The inspiring new album Shapes of Water by renowned pianist Carmen Stefanescu takes listeners on a captivating musical journey. Following her successful debut album with Prospero Classical, The Voice of Piano, the pianist has recorded pieces based on the theme of water for her new release. Water has always fascinated artists as a theme and symbol - it stands for purity and renewal, but also for mystery, movement and the transience of time. In her new album Shapes of Water, pianist Carmen Stefanescu transports her audience into a world of sound in which water itself becomes music: it trickles, glitters, flows - and always comes to rest. Released in 1985, Carnivore is the ferocious debut album by the Brooklyn metal band Carnivore, fronted by Peter Steele (later of Type O Negative). It stands as one of the rawest and most apocalyptic statements of the 1980s underground metal scene - a volatile mix of thrash, hardcore punk, and post-nuclear fantasy. The album's concept envisions a devastated future where survivors form brutal tribes, embracing violence, survivalism, and nihilism. Songs like "Predator," "Legion of Doom," and "God Is Dead" channel this dystopian chaos through pounding riffs, shouted vocals, and militaristic rhythms.Lyrically, it blends dark humor, social satire, and cold-war paranoia - reflecting the tensions of the Reagan era and New York's decaying urban landscape. Musically, it's aggressive and primal, fusing metal's heaviness with punk's raw speed and attitude.Though initially polarizing, Carnivore became a cult classic, influencing countless crossover and industrial metal acts. It set the stage for Peter Steele's later transformation into the gothic grandeur of Type O Negative, but here, everything is still stripped down, feral, and scorched by nuclear fire. Here comes the reissue as Gatefold, Red with Black Splatter

Digitally remastered and expanded edition. No one in the New York crossover metal scene could make a guy laugh like Carnivore front man Pete Steele. Whether it was the vomit-in-the-toilet track "Jack Daniels and Pizza," which opened the band's second album Retaliation or the crudely drawn obscene Sharpie renderings Steele would scribble on passed out musicians and crew members. Steele was a one of a kind and his perverse, oddball sense of humor infiltrated and enhanced his viciously aggressive blend of hardcore and metal. Just take two of Retaliation's many standouts, "Angry Neurotic Catholics" and "S.M.D. (Suck My Dick)." "For Retaliation, I really wanted to make an album that was half Black Sabbath-type metal and half ripping hardcore," he said before the album's original release in 1987. "I just loved that vibe, so I incorporated the slowness and heavy dirge sound with the incredible energy of bands like Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law and Sheer Terror." More than 30 years after it's release, Retaliation still stands as a landmark achievement in crossover music and another indication of Pete Steele's immense gift for songwriting, a talent he would demonstrate time and again between 1991 and 2007 with Type O Negative. Here comes the 2018 reissue with the original cover, bonus tracks and new liner notes by Jon Wiederhorn.

Following the brutal impact of their self-titled debut, Brooklyn's Carnivore returned with "Retaliation," an even more ferocious assault of crossover thrash that pushed the boundaries of extremity and controversy. Led by the commanding presence of Peter Steele (later of Type O Negative fame), the album delivers a relentless barrage of apocalyptic visions, urban warfare, and nihilistic rage.Musically heavier and more refined than it's predecessor, "Retaliation" showcases the band's evolution while maintaining their signature blend of hardcore punk aggression and metal brutality. Steele's distinctive bass tone and growling vocals anchor tracks that range from breakneck thrashers to mid-paced, groove-laden crushers. Songs like "Mad Dog," "Ground Zero Brooklyn," and "Race War" paint disturbing portraits of societal collapse, while the epic title track serves as a savage centerpiece.Lyrically provocative and intentionally shocking, the album explores themes of post-nuclear survival, carnage, and humanity's darkest impulses through a deliberately over-the-top lens that blurred the lines between satire and sincerity. The controversial content sparked debate and censorship attempts, cementing Carnivore's reputation as one of the most extreme and uncompromising acts of the era."Retaliation" stands as a landmark of late-80s crossover metal-raw, primitive, and unapologetically savage. It remains a cult classic that influenced countless extreme metal bands while showcasing the early genius of Peter Steele before his transformation into gothic metal royalty. Here comes the reissue as Gatefold LP (Total Clear with Black + White Splatter)

New York City-based viola da gambist Caroline Nicolas is one to watch - a captivating performer and "one of the finest gambists working today" (Gotham Early Music Scene). With her star rapidly in the ascendent, Caroline has performed with ensembles including The English Concert, Kammerorchester Basel and Philharmonia Baroque, and collaborated with the likes of Jordi Savall, William Christie and Kristian Bezuidenhout. For her solo debut recording, Caroline brings out the big guns of the viola da gamba repertoire from France's defining era of the instrument - the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Pieces de viole were integral to the French instrumental baroque, and Caroline's programme leads with selections by the master of the genre, Marin Marais. For contrast, Caroline juxtaposes the first Suite by the iconoclastic Antoine Forqueray, and in between offers a pair of amuse bouche, an intricate Chaconne by Marais' tutor, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, and a Prelude by the pedagogue Le Sieur de Machy. In keeping with French viol music's nuance and relative restraint, Caroline is accompanied solely by theorbo, it's complementary timbre reflecting the repertoire's aesthetic. In May 2026, Metier Records proudly presents American Ethos from acclaimed pianist Carolyn Enger, a stunning collection of works from a range of American composers, including Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, John Corigliano, Ned Rorem, William Grant Still, Florence Price, and many others. Released in time for the celebration of the 250th anniversary of America's Declaration of Independence, Carolyn Enger poses the question of how to characterise American composition over so many years and throughout times of such sharp division. How can a musical 'Ethos' be encompassed in all it's various styles, sentiments, and beliefs? "I wanted to have a broad feeling of Americana," Enger explains. "Voices that have been overlooked over the years then come to light because they influenced voices that we're very familiar with."Enger has long been a champion of the piano music of Ned Rorem, and American Ethos centers his work, The Wind Remains, alongside three selections from Soundpoints, each a brief moment of distilled emotion. Rorem then stands as a starting point for connecting Enger's vision of American composition threads. Contemporary composer Daron Hagen was Rorem's first student, and we hear his Five Nocturnes, telling of a family setting down for the night. Rorem's roots in American music go deep as well, having studied with composer Margaret Bonds, who was herself a student and friend of composer Florence Price. Enger presents the African-American sacred music traditions behind Florence Price's Adoration. Price influenced many American composers beyond Bonds and Rorem, including William Grant Still. Price's influence on Grant Still is easily heard in his evocation of the divine in Seven Traceries: A Suite for Solo Piano, of which Enger plays four.Perhaps one of the most famous of American voices is Leonard Bernstein, who spoke about the healing power of music as a response to violence, and several works in this collection connect to him. His Thirteen Anniversaries, by turn tender and whimsical, celebrates 13 family members, friends, and colleagues. One of these is composer Craig Urquhart, a former assistant, represented here by The Awakening, Urquhart's birthday offering to Bernstein, and Adieu, which followed the global pandemic and 2020 political upheavals. John Corigliano's An Anniversary for Lenny is an affectionate remembrance for a 2016 Bernstein centennial celebration, and Aaron Copland's 'Our Town' Three Piano Excerpts is similarly dedicated to Bernstein. Completing Enger's vision of a comprehensive, inclusive American ethos is 'The Vastland' from Under the Blue Dome by San Francisco-based composer of Native American descent JJ Hollingsworth, conjuring the Colorado plains, and Margaret Ruthven Lang's Twilight, the first woman to have a work performed by a major American orchestra.New York City-based writer and editor Steve Smith says in his excellent booklet notes: "What emerges in this collection of disparate yet interconnected lives and works is a patchwork quilt of individual voices, perspectives, and aspirations, woven together to form a more perfect union stronger than it's parts. The music they made, informed by shared stories and songs, brings to life the sky, stone, sinew, steel, and sentiment that make up this nation - an American ethos, expressed in sound".Internationally celebrated American pianist Carolyn Enger has gained critical acclaim for her exquisite lyrical playing and her deeply felt interpretations, with many performances across the United States and Europe. Her 2013 recording of Ned Rorem: Piano Album I was on The New York Times Best of Classical list that year, and her recent Metier recording Resonating Earth, an artistic response to the contemporary climate crisis, received glowing praise: "a thoughtful programme. Enthralling" (Nigel Simeone, International Piano). Ms Enger studied at the Manhattan School of Music and is a Steinway Performing and Recording Artist. Following the widely acclaimed release of 'Body Shell' in Spring 2025, Carre returns to Tempa, for a new EP, 'Hibiscus', featuring a collaborative track with LA-based artist Bbyafricka, highlighting the synergy of West Coast Rap & London Soundsystem culture. Connected by warmth and groove that define where Carre is musically right now, each of the four tracks on 'Hibiscus' stands on it's own, yet together they continue to showcase Carre's flair for producing sleek dubstep with melodic verve. From the shimmering 'Warm Light', the razor-sharp edge of 'X Effect', the deep stepper 'Ride It Out', to the stripped back 'Hibiscus' which glows with the addition of Bbyafricka's sultry vocals, the EP is a concise statement of Carre's evolving sound.Speaking about the collaboration, Carre says, 'I'd been a fan of Bbyafricka's sound, style, and tone - tracks like 'Baton Rouge' and 'Dumbo' really stood out to me - and I could already imagine how her voice would fit with my production. The fact that she's from LA made the connection feel even more natural. When I reached out, she was down straight away and came back with something I genuinely loved. She captured the energy of the track perfectly, and together I think we created something that feels authentic and even better than I'd imagined.'For Bbyafricka, working on 'Hibiscus' was a moment of overcoming writer's block, 'this song was me coming out of it on a weekend spent in Joshua tree, sitting outside looking at the view and the solar panels. I think you can envision what my view was when you play the song,' she explains. Carre's next outing on Tempa is a welcome return, signifying the home run she's on as a producer and marking another impressive installment in the producer's growing catalogue. In the last three years, Carre has quickly become a leading figure in the contemporary wave of artists pushing the true school Dubstep sound to new places and new audiences, expanding on the roots laid down by the likes of Skream, Benga, and Loefah.
