Pop/soul legend Withers was one of the most important figures in '70s R&B, but most of his catalog remained shamefully unavailable throughout the '90s. Fans who followed Withers into the CD age (and those who weren't around during his glory days) were forced to content themselves with this short but definitive anthology. Withers' smooth '80s hit "Just The Two Of Us" kicks things off, but it's the '70s cuts that are the meat of his catalog.

Limited edition of 7500 numbered copies on translucent yellow coloured 180-gram audiophile vinyl. Bill Withers was a modest, gentle, and yet towering musical figure responsible for some of the most important, universally known soul hits ever written. It's no wonder that "Just the Two of Us" and "Ain't No Sunshine" won him two Grammy awards and undoubtedly played a huge role in getting him inducted into both the Songwriters and Rock and Roll hall of fame. Just As I Am is Withers' debut album and is by all measures a brilliant first outing. The record features twelve tunes of which most are Bill's own compositions, each song a reflection of his unique introspective, folky take on soul music. By far the most famous song on the album is the smash hit "Ain't No Sunshine", originally released as a B-side to the tune & "Harlem" in 1971. It turned Withers into a worldwide soul icon, so much so that the song won him a Grammy for Best R&B Song in 1972. Considering the other single on the album is "Grandma's Hands", it's not hard to understand why it's ranked #304 on Rolling Stone's list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. This edition includes a booklet featuring a reflective essay on Bill Withers written by writer, poet and civil rights activist Kevin Powell.

Reissued for the First Time Since 1975 on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl. Bill Withers' 'Live At Carnegie Hall' was recorded almost 40 years ago on a rainy Friday evening, but it is still regarded as one of the best live performances in the history of Soul music. With beautiful renditions of his classics 'Ain't No Sunshine', 'Use Me', 'Grandma's Hands' and of course his biggest hit 'Lean On Me', this shouldn't come as a surprise. Withers' brand of melancholy Soul plucks at your heartstrings and creates a wistful yearning, but it is still one of the most uplifting pieces of music you will ever find.Track List

Billie Holiday - "All Or Nothing At All (Verve Acoustic Sounds Series)" [180g LP]Recorded in five sessions over 1956/1957 and released in 1958, this 12-track affair is loaded with the classic standards from Berlin, Ellington, Gershwin and more. Though some claimed Billie Holiday was beyond her peak at this point, it was Miles Davis who countered that this was her most effective time with her "deepest understanding and control" of the repertoire she was performing. Her supporting cast on this album contributes to that as well, which included Barney Kessel (Guitar), Ben Webster (Tenor Sax), "Sweets" Edison (Trumpet), and Jimmy Rowles (Piano). Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.Track List

Billie Holiday is captured live at Storyville in Boston in 1951 and 1953. The discreet recordings capture Lady Day in prime emotive voice. On most selections she is accompanied by the Carl Drinkard Trio, but six others find her joined by Buster Harding’s Trio; the great tenor Stan Getz sits in on three of these numbers. Previously out of press for over 25 years, this historic recording has now been remastered and pressed on audiophile-grade vinyl at Pallas Group in Germany.

Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing housed in tip-on jacket. Small jazz groups brought out the best in Billie Holiday - especially groups as good as the one heard on this classic 1957 recording. Ben Webster, Harry "Sweets" Edison and the other members of this stellar ensemble were not just gifted soloists but sensitive accompanists as well. Lady Day was rarely more ably supported than she was on this program of sturdy standards, including three gems by the Gershwin brothers - and she rarely sounded more luminous.Track List

Vinyl LP pressing. The life and career of Billie Holiday was underscored by triumphs and tragedies. One of the greatest artists of her generation, no-one conveys deep emotion better than 'Lady Day'. Hers was a new jazz voice, influenced by jazz instrumentalists, with it's ability to manipulate tempo and phrasing in bold and enthralling ways. The great Frank Sinatra was both a friend and a fan of her music. He said of her in 1958, "With few exceptions, every major pop singer in the U.S. during her generation has been touched in some way by her genius. It is Billie who was, and still remains, the greatest single musical influence on me." In fact, her legacy carries across the generations, with artists such as Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, and Amy Winehouse citing her as an influence. This collection traces an important six years of her early recording career which built the platform for the huge commercial success she enjoyed during the mid to late 40s, before she began to succumb to the lifestyle which eventually destroyed her. It features iconic and beautifully harrowing recordings such as "Summertime", "Strange Fruit" Night & Day", "God Bless The Child" and "Solitude", demonstrating her unique and unmistakable way of interpreting the songs. It is a fascinating and beguiling musical journey.

Lady Sings the Blues
Limited vinyl LP repressing of this classic 1958 album by the jazz icon. Lady in Satin is the penultimate album completed by the singer and last released in her lifetime. The original album was produced by Irving Townsend, and engineered by Fred Plaut. The song material for Lady in Satin derived from the usual sources for Holiday in her three decade career, that of the Great American Songbook of classic pop. Unlike the bulk of Holiday's recordings, rather than in the setting of a jazz combo Holiday returns to the backdrop of full orchestral arrangements as done during her Decca years, this time in the contemporary vein of Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald on her Songbooks series. The album consists of songs Holiday had never recorded before. The arrangements were by bandleader Ray Ellis, Holiday familiar with his Ellis in Wonderland album. Soloists on the album included Mel Davis, Urbie Green, and bebop trombone pioneer J.J. Johnson.Track List

The recordings included on the classic album Lady Sings the Blues come from two different studio dates, a complete session recorded in 1956, and four tunes from a 1954 date. An additional track from the latter session has also been added here as a bonus. The emphasis on both sessions is placed on Billie's singing. Although important musicians are present on both dates (Charlie Shavers, Tony Scott, Paul Quinichette and Wynton Kelly, on the 1956 session, and Harry "Sweets" Edison, Willie Smith and Barney Kessel, on the 1954 date), little room is left for any instrumental improvisation. Recorded with producer Phil Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, Laura Veirs) at his Sugar Mountain studio, alongside an all-star cast of musicians, Billie Marten's fifth studio album, Dog Eared, is a warm, rich and textured record that bristles with confidence and self-belief, with Billie already approaching the prolificacy of a “lifer” with so much life left to live. It’s a left turn from her previous recordings, albeit a subtle one, taken with a deftness of touch.
