Ses racines caribeennes et etats-uniennes ont ete enregistrees des le debut du XXe siecle : discours enflammes et prêches exaltees, negro spirituals, folk ou poetes marquant le rythme. Mais les etonnants enregistrements reunis ici montrent avant tout comment les commandeurs de quadrille se sont metamorphoses en disc jockeys animant les pistes de danse au micro, posant ainsi les bases de la culture hip hop. D'autres aspects des authentiques racines du rap comme les DJ radio, le talking blues et le jazz sont commentes ici par Bruno Blum.
