Rob Scheps returns to SteepleChase with Blue States, a vivid new chapter for the long-running Core Tet and a striking evolution from his 2019 release Comencio (SCCD 31866). Drawing on the same sharp instincts praised in earlier reviews-his 'big-toned' authority on tenor and the 'loose, inviting allure' of his soprano-Scheps expands his palette here with an unexpected but compelling front line of trumpet, soprano saxophone, and flute. The result is a sound world both airy and electric, shaped by Scheps' gift for uncovering overlooked gems: music by Shunzo Ohno, Carla Bley, Sam Jones, Ronnie Boykins, and John Abercrombie, all reimagined with the Core Tet's signature clarity and drive.
