Andy Shauf - He's a sad-sack Saskatchewanian songwriter who grew up in a tiny town (pop. 919) off the Trans-Canada Highway somewhere between Swift Current and Moose Jaw. His breakthrough album was called Bearer of Bad News. But don't feel bad for Andy Shauf. Social invitations have been pouring in from Jeff Tweedy, Nick Hornby and Low (for whom he opened two U.S. tours in 2015). The Party is a series of character sketches, ostensibly set at a specific gathering. It's not exactly a concept record or a John Hughes script for a Robert Altman film, but writing it was definitely a way for Shauf to get out of his own head. The Party will spawn no hangover regrets for it's creator, even if it's characters have more than a few. On it, awkward characters show up "Early to the Party," dance in the living room ("Martha Sways"), and either reveal life-changing secrets ("To You") or try their hardest to reveal nothing at all ("The Magician"). Fuzzed-out guitars collide with string sections and dreamy synths, all draped over delicate piano, acoustic guitars and rainy-day drums. Oh, and clarinet. On Bearer of Bad News, Shauf started out with 100 songs and whittled it down to 11. This time, with a clearer vision and narrative construct in mind, he focused on 15 and cut it to 10. After famously playing their second show at Woodstock in August 1969, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young spent the rest of the year touring and writing songs for what would become CSNY's 1970 debut, Déjà Vu. Live at Fillmore East, 1969 is a newly discovered multi-track recording of the band's September 20, 1969, concert at the historic Fillmore East in New York City captures an early moment from that first tour. Including both Acoustic and Electric sets, as well as hit tracks such as "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "Our House", "I've Loved Her So Long", etc. Stephen Stills and Neil Young compiled and mixed the original eight-track concert recordings at Sunset Studios to keep the production entirely analog. Takes McRae's now-considerable powers and hardwires them for mass appeal. Stealth single "Savannah" is one for the yearners. The pulsing, country-adjacent song immediately brings the best of Phoebe Bridgers to mind, with McRae singing in an acrobatic whisper over a feather light acoustic guitar. By the time "Savannah" hits it's crescendo, it's crystal clear McRae is an artist with her own singular power, as piano layers with guitar and McRae delivers a series of scathing indictments with grit and conviction: "You swore you'd raise our kids to end up just like you / well you're a false prophet / and that's a goddamn promise." Meanwhile "Let Me Be Wrong" is a bona fide anthem, a "buoyant ode to rejecting perfectionism." Built once again on a simple vocal and acoustic guitar, "Let Me Be Wrong" builds step over step in it's defiance; guitars layer, drums pick up the pace, and McRae makes space for everyone's mistakes. When McRae growls "fuck those girls got everything" it's a punch of both power and vulnerability, begging to be shouted in unison the biggest possible crowd. The unusual title of her second album is taken from a line in McRae's favorite film, Back to the Future. A key protagonist survives a hail of bullets, and the image resonated with McRae because, she said, she often feels a connection to some future self guiding her decisions, especially in times of crisis. It also inspired the album's cover, as McRae stands in a custom fireman's coat with the job's official marks and symbols stitched alongside abundant ones of her own. The effect caught her off-guard; "I was surprised how emotional it made me to be in the fire coat," she says, "forced to stand still, stand powerfully. I could feel myself becoming a symbol of my own hero's journey."
