L.H. "Buddy" & Debra Hough opened the Museum of Tragedy in U.S. History in their own home, next door to the Old Jail in St. Augustine in 1965. Buddy's acceptance into the Chamber of Commerce, after years of fighting the old city's take on his collection's "articles of dubious authenticity and decidedly bad taste" briefly improved traffic at the museum. Beggar Weeds grew up on Florida field trips to roadside attractions, citrus stands and critter zoos, and together they celebrated the music and stories of their shared Panhandle roots. Their telling is urgent, driven by tuneful voices of three brothers from other mothers baying over taut beats, forecasting the imminent alt-country movement. The yarns and their delivery are fresh and unburdened by pomp and wizardry. David Fricke writes of the band in Melody Maker, "In short, a delightful surprise that flies in the face of fashion."

Behemoth's ascent is a story that can be told in many ways and from many perspectives. When one writes about a band that has written and rewritten the book on extreme metal for over 30 years that much is inevitable. However, it would be difficult to really capture the story's essence without focusing on the ambition and power which drive the band. While both power and ambition, as terms, can be tied in some way and some meaning to every story - their interpretation here is exact and carefully chosen. Ambition is the charioteer, navigating ever forwards to new horizons and visions and power are the horses, without whose prowess those horizons would be but a distant dream.
The new opus, The Shit Ov God, is emblematic of that. Here's a band that, 34 years in, is releasing it's most inflammatory and extreme record to date. 8 songs that go into the fathoms of humanity, divinity and what defiance means in an age where individuality is prized but everyone is clinging to their saviors. Musically, politically, or otherwise. The title of the album is in line with those sensibilities. Intentionally polarizing, founder and frontman Nergal, says of the title "We chose this provocative title deliberately, rejecting subtlety in favor of a direct and polarizing statement. Artistically, bringing such a striking sonic vision to life is no small feat. Aside from the band in se, Behemoth meticulously chose the audiovisual artists involved on the album. Production on the album was helmed by the inimitable Jens Bogren of Fascination Street Studios (Emperor, Enslaved, Kreator, Rotting Christ et al. ) Working closely with the band, Bogren's deft hand underscored the band's natural sound while sacrificing none of the mayhem and ferocity which permeates the band's essence. A Study Of Losses is the seventh studio album from Beirut, the musical project of Zach Condon. The project originated in spring 2023, when Viktoria Dalborg, director at the Swedish circus Kompani Giraff, reached out to Condon, asking if he would be interested to provide the music for their next project, a show based on an adaptation of a novel by German author Judith Schalansky. The main themes in Schalansky's book and in the adaptation for the circus show deal with the concept of loss and the impermanence of everything known to us: from extinct animal species, lost architectural and literary treasures to more abstract concepts of loss through the process of aging. In close collaboration, A Study Of Losses, turned into a rather unexpected piece of music-at 18 songs and nearly an hour long, it is by far the largest album Beirut has ever done, and amongst some of their most beautiful work to date.Track List

Karel Husa and the Belfiato Quintet - music inspired by freedom, recollections, and birds / Following the Prague Symphony Orchestra (CD Music for Prague, 2021) and the clarinettist Anna Paulova (2023), the Belfiato Quintet has also headed down the path of discovering the remarkable works of Karel Husa, a Pulitzer Prize and Grawemeyer Award winner, and one of the most prominent figures of Czech 20th-century music. Husa went to Paris to study underNadia Boulanger and Arthur Honegger. After the communist putsch of February 1948, he decided to remain abroad, working at Cornell University in the USA most of his life. He never forgot his homeland, however. This can be heard, for example, in his colourfulSerenade for Wind Quintet, Strings, Xylophone and Harp, which draws upon material from his earlier Evocations de Slovaquie. In these works, the composer relived his difficult decision not to return to his homeland. About Recollections for wind quintet and piano, the composer said: "Recollections are vivid, but not exactly precise. The way we remember things is a mix of accuracy and fancy... To accomplish all this, I wanted the composition to develop from simple tones and to return to them, all the while researching new combinations and sonorities in the quintet." Husa put his love of birds into his Five Poems for wind quintet, "for these wonderful creatures, who embellish our lives so magically"; he employs a wide range of musical resources including microtones and aleatory. For a decade, the trio of Ben Allison, Steve Cardenas, and Ted Nash has coalesced into a singular ensemble highlighting impressive group interplay and creative interpretations of the music of their favorite composers. After years of focusing on the music of others, the drummer-less trio found it the right time to take on the compositions of it's members on the new recording, Triological.The relationships between Allison, Cardenas, and Nash have spanned decades. Woodwind master Nash enlisted Allison for the bassist's first professional gig in 1990. Their bond deepened later in the decade as they became members of the Jazz Composers Collective. Guitarist Steve Cardenas was brought into Allison's orbit in 2004, the two discovering a deep connection evidenced on the many projects they have worked on together. The trio came together when Cardenas and Allison were approached with a gig in Upstate New York. For the performance, they decided to focus on the music of guitar legend Jim Hall. After a first rehearsal, Cardenas and Allison decided to add a horn to the mix in homage to the revolutionary trio of Jimmy Giuffre, which had featured Hall and bassist Ralph Pena. Their choice of Nash as the woodwind voice was inspired and the trio has been impressing listeners ever since.The configuration of the trio may owe much to the model of that Giuffre group. They reference, but do not intend to duplicate, that trio's example, as the instrumentation has allowed for an openness to explore any musical direction, from free to folk, all in the most conversational of manners. Naturally, the group's first recording, Quiet Revolution (Newvelle and Sonic Camera Records, 2016/2018), featured their arrangements of Hall and Giuffre. Their next recording, Somewhere Else: West Side Story Songs (Plastic Sax Records, 2019) presented the trio's takes on the music of Leonard Bernstein's beloved musical. Their 2022 Sunnyside recording, Healing Power, celebrated the genius of Carla Bley and their 2024 release, Tell The Birds I Said Hello, shined light on the brilliance of Herbie Nichols.When faced with choosing another composer to feature, the trio reached a creative dead end. They felt that it was time to do something conceptually different and that provided a reflection of where they were as an ensemble. Each being a celebrated composer in his own right, the trio decided it was time for a new challenge: To write for this themselves.The trio members knew that a program of original music from each member would provide a fantastic mix of music, as they all write so differently from one another. The trio brought three pieces each (plus one more for Allison) to record at Matt Balitsaris's Maggie's Farm Studio over two days in late June 2025.The trio of Ben Allison, Steve Cardenas, and Ted Nash has spent ten years honing an individual group sound by funneling the influences, their years of experience, and their love of discovery. Ben Chapman is a road warrior who has spent the previous three years in a whirlwind of activity — writing songs for friends like Hayes Carll, Brent Cobb, and Marcus King; making his Grand Ole Opry debut; and releasing three acclaimed albums of country-fried funky-tonk, but nothing could have prepared him for what 2025 would bring him.
