audiences. Bovenkant formulierThis recording presents Barati with the Concerto Budapest, conducted by Andras Keller, one of Hungary's best orchestras and conductors. This album presents a distinguished selection of chamber works for clarinet and piano, string trio, and reed trio in a variety of instrumental configurations. Composed over the span of several decades, these pieces reveal the most distinctive qualities of the composer's musical language: an intense lyricism, fugal sophistication, propulsive rhythmic energy, daring chromaticism, and evocative allusions to jazz-inflected idioms and Polish folk tradition.Performed with exceptional artistry by some of Poland's finest chamber musicians, this recording offers compelling testimony to the richly deserved renaissance of Tansman's music. His works reward both listener and performer alike, combining expressive depth with brilliant virtuosity and the rare refinement of true chamber interplay. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: L'Achéron - Nicolai: Sons & Suites For Viols (CD) (New (N))
The viola da gamba enjoyed a degree of popularity in Germany during the 17th century. Not only was it often paired with the violin in compositions in which the two instruments engaged in a dialogue, but it also had it's own repertoire. Johann Michael Nicolai spent most of his life in the service of the court of Stuttgart and left several compositions for ensembles of two or three violas da gamba. Here, L'Acheron presents the complete sonatas and suites, in which the spirit of the Italian sonata is combined with the French suite. UPC: 5400439004832Label: RicercarRelease Date: 8.28.26Format: CD

Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: L'Achéron - Soleils De Septembre (CD) (New (N))
Astor Piazzolla was in his early thirties when he travelled to France to study composition with Nadia Boulanger at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau. Her guidance profoundly shaped his music. While Piazzolla sought to refine his classical style, Boulanger urged him to embrace his roots in tango, encouraging him to elevate, not abandon, his identity. This project celebrates their meeting by weaving together their musical worlds: Piazzolla's Argentine heritage - Carlos Gardel, Alberto Ginastera - and Boulanger's French influences, including Gabriel Faure and Lili Boulanger, as well as her love for early music, reflected here through a consort of viols. The dialogue between classical works and Piazzolla's Paris-era pieces evokes their extraordinary exchange: unexpected, magical, and unique. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: L'arte Del Mondo - Friedrich Schwindl: Syms (CD) (New (N))
Completely forgotten today, Friedrich Schwindl (1737 - 1786) was a highly esteemed violinist and composer in his time. His name appears repeatedly in the writings of Leopold Mozart, Charles Burney, and Daniel Schubart, yet his biography can only be reconstructed in a very fragmentary way. Born in Amsterdam, the stages of his life can be traced along the Rhine, from the Netherlands to Switzerland. The focus of his work was instrumental music, especially symphonies, of which 31 survive. They are influenced by the compositions of the Mannheim School but have a more folk-like character. A fascinating discovery of music history, brought to life virtuously and authentically by the musicians of the L'Arte del Mondo orchestra under Werner Ehrhardt. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: L'onda Armonica - Concerti Per Fagotto Vi - Vivaldi Edition Vol. 76 (CD) (New (N))
Vivaldi's bassoon concertos form an impressive and totally unique corpus within the European instrumental landscape of the eighteenth century. With this Volume, No. 76, which again features the bassoonist Sergio Azzolini alongside his ensemble, L'Onda Armonica, the naïve label's Vivaldi Edition brings to completion the entire recordings of the thirty-nine concertos that the Red Priest composed for bassoon. They were written between c.1725 and the end of his life, at a time during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries when this instrument was still employed mainly in the basso continuo. There were already in his own day a number of remarkable bassoon virtuosi whose mastery of the instrument was nothing short of dazzling, which likely stirred the composer's exuberant imagination and insatiable creativity. The musicians of Count Wenzel von Morzin's orchestra in Prague come to mind, to whom Vivaldi dedicated some of these concertos; or Anton Moser, the exceptional virtuoso of the Dresden court orchestra; or again the Venetian Giuseppe 'Gioseppino' Biancardi, dedicatee of RV 502. In this final instalment, Sergio Azzolini brings together the four complete concertos that remained unrecorded: RV 501 (subtitled La Notte), RV 478, RV 487, and RV 466. Then he adds the two that have come down to us in incomplete form: RV 468 and RV 482. Of RV 468 in C major, only the first two movements survive (Allegro molto and Andante), while only the opening Allegro molto of the latter, in D minor, remains. The Italian bassoonist completes the album with movements in the same keys adapted from two cello concertos: RV 399 and RV 406. And to make a fitting conclusion, Azzolini offers his own version of another cello concerto, RV 402, which serves to underscore the close affinity and at times striking resemblance between these two lower-register instruments. From it's first illustrious period onwards, the bassoon reveals a remarkable diversity of expressive facets, far removed from the somewhat unvarying, droll at times even cheeky character withwhich it has, not without reason, been commonly associated since the early twentieth century (RV 468). For this final volume of the series, the director of L'Onda Armonica calls upon a lavishly expanded orchestra, replete with oboes, flutes, chalumeaux, clarinets, and even horns, in order to vary textures and atmospheres in the grand tradition of the Dresden Chapel. The bassoon proves their equal in it's capability for expressing calming feelings witness Il Sonno of RV 501, with it's remarkable string textures, from which the soloist's melodic line gently emerges or consoling warmth (RV 482, Allegro molto). Finally, what a diva it becomes as it gradually unfolds the expansive lyrical aria of the sumptuous Larghetto of RV 478.13 APRIL 2026 UPC: 3700187679569Label: NaiveRelease Date: 8.7.26Format: CD

Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: La Bellemont - Pieces De Violes (CD) (New (N))
Francois Couperin's Pieces de violes comes alive in this deeply expressive new recording by La Bellemont, revealing the viola da gamba at the height of it's emotional and rhetorical power. Written in 1728, these works are among Couperin's final publications and blend the refinement of the French Baroque with striking intimacy, elegance, and imagination. Through two contrasting suites - from the tender melancholy of the E minor Prelude and Sarabande to the radiant brilliance of the A major suite - the album explores a world of subtle emotion, poetic silence, and richly colored harmony, where every phrase speaks with the nuance of the human voice. Performed with exceptional sensitivity by La Bellemont, this recording highlights the ensemble's celebrated warmth, precision, and expressive depth. The musicians illuminate Couperin's unique ability to move beyond virtuosity in search of something more profound and human, - music that, in Couperin's own words, 'touches rather than surprises.' With it's refined interplay of viola da gamba, theorbo, baroque guitar and harpsichord, the album offers an immersive journey into one of the most beautiful and sophisticated sound worlds of the French Baroque. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: La Stagione Frankfurt - Complete Symphonies Op. 3 & 4 (CD) (New (N))
The symphonic oeuvre of the still little-known composer Franz Ignaz Beck, the "Berlioz of the 18th century", is so crazily unconventional and bold that even today one can only marvel at the "modernity" of the contemporary Parisian audience, which was virtually at his feet. Beck turned out to be a progressive and individual "striker and pusher" in the truest sense of the word, opening up the expressive possibilities of his time far into the future. From Mannheim via Italy, Beck found his way to Marseille, where his symphonies developed into true centerpieces of the famous Parisian "Concerts spirituels" and went through numerous print runs. Our new set brings together six symphonies each from Opera 3 and 4. La Stagione on period instruments under the direction of Michael Schneider give a brilliant and highly intense performance. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: La Stagione Frankfurt - Symphonies Op. 4 Nos- 4-6 & Pandore (Excerpts) (CD) (New (N))
Franz Ignaz Beck was a "Mannheim pupil" from the very beginning. The son of the court oboist Franz Aloys Beck, he was taught by other court musicians after his father's early death before studying in Venice with Baldassare Galuppi and ultimately making his way via Naples to France. He was twenty-three when three of his symphonies won acclaim in Paris; yet he was soon drawn onward-to Marseille and then to Bordeaux, where, until 1798 (for more than thirty-five years) he served as Maître de Musique, overseeing operas and concerts as well as the performance of both his own works and those of others. The six symphonies Op. 4 date from his early years on the Garonne and are now presented complete. They represent Beck's final contributions to the genre in which he undertook bold yet successful experiments-stormy and urgent, filled with striking turns that electrified audiences and explain why he was sometimes hailed as the "Berlioz of the eighteenth century." The music from the melodrama Pandora, composed some twenty years later, forms an illuminating counterpoint. UPC: 761203578627Label: Cpo RecordsRelease Date: 7.17.26Format: CD

Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Lahav Shani / Rotterdam Philharmonic - Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 (CD) (New (N))
Dvorák's much-loved Symphony No. 9 'From the New World', with it's captivating blend of Slavonic and American spirit, now joins the sequence of symphonies recorded for Warner Classics by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and it's Chief Conductor Lahav Shani. Paired with the symphony is a rarely heard work, dating from 1905 - 12 years on from the New York premiere of Dvorák's symphony - by the Dutch composer Johan Wagenaar (1862-1941). His concert overture, Cyrano de Bergerac portrays the eloquent hero of Edmond de Rostand's celebrated tragi-comic play of 1897. With it's impetuous opening, soaring melodies and brilliant orchestration, Wagenaar's work is unmistakably in the vein of Richard Strauss's sumptuous symphonic poem Don Juan. When it was performed in Rotterdam in 2025, the critic of de Nieuwe Muze hailed it as "an exciting adventure story in sound". Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Leonard / Theresa Pilsl / Jonas Muller Becker - Johannes Brahms: 49 German Folksongs for Soprano / Baritone & Guitar (CD) (New (N))
Brahms' folk-song settings rank among the most poetic miniatures of his oeuvre. Poised between artful simplicity and Romantic inwardness, they preserve the inflection and narrative candour of oral tradition while elevating it into the realm of Kunstlied. By replacing the piano with guitar, this recording moves the songs closer to their vernacular roots: the texture becomes transparent, the timbre warmer, the expressive gesture more immediate. Sopranist Theresa Pilsl and baritone Jonas Muller approach these songs with idiomatic diction, stylistic acuity and compelling narrative presence - tender and lyrical, playfully dialogic and disarmingly direct. Leonard Becker shapes the guitar part with a refined ear for color and resonance. His playing unites rhythmic precision with cantabile phrasing, creating a breathing acoustic space in which the voices unfold naturally. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Les Musiciens Du Prince - Monaco - Vivaldi: Concerti Per Vari Strumenti Ii - Vivaldi (CD) (New (N))
This first collaboration between the naïve label and Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco, the ensemble founded in 2016 by mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and Jean-Louis Grinda (then director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo), marks the 75th volume of the Vivaldi Edition. It explores the realm of the concerti per vari strumenti ("for various instruments"), more than twenty years after the first volume devoted to the genre, which was conceived together with the Freiburger Barockorchester and Gottfried von der Goltz (Vol. 7, Concerti di Dresda, 2003, OP 30283). In this part of his vast catalogue, Vivaldi reveals a constant spirit of invention and an unfailing gift for the artful pairing of instrumental timbres. His extraordinary sensitivity to timbre and the expressive dimension he imparts to each instrumental colour may be explained both by the various positions he held at the Ospedale della Pietà between 1703 and 1740-violin master, composer, etc.-where he worked with musicians capable of playing a wide variety of instruments, and by the connections he cultivated for about a decade, beginning in 1716, with the court chapel in Dresden, a veritable haven for some of the most outstanding virtuosi in early 18th-century Europe. The present selection of six concertos perfectly reflects the endless range of combinations favoured by Vivaldi. The Concerto in C major, RV 557 (for two violins, two oboes, two recorders, bassoon, strings, and continuo), recalls works by Heinichen in Dresden, as does the Concerto con molti istromenti, RV 555, whose broad and varied scoring-combining winds (two recorders, chalumeau), bowed strings (including two violas da gamba, and sometimes plucked), and harpsichords-bears even more direct witness to a genre that was highly fashionable in Saxony during the 1720s and 1730s. By contrast, the Concerto in B-flat major, RV 553, features four obbligato violins that often dialogue in pairs; notwithstanding it's brilliant character, it's structure recalls the concerto grosso, while it's gentle expressiveness calls to mind the concerto da camera. As for the Concertos RV 535 and RV 543, they give pride of place to the oboe-paired with a second oboe in the former and violin in the latter. The natural shifts in texture lead Vivaldi to explore a variety of approaches in matters of nuance and instrumental balance.Throughout this recording, notable for it's exquisitely delicate balances (Concerto RV 570, Presto) and an incredibly refined palette of colours (Concerto RV 555, Largo a piacimento, or Concerto RV 543, Minuetto), Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco display an unruffled elegance. Guided by the ensemble's musical director, the Milanese Gianluca Capuano, tempi feel perfectly judged and natural and lines are clearly drawn. Forty-seven minutes imbued with an utterly springlike exuberance. UPC: 3700187690250Label: NaiveRelease Date: 7.3.26Format: CD

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 in D-minorGerd Schaller, conductor, London Philharmonic OrchestraWith a final movement, drawn from original sources and supplemented and completed by Gerd Schaller'My work on completing the symphony drew upon compositional principles characteristic of Bruckner's later style. From the Seventh Symphony onwards, and certainly by the Eighth at the latest, this particular late style that he had developed became increasingly evident. I applied these principles by analogy and developed them further. Further sources of inspiration were Bruckner's 'Psalm 150' and his symphonic choral work 'Helgoland'. Ultimately, my decades of experience as a conductor and Bruckner exponent also found their way into this performance, although it should be noted that I had already performed an initial version of my completed work in concert and recorded it on CD in 2016. Joly Braga Santos (1924-88) was one of the most important composers in twentieth-century Portugal. In his early works his fondness for modal harmony, absorbed from the Portuguese masters of the Renaissance, and his busy counterpoint combine to make him sound surprisingly close to such particularly English composers as Vaughan Williams and Moeran. Although his harmonic language became more astringent with time, it retained a burly sense of humour and a powerful charge of energy, often infused with the spirit of Portuguese folk-dance. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Luca Pisaroni - Mozart: Don Giovanni (CD) (New (N))
Ivan Fischer and Channel Classics release a recording of Mozart's Don Giovanni with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Recorded live in October 2025 at the spectacular Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, this is the first volume of a Mozart trilogy, with The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro to follow in the coming years. With a dream duo (Andre Schuen as Don Giovanni and Luca Pisaroni as Leporello) and a first-rate cast, Ivan Fischer presents his vision of Mozart's masterpiece: 'In a nutshell the first two bars of this opera describe the story: the fight between order and rebellion. The basses repeat their constant bottom note three times, finally overpowering the revolutionary syncopations of the violins. The energetic, defiant violin notes represent Don Giovanni, the man, who doesn't accept any rules, who doesn't know limits. He follows his own instincts, uses and misuses his power, his wealth, his servant, to follow one goal only: his passion. On this journey he kills, he hurts, damages others, without any remorse or even second thoughts. He is perfectly free, happy, liberated from inner doubts and outer control, from all the regulations of what we call morality.' UPC: 723385499268Label: Channel ClassicsRelease Date: 8.28.26Format: CD

Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Luca Sanzo - Bach-Kodaly-Ligeti-Ronchetti - Luca Sanzo (Vn) (CD) (New (N))
A listening experience entirely dedicated to the sounds of the viola, from classical to contemporary. This is the new album byLuca Sanzo, a musician with an intense concert, recording, and teaching career, and professor of viola at the Santa Cecilia Conservatoryin Rome. A frequent guest at important venues and prestigious chamber music, contemporary, and electronic musicfestivals, Luca Sanzo has dedicated many compositions to him. The album opens with Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita in A minorfor solo flute, BWV 1013, performed in a G minor transcription; it is followed by another Bach work, the Chromatic Fantasy andFugue, BWV 903 for harpsichord, in the 1950 transcription for solo viola by Zoltan Kodaly, a Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, and teacher. The first edition was edited by violist William Primrose, who also distributed it. This fascinating and intensesonic journey through different compositional worlds continues in chronological order with Gyorgy Ligeti's Sonata for Viola Solo, composed between 1991 and 1994, in six movements, alternating between slow and fast movements. The program concludeswith Lucia Ronchetti's Requiem for Viola Solo (1982), now dedicated to Michele Sanzo, brother of Luca Sanzo. As Lucia Ronchettiexplains: 'In the Requiem I tried to create a sonic labyrinth from which there seems to be no escape, making the performance asevere physical and mental test. In this sense, Beethoven's Great Fugue, Op. 133, seemed to me the most extreme and rigorousrepresentation of a sonic prison and a search for liberation and elevation.' Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Luca Sanzo - Rubinstein & Winkler: Sons For Viola & Piano (CD) (New (N))
Anton Rubinstein and Alexander Adolfovich Winkler represent two generations of Russian Romanticism, and their sonatas for viola and piano reveal contrasting yet complementary approaches to chamber music and to the expressive potential of the viola.Anton Rubinstein (1829-1894), one of the founders of the Russian conservatory system and a towering figure as pianist, conductor, and composer, approached chamber music with a distinctly European Romantic sensibility. His Sonata for Viola and Piano is notable for it's lyrical breadth and dramatic contrasts. Rubinstein treats the viola not merely as an accompanying voice but as a fully expressive partner to the piano, exploiting it's warm, dark timbre and vocal qualities. The sonata's sweeping melodies, rich harmonic language, and expansive formal design reflect Rubinstein's admiration for composers such as Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms. At the same time, moments of intense lyricism and emotional weight highlight his belief in music as a direct vehicle for personal expression.Alexander Adolfovich Winkler (1865-1935), a student of Sergei Taneyev and a representative of a later Russian school, brings a more refined and introspective character to his Sonata for Viola and Piano. Winkler's writing is marked by structural clarity, contrapuntal skill, and subtle harmonic color. His sonata emphasizes the viola's expressive nuance, often favoring intimate dialogue between the instruments rather than virtuosic display. The work blends Romantic warmth with Classical balance, revealing Winkler's interest in formal discipline and textural transparency.Luca Sanzo is a pupil of Bruno Giuranna. His concert career has taken him to the world's major concert halls, both as a soloist and in collaboration with leading musicians. He has collaborated as principal viola soloist with various orchestras, including those of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari and Early Music orchestra Concerto Italiano. He teaches viola at the Conservatorio di S. Cecilia in Rome. He has recorded for Nuova Era, Bottega Discantica, BMG Ricordi, Opus 111, Tactus, Edi Pan, Stradivarius, Naïve, Chandos and Naxos. Italian pianist Maurizio Paciariello, schooled by Aldo Ciccolini and Paul Badura-Skoda and Prize winner of the ARD Competition, is a champion of rare repertoire and specialist on period instruments. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Lucy Goddard - James Weeks: Plain Air (CD) (New (N))
I have walked out of the body and into the mountain. I am a manifestation of it's total life, as is the starry saxifrage or the white-winged ptarmigan.'Plain Air is a musical response to one of the most extraordinary and celebrated works of nature writing in English, The Living Mountain by the Scottish writer Nan Shepherd. This 53-minute work places Shepherd's stunning, crystalline prose within an expansive and elemental musical landscape. Pianist Siwan Rhys (GBSR Duo) creates an environment of spacious stillness, surrounded by a halo of electronic tone, while singer Lucy Goddard (EXAUDI) retraces Shepherd's path, reciting her text simply as she goes deeper into the mountain world and into herself.Plain Air's slow unfolding across almost an hour of music creates a deeply immersive listening experience in which Shepherd's unique poetic voice, and the transcendental beauty and mystery of the Cairngorms, are vividly brought to life. Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Ludmila / Alissa Firsova Pavlova - Joseph Hass: the Violin Works (CD) (New (N))
Joseph Haas (1879-1960) was a German composer and student of Max Reger, whose works for violin and piano (1905-1912) clearly show the development from an early style strongly influenced by Reger to greater independence. While the early sonatinas are still strictly formal and harmonically dense, his personal style is already evident in the Violin Sonata, Op. 21. With the Suite Grillen, Op. 40, he achieves a mature, transparent style of writing in which the piano and violin interact on an equal footing. The Czech violinist Ludmila Pavlova has been concertmaster of the Prague Chamber Orchestra since 2023 and teaches at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Alissa Firsova is a pianist, composer, and conductor. Her works are performed internationally, and she also performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician. Pavlova and Firsova have been working together as a duo since 2017 and present their debut recording here! UPC: 4260052386996Label: Ars ProduktionRelease Date: 8.21.26Format: CD

Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Luigi Magistrelli - Mozart: Trio Kegelstatt & Clarinet Trios By Stiehl (CD) (New (N))
Music for clarinet, viola, and piano in the first half of the nineteenth century occupies a distinctive but relatively rare corner of the chamber repertoire. While the Classical period had established mixed ensembles involving winds, strings, and piano-most famously in Mozart and Beethoven-the exact combination of clarinet, viola, and piano did not yet become standardized. Instead, composers of the early Romantic era approached this grouping with flexibility, often through ad hoc works, alternative scorings, or arrangements shaped by available performers. This period was marked by expanding expressive ambitions and rapid developments in instrument design. The clarinet gained a wider range and greater agility, the viola benefited from improved projection and a more soloistic role, and the piano evolved into a powerful yet nuanced partner. Together, these instruments offered composers a rich palette of timbres: the clarinet's lyrical warmth, the viola's dark middle register, and the piano's harmonic breadth. This new recording starts off with the first work written for the combination of clarinet, viola and piano: the famous Kegelstatt Trio by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Following are works by Johann Stiehl (1800-1872), Josef Triebensee (1772-1846) and Robert Schumann (1810-1856), whose Marchenerzahlungen is the embodiment of Romantic expression and storytelling. Played by Italian clarinetist Luigi Magistrelli, Matteo Fedeli and Carlo Balzaretti. Magistrelli made numerous recordings for Brilliant Classics with works by C.P.E. Bach (95307), Giuliani (95541), Kummer (94472), Archduke Rudolph (94952), Rebay (94171) and Fuchs (96305). 'Luigi Magistrelli is a skilled artist, with the fingers and the enthusiasm for Weber.' Alliance Entertainment Pre-Order: Lukas Geniusas - Schubert/Liszt: Wanderer Fantasy Tchaikovsky: Con (CD) (New (N))
Pianist Lukas Geniusas pays tribute to the fantasy, a form synonymous with freedom, dear to the Romantics. Schubert sets the figure of the wanderer to music in his Lied Der Wanderer, which, a few years later, would give rise to a large-scale instrumental work: the Fantasy in C major, D. 760 (1822), later known as the "Wanderer" Fantasy. It's four-part structure could be that of a four-movement sonata cycle, but these sections follow one another without interruption in a continuous process, like an uninterrupted journey. Fascinated by this work, Liszt wrote his transcription for piano and orchestra in 1851, two years before his famous Sonata in B minor, which is also monothematic and unfolds as a single, vast movement. More in line with the classicists, Tchaikovsky cultivates virtuosity and instrumental brilliance in his Concert Fantasy of 1884. With the Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen, conducted by Modestas Pitrenas, Geniusas offers a rare (if not unprecedented) pairing of these two fantasies, separated by just over six decades.
